Apotheosis, how a mortal might endeavour toward its attainment.

Apotheosis, properly understood, is not actually an ascent. It is a transfiguration of being. It is the reconstitution of existence from a finite schema into a modality approaching the absolute. To speak of "reaching" apotheosis is a semantic compromise; one does not arrive but rather disintegrates in the precise manner necessary to cease being "one" at all. The coordinates of "place," "self," and "arrival" no longer retain coherence. I would argue that there is no "you" to arrive.

The earliest stage resembles what Christian mystics have called kenosis, an emptying of the egoic vessel to make habitation for the divine. Psychoanalytic tradition would label it as depersonalisation. Apotheosis requires that the self be exposed as a functional fiction, adaptive, yes, however, illusory. Only through its abdication may one behold what Heidegger named aletheia, the unconcealment of being. There is no longer a perceiver. It is not, as the devout may assume, a pious act. Apotheosis is often heretical. Blasphemy, paradox, & desecration are all methodologies. (Coincidentia oppositorum, Nicholas of Cusa.) Phenomenologically, it bears resemblance to psychosis. However, where psychosis is entropic, apotheosis is syn-tropic.

In Christian mysticism, theosis proceeds through participation, "becoming by grace what God is by nature." Ascetic purification (katharsis), contemplative illumination (theoria), & eventual union (theosis) form its tripartite sequence. In neoplatonic and hermetic streams, apotheosis entails the ascent of nous through successive spheres of intelligibility, each renunciation shedding another layer of multiplicity. In eastern orthodox hesychasm, one attains deification via hesychia, and the invocation of the name until the name dissolves the namer. In short, an inversion of creation.
