Jean a debutante?

Jean says she went to a debutante ball. To me those events are associated with certain very selective social institutions, usually for the rich. Would it be different for that time and place?

I wondered the same thing, but @aussiegirl41 says it’s a common thing for girls to do as a school activity, which is not at all what it is in the US.  I’m wondering if it’s a bit like Homecoming Dance in the US?  A queen and court? 

But I do agree that it’s not something I’d see a girl doing who’s going to be bent over hoeing rows of lettuce in a couple years.   :-(

It is a nice little detail to see that she was a skilled seamstress so young.

I’m not really surprised, when I read that there was going to be a telemovie to tie everything up.  It is what it is.  Like @crinklybrownleaves, I have my happy-angsty little headcanon.

Might be that the creators, thinking that ABC would green-light a S6 (given the TDBM is their #1 rated program), decided to use the problem of a divorce to draw a little more angst out of the relationship.  If that is the basis of S5, I have mixed feelings about it.  Won’t stop me from watching every single minute of it, but I may find myself wishing they had gone in a different direction.

Obviously when they show S5 I will watch every minute and probably go slightly crazy (ok, a lot crazy), but at the moment I seem to be in a ‘don’t really care too much what happens in S5’ frame of mind.

I think it’s because we know that whatever happens in S5 isn’t supposed to be an ending. So it’ll be 8 mysteries to solve, a few episodes of Munro, Blake having run ins with everyone in Ballarat, hopefully some intimate glances exchanged, and something vaguely cliffhangerish at the end. If we get some snarky banter I’ll be happy.

And then we’ll get a telemovie that feels completely different to all the preceding episodes, that attempts to explain too much in an hour and a half or two hours, and a vague feeling of ‘is that it?’

So I suspect we’ll be relying on imagination and fanfiction to get a satisfactory ending, and who knows where they’ll take the story if another network picks it up.

Sorry if that all sounds a bit depressing. I’ll still enjoy S5 I’m sure, but it’s a bit spoilt already by not being that organic ending the show deserves.

I am trying to figure out what it is that is making me so upset about the end of Dr. Blake other than the obvious. I think part of it is the way that things are playing out. As serval other people pointed out five seasons is nothing to sneeze at, especially when you’ve got five strong seasons like we’ve had. But I feel like if they had announced that season five was going to be the end before filming and we knew they were writing a last season, there would be an organic ending not to mention a chance to psychologically to say goodbye. Needless to say this probably wasn’t a show runner decision. Whispers here were that they had every expectation of a season six and maybe more. But now we have a season five written probably with an open ending, and the Telemovie at the end that is supposed to tie up five years of stories. And on top of that since they drop this bomb on us there’s been a complete media blackout. Nothing from the show, nothing from ABC, nothing from the actors. Not even a mention in the real Ballarat Courier. That may be in part because many of them were as surprised as we are, and of course a lot of people are simply not permitted to speak publicly on the matter. I’m certainly not allowed to speak publicly on policy decisions my company makes. But it is hard to make peace with something that ends so abruptly, and so irrationally. There’s a nagging in my brain that wonders if we’ll see season five at all. It wouldn’t be the first time a completed season was not aired. And of course the irrationality of this decision, that a show with the top ratings is being removed just hurts my brain.

i hadn't thought about it not being released at all on TV if they don't it will be released strait to DVD so the actors still get some commisions.
