it was so so so so bad, okay? I'm not going to argue that for a moment, it was a terrible call and it was a terrible time to MAKE that call considering everything that happened in wrestling this past week.
BUT: I have theories as to where they are going with Seth Rollins in the aftermath of that and it's not a bad thing.
So, in order to beat Strowman last month, Seth had to break out the pedigree. I thought it was weird then, because of course that move is associated with Triple H and, for Seth, with his corporate heel run. I pointed it out the night it happened to a few people who told me I was reading too much into it because WWE wouldn’t be smart enough to do a cue like that for a character change.
But after last night’s Hell in a Cell, I stand by my thoughts that there was more to Seth using the pedigree than just “I’m desperate and breaking out my full arsenal.” Because of course the weapon that got Seth in trouble was a fucking SLEDGEHAMMER. And it wasn’t just Seth USING the sledgehammer, it was Seth’s pause before he did so, it was the pained look on his face as he realized what he was doing. It wasn’t just about him going too far physically to beat The Fiend, it was specifically him being willing to use Triple H’s signature weapon to do so.
Seth’s whole face turn was based around his insistence that he’s NOT Triple H, he’s not like him, he’s not going to turn out like him. That whatever Triple H saw in him that resonated with the Cerebral Assassin was just part of H’s imagination. Seth wasn’t like that and he tried to prove it by reuniting with The Shield, with doing good, with being a man of the people.
The ref even yelled at Seth “Is this really who you WANT to be?” before Seth raised the hammer and hit The Fiend.
Seth can’t escape that deep down he IS like H. That he isn’t the man of the people, that he is only the Kingslayer because HE WANTS TO BE THE KING. Seth is having to face a truth about himself he’s run from, that he’s exactly what he’s spent the past few years pretending he isn’t and he never was.
Beyond that, look at what Bray Wyatt’s promos in the Funhouse have been about when he talks about Seth. He’s talked about how he can forgive, but The Fiend can’t. He’s brought up so much of Seth’s character history, including reminding Seth of what he did when he was part of the Authority.
Bray and The Fiend know what Seth is inside, that he can’t hide from himself forever. Not that they think that’s a bad thing, not that this makes The Fiend a face (despite the part where The Fiend is a feminist ally after taking out Jerry Lawler). Bray and The Fiend just find the whole thing amusing, find it funny that the crowds have forgiven Seth for all that he did.
I have no real faith WWE will follow up on all of this, and it shouldn’t have come at the cost of The Fiend’s push. And ending a Hell in a Cell match like that was so fucking stupid. If you were going to do that shit, you might as well have let Charlotte and Bayley have the other Cell match at the show and just had Braun and Seth do Last Man Standing or something like that.
But if I’m reading all of this right, Seth’s not far from giving in to his old bad habits and I, for one, am here for the return of shit-heel Seth Rollins and his suits.

Sort of a bigger collective energy to tap into here. IDK. I’m reading too much into it. Phonogram is over. I weep.)
When you finish a book/series do you try not to look back on it? Or do you ever catch yourself thinking about what would have happened to certain characters in following years? Not so much "kill your darlings" as "become estranged from them and they never call unless they need money or a place to crash for the night?"
I’ve definitely reached the stage of my comic career that I can be presented with a comic and go “Hah! I haven’t thought about that in years!”
I suspect people would be surprised how little you think of stuff that’s already wrapped, but it’s fairly logical if you pick apart what my actual job is. I’ve been thinking about how I run at the moment - I’m writing STAR WARS, SPANGLY NEW THING, WICDIV, LUDOCRATS, UBER and MODDED. That’s six universes I’m keeping alive at any given time. It doesn’t leave a huge amount of room to play with the past.
I suspect this story may be best to ask me in a few years time, when longer term projects end. My career has basically only ever had mid-length runs. I’ve never done something that’s lived with me for more than two or so years. JIM, Iron Man, Uncanny X-men, Darth Vader all were 30-32 issues, all double-shipping (Including specials and books in other series, etc). That’s a short sharp intense burst of narrative, and different from how Uber and WicDiv have been. Will I musing over the WicDiv missing pantheon story of the Burma campaign or something down the line? God knows. We’ll find out.
