This is the last thing I’m going to say about Happiest Season.
I think that some of you need to take into consideration that the story that was told is relatable for a lot of people. For some, it’s difficult to come out. It’s difficult to deal with that kind of fear and when you are afraid you sometimes act irrationally. You sometimes act certain ways or say certain things that you don’t mean or that are out of character for you. You sometimes treat the people you love the most badly because of that fear. It’s not excusable and no one is saying that it is…but it makes sense. To err is human and so many are ready to form a lynch mob for a character in a movie because they didn’t get the “we’re queer and everything is rainbows and unicorns”.
But understand that such is not the reality for so many people. I’m not saying that the LGBTQ+ community doesn’t deserve those kinds of movies because we absolutely do. I would love to see more media of every day queer couples just going about their lives and not having to struggle because of their sexuality or gender identity…but you don’t get to tell people they’re wrong for relating to a character that may have told their story or a similar story. And tossing around buzz words like “abuse” and “toxic” when the story very clearly stated this was abnormal for the character…please just stop.
Did any of you who are hating this movie so much even bother to look up anything about this movie? Did you know that Clea DuVall wrote this movie as something of an autobiography? No? Well then…here have a link.
‘Happiest Season’ Director Made LGBT Holiday Rom-Com Because ‘I’ve Never Seen My Experience Represented’
Clea talks about the reason why she wrote this movie and how she has been both characters at different times in her life. This is a story based on her experiences and going on tangents about how it was bad queer rep is invalidating her experiences, in my opinion.
Just because it isn’t something you can relate to doesn’t mean you get to shame people who do. And for that matter…consider yourself lucky that you’ve never had to experience the trauma and fear of coming out to your family.
Also keep in mind that this is a movie with limited time to tell a story. You can’t fit every single thing into an hour and a half. No movie is perfect but you can still enjoy something in spite of it’s flaws.
Please stop saying that this movie was written for straight people when Clea was very clearly writing a story that reflected her past experiences just because you didn’t like it. You don’t have to like something and you also don’t have to pick it apart to find reasons. Literally no one is going to ask you for a 1000 word essay on why you do or don’t like it.
So in conclusion, I’m not defending Harper’s actions in the movie though I understand them. Abby chose to forgive Harper because she loves her and when you love someone and they make a mistake…that’s what you do. Forgiveness is divine.
