A sort of redraw of Saya from the excellent webcomic Ironheart rune. I ended up making her seem way angrier in this than she was. Also can't draw a food container very well. Still, I think I learned some things trying to do the style

Who here remembers that #drawthisinyourstyle that was popular TWO YEARS AGO. Yeah, I have procrastination issues. I have kept a tab open waiting to get around to it, and it became one of those snowball things that just made the problem worse.

Right so fuck that, today I check a really old task off a list. This super rad lady is Naomi, a cyborg from the excellent artist @causeimdanjones​ And let me just say I dig this character design on so many levels. She is legit one of my top ten fictional lady designs. Which is why I wanted to do this.

It turned out.... fine? Like yeah I can see flaws with it but nothing overly glaring at least to my amateur art understandings. I put her in a cocktail dress and drew a martini mainly because I like tiny plastic swords.

Somewhat loosely related to the mages flying question, can water magic be used for water cavitation and or jet propulsion to swim real fast? Failing that, like with the glider can they at least use a board and surf real good? Hopefully because the idea of surfing wizards is very entertaining to me.

Water magic can absolutely let the mage swim really fast in any number of ways. They could also theoretically surf real good.

This as an attempt to challenge myself not to erase things while using reference. So the proportions arent what they should be and I had to do some planning to get things in order so to speak. But I think I learned some things with it. I still dont get clothing wrinkles. Like I copied the ones in the picture, and they look ok but its a bit of a stumbling block. Chrono trigger is one of the best rpgs ever made and it has some great characters in it.

Ok, so I will discuss the art first and then proceed to.... opinions. More Sleepless Domain fanart, this time of the best character to ever grace the comic, Sally Fintan. Her dress is more complicated than Cassidys, and also seems different depending on which part in the strip its obtained from, so I just did my best there. I think I got her impressive eyebrows pretty well, her sharp teeth a bit less so but hey everyone starts somewhere. As an aside I do love that sharp teeth trope, and shes the only one so far in the comic who had them. In retrospect I don’t really like her left hand fist but did a finger gun to homage the power beams that some of her other team members pull off.

Now, before I get into these “hot” takes because haha fire pun, I will lay down a series of points I get are true but I still feel the argument stands. 

One, Cube is obviously a great storyteller and in no way am I saying I know better or things should be changed.

Two, Ultimately this is a story concerning teens and people who are not yet at full emotional/intellectual maturity. Even adults fuck up all the time but expecting perfect decision making from characters in this age bracket isn’t a defendable position. 

Three, Spoilers but Sally is dead making her at this point a static entity.Its easy for me to say she is the perfect angry fire gremlin because at this point she isnt going to have any character development that might make me change that opinion where as there are others that as the readers learn more, have more points of which to judge.

Now to get down to it. I re read the first couple of chapters to get some reference pictures, and something struck me. Sally was goddamn correct, Tessa is a disaster as a leader and should have never been. On face value the original team falls into five man band tropes pretty easily. Tessa is the leader, Sally lancer, Undine is the heart, Gwen the strong guy and Sylvia the Smart guy. Despite her power and willingness to bark orders though Tessa doesn’t really lead in any meaningful way. 

Its interesting that in a team rife with team attacks both shown and implied, Tessa is not a part of any of them. When challenged on her superiority complex there is no denial just a fine do it on your own then. Sally wanted equality in the group and Tessa leaves them to their fate rather than address any of her own issues. Obviously it was the interference of The Purple One that did the actual killing, but the negligence is what allowed the scenario to happen in the first place.

Going into speculation zone a bit farther. Sally is overconfident and emotional yes, but I think part of it stems from the fact she didn’t see herself in equal footing to the others. Like they could pseudo fly (or just fly). to me it comes across as she kind of wanted to just fit in. Shes got a rivalry thing going on with Sylvia, she and Gwen seemed to get along though Gwen seems to have the emotional availability of a rock, and Undine seemed to be one of the few to get her but in early Undine fashion was just too passive about it.

A good leader, hell a good friend would maybe able to lend a compassionate ear to some of these grievances, but as gets demonstrated repeatedly later in the comic, Tessa is good at cutting and running.Why be wrong when you can be gone?

I swear this seemed longer when I started it, but I dunno I kind of lost steam. Anyway Sally was correct, I hold out slim hope for some sort of miracle like I dunno pheonix fire resurrection or some such, she and the rest of team alchemical deserved better. Tessa can go sulk to pieces in a hole, Sleepless Domain is a really great webcomic and thats about it for now.

So I had the song “Sera Was Never” stuck in my head the last couple of days so I banged this together in an effort to clear it. The proportions bug me a bit, and man does she have an oddly complicated outfit. Its nearing magical girl levels of details. But shes probably the best thing to come out of that game, even if sometimes she gets a dose of the old multiple writer syndrome.

I hope she comes across as appropriately smug, and armed with bees.Turns out drawing many bees in a small place is also tricky.

Hats? Not my favorite thing to draw. Lips are challenging as well though I think they turned out ok. The hat flowers I completely winged it and I actually like the way they turned out.

Shadow Sae is one of those character designs that made me.... feel things. A classy dress goth with danger energy? Is it hot in here or is it just me.

So Swords is an excellent little webcomic. It has an absolutely gigantic cast of characters so I decided to do Sabre, a spunky little fighter who wields some kind of monster sword and unfortunately gets knocked out of the swordament early.

While doing this I noticed a few things. One this turned out pretty well, I mean I was emulating but the style of the comic I think was developed and honed in order to both look good and also be able to come out efficiently. Like I didnt have to erase anywhere near as much as regular. So well done for Matthew J Wills. Of course this is all speculation and maybe its something entirely different. I was impressed with the hands though for emulating. That and the hat. Hats are difficult.

Its been a bit but here we go again. So electricity effects still arent where I want them. Attempted to do a hip cocked pose, it turned out.... eh? Kind of? The hand graspy thing is also better than I expected but not meeting what I want yet. This piece isnt really where I want it but thats the whole point of practice I guess.

Emilie was a fun character from Crosscode, and where she mixes in french to her dialogue a taunt of “Im holding lightning” I thought would be fitting and in character. If I got my french right, Im kinda rusty on it. Also I just like characters that use lightning what can I say? Once I unlocked that I used it as my default for much of the game.

Another attempt at more a more realistic drawing, this time of all around great human Adam Savidan. Doing an angle from a selfie was a little challenging but I think it turned out half ok. I ended up half assing the Dauntless logo because while great game so many fiddly little bits and it was late so I called it a night. Speaking of I found out about the game from Adam so thats fun.

Tried to branch out by doing an animal. Owls are cool birds but very challenging to draw. Lots of detail to do. It didnt really turn out good, but it does resemble an owl so eh, its practice

So magical girl outfits are very detailed. This is very surprising /s

I mixed a character from Sleepless Domain an excellent webcomic, and because she uses scissors I did her in one of the Kill la Kill poses. While yeah not terribly original a thought Im sure it was more practice of using multiple references together. Good old angry girl Cassidy.

Something in a bit different of a style. Otus of owlboy. Has some impressive side burns and tries very hard.

The cartoony proportions was a bit strange but not too bad, and hey big armored gloves help make hands easier so thats always nice.

Next in the lessons of learning. Taking reference images in composite to make something new. To the best of my knowledge there isnt a pose of Katt like this so, hurrah for that?

Feet remain difficult, hands as well. But its a learning thing. Breath of Fire 2 is one of the classic rpgs out there thats one of my favorite. Also Katt was one of my favorite characters of the game. Though its a very good cast all around.

So this is my first attempt drawing again in a few years. It’s not where I want it to be but can’t fight with it forever. Also I don’t have a better way to get things other than my phone. Ah well

This character already has me invested and they’re barely in it so far. I saw she had both lightning powers and a cool scar we haven’t gotten to see in great detail yet and was like hey maybe I should do them like lichtenberg figures then found out there was a discord with tons of juicy world building. So what I thought was clever is very likely just catching up with the class. 

On an unrelated note I think that masked man who keeps carving giant zs into things might be that Zorro fellow.

I don’t know if she can make lightning javelins but I also don’t know that she can’t and it was a kind of fun idea

In all seriousness it’s a great comic built atop some seriously detailed lore crumbs. I could learn about this place all day.

Real life study here. Friend of mine I used to live with. She moved, and thus we moved apart. No hard feelings or anything I wish her well. I am at least fairly sure she thinks of me positively as well.

She was/still is many amazing things. Hard working artist, classy, funny and more. At one point in the friendship I had developed a huge crush on her, it was one sided and because I was a goddamn adult I got over my own shit and never burdened her with any of it.It will always bug me people who lack the self awareness and empathy to do that. Ugh anyway this was not an attempt to start ranting about aspects of my life an encounter with a swing set during an evening stroll just brought a bunch of nostalgia bubbling up.
