Hi guys!

After writing a review to ATYD I need to write something about my favorite fanfic with Remus pov: Shifting Lines. Please, go read and join the Discord!

Here we get a day-to-day school life. I am not kidding, it's written day by day mostly! Tobi, the author, it's the most amazing writer ever. He has every little detail planned! He knows all the side characters, which classes they have, the clothes, how the dorms and bedrooms are mapped. He has the story inside his head and writes ahead of time. It's amazing.

Now you can ask me how Remus is here. Well, we get to know him before Hogwarts while he lives with Hope and Lyall. Be prepared to be mad at them! They are manipulative and super scared of anyone finding out about Remus' lycanthropy. Remus doesn't have scars, he is a very scared of everything child/teen, he stutters, he can heal very fast and has super hearing, strength and vision. And he can't have friends.

Imagine going to Hogwarts, meeting Sirius, James and Peter and being friends with them! They are secret friends then. But it's Lily the first one. And Severus…

Oh, I need to fangirl those teens! Sirius is the most amazing tree! He is tall (and Remus is a small baby bean)! Sirius instantly is friends with James. But since we follow Remus' eyes… we don't get to see how great of a friend those boys are. They fight hard to make Remus a friend! 

Remember that Remus can't have friends? And Remus is the most anxious, nervous tern with scary intrusive thoughts and nightmares. Mixed with a Dumbledore ready to groom him in a war (I am seeing you there Albus! Don't get near Remus) and DaDa classes. This boy makes Sirius want to protect him!

Sirius, my favorite. He is hiding a lot, but ready to give all his needs and life to Remus. It's adorable. Since he is the oldest we get the most teenager problems from him! I laugh so much! He talks about penis, boobs, he sees the changes in girls and he flirts! Oh boy! He knows he is handsome. 

I have to say that Remus has a lot of problems understanding his feelings and sexuality. So, if you are uncomfortable about a teen talking about cis boys body, changes, reactions, please don't read. If you get nervous about reading panic attacks and sensory overload, please don't read! Here it's full. And it's so well written that it made me worried once that I was invading Remus' space while he was wishing to be alone. 

Ok, we get gay crises, straight teens problems, body changing and mental health written in a detailed and real way. If you need any warnings, Tobi can add a /cw for you. Just write to him. He understands. His story will have all representations.

We can't forget that James is the most energetic child ever. And like any boy at his age, he hates girls. He hates Lily! Their fights over anything are so funny! Lily needs to prove herself since she is a muggleborn and she has a life, she is funny, she has friends besides Severus and her friendship with Remus is so precious. They fight, they laugh, they study together. I feel all the time they are real teenagers living in a boarding school with magic.

Don't forget Peter! He is a great character here. He is sweet! He is shy, but has a big place in the group listening, helping and joining in every prank, banter and conversation. He adds a lot to the group. And he gets kisses!!

I love that everyone matures in a slow real way. Remus learns how to deal with people, their magic gets better, they start to have different conversations. Remus learns how to communicate, he is a sassy boy with The Marauders and a shy and nervous with his family, he gets more confident to have big conversations about his worries, to make jokes about himself being a werewolf, to accept himself, to see Sirius and notice his body reactions, he opens his eyes to Sirius' family problems! 

I know Tobi is working on a very big story. I know that people that don't read Harry Potter fanfics read his story. Why? Because Tobi knows what he is writing, there is a plan, he knows what will happen in all the years. Even his mom reads his fic! We all love and hate or just "are not sure" of his original characters like Aegis, David, the soon-to-be French boy, Quinn, Fawley, Dedenne, Spinnet, Magpie, Inkwood! Come to know them!

But I love to read and since the pandemic started I went back reading fanfics (last time I was reading lesbian fanfics about drag queens) and found out about Wolfstar. Now I have read more than 1.800 Wolfstar fanfics and I wanted to share my views, my reviews. Thinking about what story should be the first, why not the most famous for this new generation? Why not the one the Wolfstar fans consider canon?

I think ATYD was one of the first fanfics Remus pov I have read. I am a super Sirius Black fan, I have loved him since I was 13/14. Wolfstar is my comfort ship. Since everyone talks about this fanfiction for years, I gave it a try.

For the record, I adore angst, the suffering, the pain of my favorite characters. ATYD was like my limit. My heart is still broken, I can't reread. I read in 4 weeks! I was in pain! I was sad!

I can explain; Remus is an orphan who lives in a bad place. He is the most angered Remus that I have read in all the fanfictions. He has anger inside him and I don't like Remus here. But he is so well written, all his actions make sense, he needs therapy and all his suffering is so raw! He can be a mad guy, smoking and stealing, but later he is buying something for his friends.

Remus is so consumed by this anger, by the wolf, by the transformations… We only see his side of events, we only know what happens by his eyes where everything is not fair or colored by his fears, his bad moods. You can see children like him all over the world, he is real. He makes you want to care and support him (in reality we would run away from him because his actions always try to hurt people and we are not the Marauders).

Now remember it's a Wolfstar story. Sirius is scared and so lovable! We can see his lovely actions when he cares for Remus, talks to him, finds spells and ways to help him read and study! How can you hate this Sirius?

Well, if you think both boys don't have any adult figures to guide them on life, to teach them to share information, secrets or TALK about anything, about feelings, about pains! How can their beautiful relationship be secure, not toxic? It's toxic, because after all they have to fight, all their drama, fight fears, family and the big miscommunication… They love each other. So much love! Remus was so inside his mind dealing with the wolf, the pain, the anger inside him, the fear of the war that he mostly was blind to Sirius, who loved him, but Sirius was hiding his true self, he was living with the enemy! Remus wanted Sirius without any talk about feelings and wanting things, feelings that were never put on the table to be shared!

I have to say I cried every time the author wrote a foreshadowing. Talking about the future when you are reading it's my weakness, I get sad! There were times I had to stop reading because my heart was crying because I wanted them to be happy, safe and alive. This fanfiction was a big blow to my heart, to my feelings. I just wanted them to leave the Wizard World to be safe.

I can't spoil the story for you. You need to read. And love and hate every chapter. I also need to talk about Grant.

Grant is an original character loved by many. He is the troublemaker child who lived, loved and survived. Grant is another person who loves Remus, who gives everything and all his life to Remus. He is there for Remus, his relationship with Remus is sad and beautiful. He is there to help Remus understand himself, to pick all the pieces, to protect and let him go. Grant has a heart so full of love that makes me want to cry while writing this.

ATYD is a big story. All 7 years of school, all Dumbledore full manipulation on Remus, on Severus Snape, the war chapters with the werewolves is so scary! Remus is dealing with a lot of feelings of being human, being a werewolf, the chapter when he finds a parent figure, boxes never opened, anger and sadness chapters, Grant chapters where he is the most amazing person with his flaws, his fears, his feelings for Remus, for other people, his want to help! And the chapters with Harry!

It's a big adventure. You need to be prepared. People love this story. They love big, tall Remus, all badass. They love Grant. Oh, if you are worried about smut… There is no descriptive smut, just feelings. Imagine this fanfiction as a big rollercoaster when you think “oh, this chapter was nice and slow” to a chapter where you want to hide and cry over a sentence.

Well THIS is a great ask! It’s nice to see fans looking for authentic diversity in fics as opposed to tokenism. Just about all of these fics have been listed on various library lists, but hopefully people enjoying seeing them listed somewhere convenient. Also, this is just a VERY SMALL selection of fics featuring Remus or Sirius as POC, so if you’re looking for more of a certain representation, just send an ask!

Also, a note to authors looking to include representation (other than their own ethnicity) in their next fic: make sure that you read first hand experiences from multiple sources, research with advocacy groups, and THEN try reach out to a peer who can potentially beta/do a sensitivity read for you. It's important that we all try and learn as much as possible on our own before asking our peers to work as our educators. ❤️

So we have a lot of ‘Sirius is beautiful and my word does he know it, his hair is his favourite thing and he revels in the glory of his own splendour’.

But I’m just laughing at the idea of a completely oblivious Sirius who is too busy being hyperactive to ever pay any real attention to what he looks like in the mirror- I mean the boy brushes his teeth sat on the counter chatting rapid fire to the others (much to ‘Fuck Mornings, Fuck You, Fuck Everything’ Remus’s ire), or bouncing around the dorm flinging stuff in his bag. He doesn’t ever really brush his hair- there’s a charm to do that, and then he doesn’t actually have to watch what he’s doing because who has time to actually look at their hair? And it all gets in his fucking face anyway- he keeps it long partially because his mother claims it looks unruly and partially because he just can’t be fucked getting it cut, but one evening in the common room he’s tucking it behind his ears to do his Transfiguration for the 7th time in quarter of an hour and angrily says he’s just going to chop it all off, and there are literally about 15 people around the room (including Remus) who just go ‘NO!’ and then look really awkward but he can not cut it- just that casual elegant way it falls into his eyes and it’s all wavy and silky and so so so pretty, and Lily comes to the aid of Remus like ‘Well Muggle mythology says there was this lion called Sampson, and when they cut off his mane he lost his power. So you shouldn’t cut it off- it’s unlucky. Here, have a hairband.’ and he thinks it’s very odd behaviour but like Ok, fine, people are weird.

And he knows he’s charming because he charms people all the time, and he’s a massive flirt but that’s just because he likes people and it makes him happy to talk to people in a way that makes them feel good about themselves, and it makes him happy to see the smiles and bitten lips and slight flushes that say they’re flattered because it’s nice to make people feel good (except Snape, obviously), and if it means he can worm his way out of detention or get drinks for him and the lads at The Three Broomsticks then so much the better, but he just does not understand why not everyone finds it as easy as he does? Like he tells Peter to get the next round in, tells him what to say to Rosie to get her to forget they’re 16, and Pete comes back really dejected like ‘I said what you told me and it didn’t work’. And Sirius is really confused by this like ‘What, but you said the exact same thing I just said?’

And really why do girls giggle so much? Do they do that all the time? Why? At least Evans is normal, but some of the others actually freak him out a bit, and truth be told sometimes the blokes are no better. And it becomes a massive inside thing, especially amongst the Gryffindors, like ‘Someone should tell him he’s a fucking adonis.’ ‘What? No way! His ego’s just fine as is- don’t inflate it any more.’ ‘But he’s so pretty it’s just wrong for him not to realise.’ ‘No! And it’s just something that’s never really occurred to him- to be bothered about what he looks like. Maybe it’s so many years of an abusive home being looked at like he’s dirt, but he’s got a remarkable resistance and ignorance towards the way people look at him, good or bad. And it’s only really Remus who breaks past that. Because he’s got such eerily perceptive eyes, it’s just like he’s looking right into your soul, and it’s sort of uncomfortable and it makes his skin go all crawly but he loves it- it’s a sort of adrenaline rush to feel so totally exposed, and he feels like Remus likes what he sees when he looks at him like that. He feels valued and important and special, like the way it makes him smile to make other people feel, only so much more intense, and when, eventually, Remus is brushing that bloody fucking hair out of his eyes and down his cheek and says he’s beautiful, he feels like maybe he is. And it’s got absolutely nothing to do with the way he looks in the mirror.
