             many of her late night wanderings have rendered fruitful in making new discoveries of hidden gems the city has to offer.  she is not unaware of the dangers,  but,  after all she has endured the unknown of the dark is far less menacing than the wolves in sheep clothes which walk in the daylight.  she can handle whatever terrors await.  and,  thus far,  she has mostly found wonders instead.  there is a beauty to the emptiness.  and if one is patient enough,  they will find others searching for glory amidst the desolate cityscape.  she finds it most exciting to get to show her companion to these little places worth seeking out. 

magnolia grins at the question and shakes her head.  it only takes a few more paces to reach the end of the block.  her hand lifts to point across the street to the desired building.  she swiftly ushers them both across and when they reach the sidewalk,  she directs her away from the main entrance to a smaller set of stairs leading down to a basement level entry.  unlacing her arm from her companion’s,  magnolia reaches for the door and pulls it open with a bit of a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.  it looks dismal at first,  she knows.  a simple hall that might look a little ominous at this hour,  but the door at the very end leads to the most wonderful little club she has ever discovered.  ❛  after you.  ❜

easy  for  the  world  to  turn  to  smoke.   where  villainy  fit  so  effortlessly  into  the  fabric  of  being,    destruction  waited  at  every  precipice  tipped  over  by  the  hands  of  fate.    but  when  the  skies  clear,    suddenly  melting  into  grains  of  obscurity,    she  feels  breathing  becomes  easier.    in  cherished  company,    in  the  amity  which  becomes    large    &    imposing    to  relax  the  way  her  shoulders  tense  in  time  to  her  clenched  jaw.    there  is  something  that  almost  brings  stillness  to  her;    something  in  magnolia  that  she  equates  with  a     gentle  calm,    like  the  lull  of  quiet  waves  being  swallowed  by  grains  of  sand.    repose  was  not  often  an  amenity  lithe  fingers  grasped,    but  it  could  be.    she  thinks.

she  lets  her  lead  the  way,    an  eager  accomplice  to  the  path  forged  beneath  their  gliding  feet    &    excited  smiles    only  slightly  dulled  around  the  edges  of  scarlet  stained  lips.    there  may  be  an  eeriness  accompanied  to  the  desolate  building,    an  emptiness  that  swells  equally  as  that  in  her  chest,   she  raises  a  questioning  brow  at  her  but  decides  not  to  question  it.    for  now,   at  least.   a  curious  smile  blooms  boldly  across  petals  as  she  tips  her  head  at  her  in  thank  you  for  holding  the  door  open,    therein  swiftly  stepping  into  the  door  but  not  taking  any  further  steps  until  she  feels  magnolia’s  presence  by  her  side  once  more.     ‟   mags,   you  do  realize  this  place  kind  of  looks  like  the  start  of  every  horror  movie  right?  ”

she  looks  like  she  may  exist  in  a  daydream.   there  is  something  other  worldly  about  thick  blonde  tresses,   swaying  with  a  dragging  sort  of  momentum     &    dimly  lit  smile  pressed  against  natural  rose.    carmen  smiles  at   @wtrss​,    an  easy  smile,    a  light  one  stolen  from  the  remnants  of  her  comfort.    it’s  tight  -  lipped,    an  intimation  of  distaste    for  the  slithering  smile  she’d  practically  fought  off  with  biting  prose    &    the  deadly  point  of  obscurely  dark  emerald  gaze.       ‟   no  need  to  thank  me  paige.   i  can  tell  when  someone  is  not  enjoying  the  company.    just  don’t  know  why  idiots  can’t  tell  when  someone  is  clearly  not  interested.  ”     she  clicks  her  tongue  against  her  teeth,    a  ringing  noise  that  slickens  rows  of  moonlit  pearls  with  venom  tainted  saliva.   she  presses  glass  to  her  lips    &    welcomes  the  familiar  burn  of  elixir,   peering  over  at  her  from  the  smooth  edge.      ‟  seriously   .  .  .    are  you  okay  though?    he  looked  like  a  real  creep.    i  can  totally  go  kick  his  ass  if  you  want  me  to.    i’m  not  above  resorting  to  violence.  ”

she  is  insatiable;    with  appetite  for  moondust    &   mischief.     it’s  a  hunger  which  exists  so  vividly  in  her  core,   tempting  the  curved  lines  of  her  mouth  to  press  for  more.    (  don’t  you  see  the  way  her  teeth  bear  beneath  the  weight  of  crimson  red?    don’t  you  see  it  in  the  scintillation  of  emeralds  held  in  the  shifting  eye  line?   she  is  made  up  of  shards  of  glass;    be  wary  of  getting  cut  on  the  broken  edges.  )    her  grin  lightens  the  lines  of  her  face,    amusement  finding  comfort  on  plush  lips  as  she  scoffs  so  boldly.      ‟   a  devil?   no  one’s  ever  called  me  that  before!  ”   there’s  something  hazardous  about  the  way  sarcastic  intonation  drips  so  effortlessly  from  parted  lips.     she,    holy  terror.

she  looks  up  at  him    &    with  effortless  lilt,   laughs.    he  always  had  a  way  of  pulling  laughter  from  her  chest;    the  kind  that  rumbled  deep    &    low  in  the  pits  of  her  stomach,   clenching  muscles  with  vigour.    easy  as  a  sunday  morning.     she  rolls  her  eyes,    free  hand  looping  over  their  clasp  to  poke  him  in  the  side.     ‟   hey!   watch  that  mouth  of  yours  beaumont!   i  might  just  have  to  kick  your  ass!  ”

eagerness  dances  across  the  lines  of  her  lips,   half  parted   &    stretched  beneath  the  moonlight.    they’re  quickly  approaching  destination    &    she  couldn’t  be  more  pleased,    evident  in  the  way  she  practically    sings    her  words.      ‟  of  course!   as  if  you  even  need  to  make  sure!  ”      &   when  they  stop  at  the  glass  doors  of  establishment,    she’s  quick  to  move  first,    pulling  the  door  with    theatricality    to  gesture  him  inward.      ‟  after  you,    my  good  sir.  ”

astute  professionalism  was  necessity  in  field  which  dealt  wild  cards  such  as  the  one  sitting  across  from  her.    there’s  a  certain  dampness  of  the  concrete  room  they  find  themselves  in,   privileged  lawyer  -  client  conversation  which  stills  the    curious  ears    burning  outside  the  door.    she  raises  a  brow  at  her,   a  remnant  of  amused  grin  shadowing  her  lips  that  twitch  in  the  otherwise  naturally  fallen  still  line.     ‟   court  appointed.  ”      she  confirms  as  she  sorts  through  the  folders  she’s  laid  out  on  the  table,   landing  on  the  notepad  and  pen  readily  available  to  her.      ‟   but  it’s  your  right  to  choose  your  own  counsel  should  you  wish  to.   would  you  like  me  to  contact  this   .  .  .    mr.  wayne  for  you?  ”      her  brows  pull  together  in  time  to  the  pursing  of  lips.      ‟   right    .  .  .    i  do  have  to  advise  you  that  if  you’re  going  to  say  anything  incriminating  to  me  right  now,   you  should  confirm  if  you  want  to  keep  me  as  your  lawyer  first.  ”

cheeks upturn into a grimace,   slight heat rising in his cheeks and he knows,    he knows that she doesn’t mean it as anything other than a genuine phrase,    truly does think there’s something endearing about his tendencies towards comics and sci - fi shows,    it’s just …     cute doesn’t exactly strike the image he’s wanting.    he’s there,   one of them,   and sometimes it doesn’t quite feel real,    feels like people will laugh when he speaks about inspiration and focuses in on whatever he’s stuck on,   and that’s not her.    it’s not on her that he feels that way,    just remnants of younger years when he was still trying to figure out who he should be,    when quietness was mistaken for shyness and it seemed silly that he would even get here.    so if he leans on his arms a little bit,    looks up at her with too big brown eyes that have widened almost appealingly and offers a slightly huffed out laugh,    who can really blame him for the expression? ❛   you know,   that’s what every guy dreams of being called…    cute,    like i’m your younger sibling who did something funny at a birthday party.    it’s just not the word i was hoping for here.  ❜  

intricacy  of  curiosity  etches  into  emerald  gaze,    drawn  brows  just  sheltering  the  way  eyes  twist  with  something  akin  to  analysis,   watching  the  way  his  expression  contorts  beneath  the  weight  of     unspoken  words.    pursed  lips  meet  the  silence  revered  whilst  words  are  collected;    her  brow  upticks  at  the  way  eyes  seek  hers.    drowning,    pulled  beneath  the  wave  of  sentiment,    the  way  familiar  hues  draw  her  in  only  to  pull  her  from  reverie  with  the  sort  of  laugh  that  finds  its’  path  from  his  parted  lips.    a    silken  smile   feels  familiar  on  her  own  tempted  lips.     ‟   you  know,    i’m  not  sure  why  guys  have  such  a  thing  about  being  called  cute.   it’s  not  a  bad  thing.   no  one  said  you  can’t  be  cute   &   hot  or  sexy  or  attractive,     or  whatever  other  word  you  want  to  use,    at  the  same  time.   ”     she  speaks  plainly,     with  utterance  of  gravity    &    authenticity  lacing  her  words.    she  matches  him  in  leaning  forward,   brows  both  raised  to  conjure  a   determined  assurance;     carmen  always  spoke  like  her  words  were    law.      ‟   who’s  to  say  i  don’t  think  you’re  all  of  those  things?   ”

this  is  her  recurring  dream.    the  shifting  autumn  air  is  no  match  for  the  fervent  heat  the  purity  of  his  smile  radiates.     &    it’s  miraculous  in  the  way  it  embeds  itself  into  her  veins,    like  every  breath  which  hollowed  her  lungs  was  heavy  with  the  weight  of  her  adoration.     &    she  wonders  if  he  can  see  it  in  the  way  her  lips  curl,    tenderness   of  the  shift  which  held  out  solely  for  him.   his  reaction  is  one  she  expects  but  it  doesn’t  fail  to  bring  a  wide  smile  to  her  lips,    lesser  lip  caught  in  between  the  movement  so  as  to  bite  back  her     lilting  laughter     but  to  no  avail  as  it  spills  freely  from  her  open  mouth  as  he  simpers  over  to  the  booth  with  the  dramatics  she’d  hoped  for.        ‟   you’re  such  a  goof.   ”       she  rolls  her  eyes  with  lack  of  annoyed  intent  but  with  disposition  of  doting  which  was    devoutly  faithful  to  him.     she  bends  down  to  press  a  kiss  to  his  jaw,   head  canting  to  gaze  at  the  wide  selection  of  prizes  whilst  keeping  mouth  just  hovering  by  his  ear.      ‟   what  if  i  want  to  be  greedy  and  ask  for  them  all?   would  you  indulge  me?  ”      

lack  of  intention  floods  her  voice,   acutely  aware  that  carrying  home  an  obscene  amount  of  stuffed  animals  would  be  their  first  obstacle  to    absurdity.    she  straightens  up  now,   shifting  away  from  him  for  a  mere  moment  to  settle  herself  on  the  stool  adjacent  to  his.   she  leans  on  her  elbows  in  anticipation  of  watching  him  closely,    gaze  never  leaving  the  way  in  which  muscles  flex  beneath  his  grip.    admiration  delineates  hues     &     suddenly,    she  thinks  this  little  display  is  enough  of  a  prize  to  her.    a  giddy  smile  stretches  her  lips,   pressing  into  flushed  rose  cheeks  as  she  gracefully  thanks  the  attendant  whilst  almost  buckling  beneath  the  weight  of  the  stuffed  animal.       ‟   holy  shit  this  thing  is  fucking  heavy.  ”      she  stutters  laughter  but  manages  to  settle  it  on  the  stool  to  shift  her  attention  to  him;    pressed  onto  tip  toes  to  graciously  grant  him  a  kiss.     ‟   i  knew  you  would  win,   handsome.   never  betted  against  you.    now,   would  you  like  to  collect  your  prize?  ”

the passage of time becomes a nebulous thing.     in her whiskey haze,   she cannot tell why or when the laughter and easy chatter dies in their throats and ebbs into a laden silence.     humidity clings to the canvases of their sun-kissed skin,   the san diego summer air sticky and stifling despite the lateness of the hour  –––   crackling with the kind of electric anticipation which tended to herald a thunderstorm.     one last sip of bittersweet booze burns on its way down her throat,   the emptied crystal glass still firm within her grip,   a fingertip tracing along the indented patterns.     with an almost feline dart of her tongue,   carol licks the syrupy traces of wild turkey from her lips and turns her attention to carmen beside her.     she drowns in the emerald ocean that is the other woman’s gaze,   hypnotized by the way in which the mirror-smooth surface reflects light.     a sea-farer at the mercy of a siren’s song,   she is;     a willing victim succumbing to the depths.

when carmen shifts closer,   eliminating the empty inches between them,   it is both expected and not.     she inhales sharply,   lips parted just so as she keeps the breath in her lungs,   dares not release it out of fear of breaking the trance.     here,   at last,   touch:     feather-light,   a whisper of fingertips,   kerosene poured unto the fire already burning within.     despite the heat,   a delicious shiver runs through her body,   raising gooseflesh in its path.     when carmen offers a drink from her lips,   carol greedily laps it up   –––   gulping down every last drop as though carmen were water and she had been parched for months.     the kiss ends too soon to quench her thirst.          ❝       who says i want you to stop ?       ❞          she hums huskily,   a ticklish vibration to her voice.     the glass sits in her hand still but she sets it down blindly while the free one finds carmen’s chin,   tilting it upward so she can steal another kiss,   open-mouthed and wanting,   before carol abandons her lips in favor of worshipping the jawline.          ❝       i’ve never been that great at restraint.       ❞

what  is  that  of  a  myth  of  a  starved  god?      how  does  desperation  bode  to  the  way  bones  shift  beneath  the  weight  of  stretching  muscle?    how  does  a  drink  from  forbidden  goblet  stain  lips  wine  red?    how  does  touch  elicit  both  a    shiver  of  a  chill    to  run  down  the  encompassing  expanse  of  spine     &     in  tandem,     set    flaring  flames    in  the  heat  of  her  heaving  chest?     (  you  sit  here  in  the  dark,    where  passing  external  luminescence  casts  flares  of  light  shadows  to  dress  shapes  you’d  like  to  trace  along  her  skin.    your  weighty  flesh  drowns  your  hollow  bones;    stay,   stay,    stay.    what  does  it  mean  to  capture  light  in  your  hands?  )      they’ve  danced  graciously  in  time  to  each  other’s  steps.   where  proximity  was  granted  under  guise  of     collegiality,    the  transformation  of  disposition  had  been  all  but  inevitable  when  she  fell  victim  to  the  curve  of  carol’s  smile;    something  she’s  certain  had  been  stolen  from  the    light  of  the  stars    paving  way  to  the  obscurity  of  night’s  sky.

she  is  a  woman  with  little  restriction.    deprivation  of  desire  was  not  intention  which  bode  familiarity  in  her.    there  is  something  damning  about  the  way  she  kisses  her;    drawing  desperate  breaths  from  melding  of  lips,     hungry    for  all  that  carol  would  be  willing  to  acquiesce.     lingering  remnants  of  a  devilish  grin  shifts  across  her  lips,    against  her’s,    temptation  found  its’  form  in  means  of  a  singular  red  apple.     &    now,    carmen  was  desperate  to  sink  her  teeth  into  its’  flesh,   for  sweet  nectar  to  spill  over  her  tongue     &    down  her  chin.    she  keeps  her  hand  steady  on  the  back  of  her  neck,    effectively  trapping  her  in  her  embrace     &    gaze  will  hammer  shut  for  few  mere  moments  as  she  draws  fervent  kisses  to  the  curve  of  her  jaw.    a  heavy  sigh  slips  past  open  mouth     &     she  thinks  she’d  happily  be  damned  to     eternal  hell     if  she  could  stay  like  this  with  her.       ‟   good.    me  neither.   ”     her  words  just  barely  escape  her  lips.     &     as  effortless  as  she  was  with     reckless  abandon,    she’d  hope  this  shift  in  their  affair  wouldn’t  force  harmful  consequence.      ‟     ──    this  is  probably  a  bad  idea,    you  know.    but  i’ve  never  been  the  voice  of  reason.  ”

promise   of   winter   clings   to   the   air,   biting   at   his   cheeks   &   fingers,   weathered   skin   an   insufficient   shield   against   cool   wind.   the   landscape   of   his   bones   as   bleak   as   the   stretching   tarmac   &   thickened   exhaust   fumes,   single   point   of   contrasting   heat   where   lungs   inflate   around   inhaled   ash.   these   streets   only   now   beginning   to   border   on   recognisable,   still   all   but   a   stranger   to   the   new   orleans   skyline.   (  yet   it   seems   a   little   more   like   home   with   her   at   his   side.  )   copper-spun   gaze   flickering   to   her   face,   catching   her   own   stare   for   a   stolen   moment.

compartmentalization  of  life  weathers  his  intonation    &    equally,    the  sternness  of  gaze.    but  she  swears  she  can  see  something  flicker  beneath  the  depths  of  dark  hues,    drawn  in  with  familiarity  tainted  by     deception  of  indifference.    where  youth  had  fled  from  bleeding  fingertips,    the  california  sun  housed  tender  smiles     &     there,    in  the  specks  of  ever  golden  sun,    she’d  captured  his  image.      ‟   you’ve  always  been  a  shit  liar,    you  know  that?    or  maybe  you  just  can’t  lie  to  me.  ”       despite  the  pointed  accusation,    her  lips  spread  into  a  teasing  grin,   alight  with  the    sentimentality    brooding  fire  in  her  chest;    stowed  away  to  find  their  roots  in  each  other  once  more.

he  mentions    someone  waiting  at  home  for  her     &    she  clicks  her  tongue  against  her  teeth,    head  canting  so  she  can  allow  her  gaze  to  rise  skyward  to  meet  the  sliver  of  sun  peeking  through  clouds  of  grey.      ‟   what?   is  this  supposed  to  be  a  date  or  something  then?   ”       oh,   how  she  continues  to  tease  despite  gaze  not  shifting  back  to  him,    the    wickedness   of  her  smile  is  enough  to  carry  intention.       ‟   maybe  ísa  just  sent  me  to  check  up  on  you  since  we  somehow  miraculously  found  our  way  to  each  other  again.  ”      &    now  she  will  forfeit  her  squinted  gaze  to  align  with  his.    do  they  dance  on  the  line  of  fate?    she  wonders.        ‟   why  is  it  weird  for  me  to  wonder  about  your  dating  life?    isn’t  that  what  friends  do?    ──     can  i  have  a  drag?  ”     she  cants  her  head  to  the  cigarette  sitting  idly  in  his  fingers.
