Hello and welcome to this new blog! I'm Luciel, also known as Twisted Serval on other accs!
This account will be mainly for me to yap about books?? And my fav characters and blorbo thoughts! So if you want to yap about books always feel free to dm me!!
Currently having a big brainrot on the Dark Rise / Dark Heir books,,
Also should I read Captive prince?? I really want to!!
I know we always talk about the headcannon of James being trans, but I fear we have skipped over the idea of Will being trans (maybe even both of them being trans).
This rant gets kinda long and has heavy spoilers. So. Prepare.
Hear me out. Both of them have the symbolism of their parents refusing to believe Wil and James are their sons. Both of them have the symbolism of being reborn and not wanting to be referred to who they were. (Plus, transmasc Sarcean. Absolute gender goals)
Also for the added angst of the flashback in chapter 32 of Will's mother. "I shouldn't have raised you. I should have killed you." "You're not my son. You're not the child I had to give up." The angst potential goes up so much higher if we make Will trans.
Along with the idea of Eleanor thinking at first that maybe because the child is a girl Will is not the dark king reborn. Eleanor panicking whenever Will breaks some kind of gender norm. Eleanor being so deep in denial about Will being the dark king that every sign of masculinity is confirmation of the worst.
Tiny Will being clueless as to why his mother is so furious at him for cutting his long hair. Will wearing dresses and growing his hair out, with the hope of maybe if he could be a good daughter his mother would finally love him.
Will lying to himself after his mother died, that cutting his hair and 'pretending' to be a boy is all so he can get revenge for his mothers death.
Will maybe taking longer to put together that he's the dark king reborn. Will brushing off his mothers words to him as her disapproval of him being trans.
Will having overwhelming guilt thinking he's deceiving everyone by 'pretending' to be a boy. But still keeping it a secret because of his fear of everyone hating him.
Will bring drawn to and feeling a bond with Violet because her blatant disregard of gender roles. Will having gender envy of Cyprian's and the stewards androgyny.
Will thinking not only will James hate him for being the dark king, that James wouldn't want him anyways because he's afab. Will binding for long periods of time in dark heir when their sharing a room. Will panicking when James unties his shirt to see the medallion in dark rise. Will dealing with dysphoria while also dealing with his attraction to James.
Arrrrruughhhhhh just trans Will.
Then. Then just imagine both Will and James being trans.
Just. The whole scene in the hall, of Will figuring out James is the high janissary's son. Just, "that thing is not my son."
...Just the realization Will has already with both of them being reborns but add them also being trans. Just add to the sympathy Will already feels for James and him relating and make it worse.
"Will took a step foward. 'You're not going to stab your own son.' He was standing between them. 'It's not right.'" But add an emphasis on the "son".
during my first read of the dark rise series I totally overlooked the words engraved on ekthalion, bc they seem like your standard prophecy surrounding a sword in fantasy
he who wields the blade will become the champion
however, you could also reinterpret them to mean the person who wields the blade will become (be possessed by) the champion (visander, who is repeatedly called the queen/the lady's champion)
which i think was pretty cool foreshadowing, but also perhaps a hint at what ekthalion's either original purpose or later re-purpose might have been
