Goffman 1964, American Anthropologist
The Neglected Situation
By: Erving Goffman
Published by: American Anthropologist New Series, Volume 66, Number 6 Part 2: The Ethnography of Communication December Pages 133-136
LL Abstract:
In this article, Goffman describes how studies of social correlates of speech have neglected the physical and social settings or situation of speech, instead treating this setting as the result of two speakers with social attitudes making talk. The article proceeds to define the concepts of gathering and encounters in order to illuminate how participants in the act of speaking are socially organized. Goffman concludes that in order to truly understand how face to face interaction functions, all extra-linguistic and linguistic factors must be considered.
LL Summary:
The article begins by discussing how more social variables are being correlated with linguistic factors, and how at the same time new properties and indicators are being discovered in speech. Goffman argues that the social situation of physical setting and social occasion has been neglected in analysis and calls for further study of speech in social organization. In the next section, Goffman defines social situations as environments of āmutual monitoring possibilitiesā, where individuals are accessible to others and others are accessible to them. People who are in each othersā immediate presence like this are in a āgatheringā, according to Goffman. Participants in a gathering are governed by cultural rules of behavior, and these rules organize the social behavior for how individuals conduct themselves. Goffman further defines an āencounterā or face engagement as when two or more people in a gathering jointly co-sustain a single and moving focus of visual and cognitive attention. These encounters entail a physical coming together in body language and have clear rules for how participants begin, terminate and participate in an interplay of acts of some kind. Goffman suggests that talk is sustained through turns at talking by co-participants, and that it is socially organized by a system of ritually governed face-to-face action. Cues in the state of talk inform speakers about who is taking the floor and about the stability of the focus of attention they receive. Goffman concludes that utterances do the job of keeping participants busy in talk, but require a functional overlay of gestures to systematically prop up or police states of talk. Participants work in ācollaborationā to keep turns in progress while showing other people not involved in the encounter respect for their accessibility to the conversation. Finally, Goffman suggests that face-to-face interaction is expressed through a linguistic medium, but has other processes and structure that are extra-linguistic in nature.
LL Recipe Comparison:
This article is most like One Pot Zucchini Mushroom Pasta:
Just as this recipe is a crowd-pleaser, Goffmanās description of social situations as gatherings marked by encounters is guaranteed to pique the interest of students of sociolinguists. The veggies and light amount of cream in this dish result in a flavorful and zesty combination, much as Goffmanās descriptions of opportunistic approaches to social situations as not being āyour country cousinā gives this article a particular zest as well. Good eating!

So you know when you're writing a scene where the hero is carrying an injured person and you realize you've never been in this situation and have no idea how accurate the method of transportation actually is?
Oh boy, do I have a valuable resource for you!
Here is a PDF of the best ways to carry people depending on the situation and how conscious the injured person needs to be for the carrying position.
Literally a life saver.
(No pun intended.)

a little about this au: while preparing for the restaurant's opening, Sanji often stopped by the supermarket and fell head over heels in love with Zoro. Zoro suddenly fell for him too... now they're in their rose and candy stage and often spend the night at each other's places! Sanji hates Zoro's sofa because he's used to a good orthopedic mattress lol
also, i was once asked what Sanji would have as a pet, and i answered that he would have fish! so here they are! he loves them very much and thinks that they are all beautiful ladies.
I SPELL THE WORD "BEAUTIFUL" INCORRECTLY, SORRY, I REALLY WANTED TO SLEEP.
