Do Cyrus' and TJ's characters ever interact 🤔

I was just wondering why you think the swing set scene makes it clear that TJ is gay? I mean nothing really happened but a bond and instant connection that could be platonic not romantic.

There’s nothing platonic about the swingset scene anon. There’s the obvious symbolism of two teenage boys swinging (the same way). There’s the fact that Cyrus just broke up with his beard in the previous ep and is alone and sad before being approached by a green eyed, confident sports team captain (he has a type).

TJ ‘s lean on the swingset when he starts talking to Cyrus is the same lean you can see any male love interest do when they talk to a woman and he even asks Cyrus, ‘’do you hang out here a lot?’ (come here often?). This is also the first scene in which TJ is actually a likable character, instead of being a bully he’s actually nice to Cyrus and opens up to him, and this is the first time we see TJ genuinely smiling. And all the looks and smiles they share during the scene, and of course Cyrus’ ‘’you know where to find me, and so do you’’ and TJ’s smirk in response is the show telling us to keep an eye on these two. Indeed, the whole swingset scene is the show telling us that TJ will be an important part of Cyrus’ story.

And it shouldn’t be ignored that the swingset scene wasn’t featured in any of the promos for both Miniature Gulf and Mackuary as a whole. If the mack chat hadn’t been released early it would have come as a complete surprise. The promos gave the impression that it would be focusing on TJ and Buffy and Cyrus and Jonah. Why did the show want this scene to come as a complete surprise?

And why did the mackchat discussion of this scene feature magnets in the background? And why did the generally hetero-normative mackchat even talk about it? And why did the texts from the mobile app have Cyrus straight up use the word subtext to describe what was going on? There was lots of romantic subtext that’s sure.

The tropes Terri is working with here are super common: bad boy/good boy, nerd/jock, broody jerk/ray of sunshine, tall/small, blond/brunette. If Cyrus had been a girl I don’t think anyone would be denying what was happening during the swingset scene. And if it had been Jonah pushing Cyrus on the swings no one would be pretending it was platonic either.

you know what, we didn’t NEED a ton of textual confirmation about tj and cyrus because the moment just…. being the handhold says a LOT. cyrus is the kind to talk a LOT, especially when he’s nervous and unsure of himself. he’s been shown to be nervous and unsure about boys and his sexuality at times. but this??? no long rants, no big talks. he just goes in and holds tj’s hand and smiles and looks so HAPPY. and tj is finally confident to show his ROMANTIC affection for cyrus and CONFIRM it and dropped kira. they were both open and honest with each other.
