You sat in your bedroom, clothes scattered all around your bed and floor with a full face of makeup. It was already seven thirty pm and you still had no idea what to wear. You knew you wanted something classic, yet none of your clothes seemed to look right.
You tried on a black mini dress. At first, it seemed like a great option. You had paired it with black heels, but when you looked in the mirror, it all felt too plain. Then, a dark purple dress. It looked over the top. Too much for a simple dinner. You even tried on those jeans you knew Hollis liked, and paired them with a corset top. None of it seemed to fit right. Eventually, you settled on a black skirt and a matching black top. Not too casual, not too over the top.
You told yourself it was just dinner, nothing to be nervous about. Still, you couldnβt stop the nerves from settling in your stomach.
Your hands shake slightly as you adjust the hem of your skirt one final time. You were finally seeing him after weeks of silence, weeks spent convincing yourself that the last night you shared was finally the end. After weeks of growing closer to the one person Hollis explicitly didn't want you to.
Now he was coming back. One part of you hoped he was coming back for good. The other told you this was the exact cycle you had stopped yourself from repeating.
The ring on your phone pulls you out of your thoughts. It was Hollis, texting to let you know he was outside. You quickly grab your purse and keys, checking yourself in the mirror for one last time before you hurry out of your apartment.
Once you're outside, you see his black Mercedes waiting for you. It all takes you back to when you first started seeing him over a year ago. Somehow, you still feel the same way you did when he asked you on your first date. Nervous, giddy, nauseous and excited all at once.
He slides out of the car with ease, a bouquet of pink tulips in his hand. He smiles before walking over to the passenger side, holding the door open for you.
"Hi, doll. You look gorgeous." Hollis says, handing you the bouquet. "These are for you. Your favorite."
You smile and take the flowers from his hand. "Thank you, Holli."
He lets you climb into the passenger seat before he walks back to the driver's seat. Inside, the car smells like him. Like his woody cologne he always wears. You smile at the familiar scent.
The drive to the restaurant was peaceful. His hand rested on your thigh like it always did when you two drove anywhere. Without much thinking, you placed yours over it, letting your fingers slip between his. It was scary how fast everything went back to normal.
The restaurant was quiet when you arrived. The inside was dimly lit with only a few other tables occupied.
Hollis had chosen one of the places the two of you used to visit all the time. It instantly brought you back to the past. To the times when all of it was simple. To the times when you still fully believed Hollis was your endgame.
Dinner passed more easily than you imagined it. At first the conversation stayed casual. He asked you about work and you asked him about his music. He told you some recent stories about Nate and Roman and you laughed along, pretending like hearing Roman's name didn't bother you in the slightest. Hollis didn't seem to notice the way you flinched when he mentioned him.
By the time both of your plates were empty, all your nervousness seemed to fade into familiarity. His hand found yours across the table, his thumb brushing over your knuckles as though the last few weeks never happened. As though there wasn't silence waiting to be addressed.
"You ready to go?" He asks, his voice soft and firm. You only nod.
You know the conversation is bound to happen soon, but neither of you bring it up just yet. Not until you reach his place.
The door to Hollis's apartment clicked shut behind you and suddenly, all the nerves came running straight back to you. The ease you found during dinner was nowhere to be seen.
His apartment still looked exactly the same as it did that night, only slightly tidier. He seemed to plan everything out perfectly.
It should have felt comforting. Instead, it all made your stomach tighten. It made you feel nauseous.
Hollis placed his keys on the counter and turned towards you. "Do you want something to drink, baby?"
The nickname made you cringe internally. You haven't heard him say it for a while. You forgot how much influence he held over you.
You shake your head no and moved to the living room, leaving your heels by the door. Hollis followed, turning on the light in the room.
You sat down and he followed, but neither of you moved further. The silence stretched between you for a moment before Hollis finally spoke.
"We should probably talk, right?"
"Yeah, I think we should." You answer almost immediately.
He turns his body to you, looking at you in the eyes. "God, I thought about what I wanted to say to you probably a hundred times."
That brings a soft smile to your face. You turn so you can fully face him, your fingers intertwining with his. "So have I." You admit.
"I've just... I've been so stupid." He starts off. "That night... I didn't see it then, but I see it now. I was way too protective. I should have told you who Roman was. I shouldn't have reacted that way."
You nod, but the mention of Roman makes your stomach twist in a not so pleasant way.
"I'm sorry for how I acted. I've been thinking about it since you left me that night." He continues, his voice wavering slightly.
He sounded genuine. At least you desperately wanted to believe he was.
"Tell me what I need to do to get you back. I miss you. I miss us. I miss what we had."
"You made me feel insane for being upset." You say quietly. "Like I was asking for too much just because I wanted you to talk to me."
"I know." He says, his grip tightening around your fingers.
"And every time I tried to talk to you, you pushed me away."
"I know. I know and I hate myself for it." He mumbles through his teeth. "Tell me what I have to do to make this right. I miss you so much, I don't want that night to be the last thing between us."
You scoot closer to him, resting your hand across his cheek. He looks up at you, and you can tell he's really trying to apologize.
You offer him a small smile and he smiles back. "Hollis, listen to me."
He nods, squeezing your hand in confirmation.
"That night was something I'll never forgive you for. You made me feel stupid and used." You start off and you can tell that's not what he was hoping to hear.
"Baby-" He mumbles and you cut him off.
"No, let me finish." You say and he nods. "I don't think I can forgive you, but I'm willing to try. I want to try. But, this time, I want you to try too."
Hollis stared at you for a moment before nodding. "I will."
"I need you to talk to me." You continued. "Even when you're angry. Even if the conversation is uncomfortable. You can't disappear on me every time it gets difficult and then come back when it suits you."
"I won't."
"And you can't make me feel guilty for caring about you."
His expression softened immediately. "You're right. I'll communicate. I'll stop shutting you out when it gets difficult. I'll do whatever it takes."
You searched his face for any sign to prove to you that he didn't mean it. When you found none, you smiled.
"I'm serious. I'll be different this time." He added.
You squeeze his hand again and exhale softly. "Not everything's gonna be back to normal tonight."
"I know, baby." He smiles.
"We start over. Slowly this time."
Hollis nods, bringing your hand to his lips and placing a soft kiss against your knuckles. "As slow as you need it to be."
You choose to believe him despite the voice in your head telling you not to.
You recognized Roman's car before you've even seen it. The distinct sound of it's engine was now almost engraved into your brain from all the times he's picked you up and drove you home. You don't think you've even used your car once since you two started hanging out.
Once he's parked, he lets you know with a quiet honk. You smile and walk towards the car, only to be met with the sound of loud music and a smiling Roman in the driver's seat.
"Hey gorgeous." Roman says as you sit down into the passenger seat.
"Roman, it's too early for this." You immediately shut him down.
He's been calling you gorgeous ever since that night. It always brings a smile to your face and butterflies in your stomach. It's annoying, the way only one word can make you feel like that.
He smiles at that and reverses his car, backing out of your apartment's parking lot. Once he's back on the road, he turns the music down and switches his gaze to you.
"Alright, navigate me please. I have no idea where Vic lives." Roman says, a soft chuckle leaving his mouth.
"Right." You start. "Just go straight and then take the first left turn." You continue explaining.
Roman nods, starting the engine again. The drive is quiet, but not uncomfortable. While he's focused on the road, you're resting your head on the window, humming to whatever song the radio was playing.
You take your phone out, texting Vic a quick 'there soon, come outside' before turning your attention back to Roman. He was still focused on the road, his head swaying to the rhythm of the song. You only stare at him. At the way his hair falls over his shoulders so effortlessly. The way his hand shifts the gear. The way he's so effortless and relaxed, yet somehow still guarded and mysterious makes a smile break out on your face.
He quickly glances at you and immediately smiles. His smile is different, though. You can feel he's about to say something entirely stupid.
"There something on my face?" He asks and you immediately roll your eyes. "You keep staring at me."
You shake your head and look away. "God forbid a girl admires her friend."
He chuckles, refocusing back to the road as he turns left as you instructed. "Where to now?"
"Just go straight. She should be outside."
He nods and continues driving down the street, slowing down a bit so he could spot her. After about three minutes, he spots Vic's blonde hair. He parks right in front of her and she jumps into his backseat.
The car is silent for about 30 seconds before Vic starts. "So..." She glances at him through the rearview mirror. "You're the Roman I've been hearing so much about?"
You groan, but Roman only laughs and plays along. "Depends on who's asking."
"Oh, only her best friend." Vic continues, flipping her hair over her shoulder.
Roman lets out another laugh, shaking his head, and you canβt help but smile. Watching the two of them click so effortlessly makes something warm settle in your chest.
"And? Am I passing?" Roman continues the banter.
"The jury's still out. Better behave, though." She responds back instantly.
The conversation drifts effortlessly after that. Vic pokes fun at Romanβs music taste, Roman fires back by making fun of the the shirt she's wearing and before long the two of them are laughing like theyβve known each other their entire lives.
After about 15 minutes, Roman's car comes to a stop in front of a random diner. He parks not too far away from the entrance.
You're immediately relieved to see that there's also seating outside, since the morning has been pretty sunny.
Once the three of you step out of the car, Roman instinctively falls into step beside you as you make your way toward the diner. He reaches the door first and holds it open without a second thought and waits for you and Vic to walk through before following behind.
You donβt even notice it but Vic does.
Inside, Roman lets you order first. Afterwards when the three of you find a seat outside, he slides into the seat opposite of you without either of you having to think about it.
When your drinks arrive, Roman excuses himself to the bathroom and the second heβs out of earshot, Vic slowly turns toward you with the biggest grin youβve ever seen.
βOh donβt start.β You sigh, already knowing exactly where this is going.
βIβm just sayingβ¦β She drags out, leaning her elbows onto the table. βYou two have a veryβ¦ established routine.β
You frown. βWhat?β
βHe walks beside you and he held the door.β She points out. βHe let you order first.β
You only roll your eyes at her. βHeβs polite.β
βHe literally looked at you before deciding where to sit.β
"Okay now youβre making things up.β
Vic laughs at that. "I promise Iβm not.β
You shake your head, reaching for your drink. βWeβre just friends.β
Vic raises an eyebrow. βRight..." She stops for a moment. "So why does he act like your boyfriend?β
You nearly choke on your coffee. βHe does not.β
βHe absolutely does.β She nudges your side.
βHe is literally just being nice.β
Vic smiles over the rim of her cup. βWhatever helps you sleep at night.β
Just at that moment, Roman walks back to the table, sliding into his seat. Vic only giggles beside you as she watches him.
"What's so funny?" He asks, looking at the both of you.
"Oh, nothing. Don't you worry about it." She replies.
After that, the three of you fall back into conversation. You talk about everything and nothing all at once. From childhood memories with Vic to the story of how Roman broke his foot while skateboarding and trying to impress a girl.
The waitress refills your coffees twice before any of you even notice the time passing. You canβt remember the last time spending time with someone felt this easy. The conversation never stalls. Somehow no one has to force it.

By the time you made it through the checkout line you were starting to think texting Roman had been a mistake. Mostly because there was something embarrassing about admitting you'd spotted someone across a grocery store and immediately thought of him.
You pushed your cart through the automatic doors and into the summer heat. The parking lot was busy. People moved in every direction, loading groceries into trunks, wrangling shopping carts, yelling at children.
For a second, you didn't see him.
Then, a deep voice came behind you. "There you are."
You turned around, following the voice. Roman was leaning against the metal railing outside the entrance, sunglasses pushed up into his hair.
The smug grin on his face told you he'd been watching you look for him.
You immediately regretted everything. "Don't."
"Don't what?" He raised an eyebrow.
You pointed at him. "Whatever expression that is."
He laughed. "What expression?"
"The one that says you're about to be insufferable."
"Too late." He said through a chuckle.
You groaned.
Roman pushed away from the railing. "You know, most people would've just walked over and said hi."
You rolled your eyes so hard it almost hurt. Unfortunately, you were already smiling. Roman noticed.
"I should've blocked your number." You groaned, pushing the cart past him toward your car.
"You say that every time we talk." Roman replied as he fell into step beside you, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
"Because I mean it every time." You shot back.
"Liar." Roman said with a grin.
You rolled your eyes and kept walking. God, he was annoying.
You reached your car and dug through your bag for your keys. Before you could unlock the trunk, Roman reached into the cart and grabbed two grocery bags.
"Excuse you." You said, staring at him.
"What?" Roman asked, glancing over innocently.
"I can carry my own groceries." You tell him.
"I know." Roman replied.
"Then put them down." You said.
"No." Roman answered immediately.
You stopped walking and stared at him. Roman stared right back. Neither of you moved. A second later, he turned and started walking toward the trunk like he'd already won the argument.
"You are unbelievable." You muttered as you unlocked the car.
"I've been called worse." Roman said, setting the bags down.
"Frequently, I'm guessing." You replied.
Roman laughed as he leaned against the back of your car. "Usually by Hollis."
You froze for a second. The mention of Hollis's name made something twist in your stomach. Roman noticed immediately.
"So..." Roman said after a moment, straightening up. "Now what?"
You closed the trunk and crossed your arms. "What do you mean now what?" You asked.
Roman blinked. "You texted me." He pointed out.
"To see if it was you." You reminded him.
"And now you've confirmed it was me." Roman replied.
You rolled your eyes. "You're ridiculous."
"Thank you." He nodded.
"That wasn't a compliment." You say, face completely straight.
"I choose to believe it was." Roman shot back immediately.
For a moment, neither of you spoke. The silence wasn't awkward. It was surprisingly comfortable. Roman kicked lightly at the pavement before glancing over at you.
"You hungry?" He asked, tilting his head slightly.
You narrowed your eyes at him. "That's your plan?" You asked, crossing your arms.
"It's a good plan." Roman replied with a shrug.
"It's barely a plan." Youu pointed out, shaking your head.
Roman laughed under his breath. "Yet you're still here." He said, looking at you knowingly.
You groaned dramatically. "I hate when you're right." You muttered, pushing off your car.
Roman grinned. "Good thing I'm right a lot." He replied as he started walking.
You immediately rolled your eyes and followed after him. "Don't get used to it." You warned, falling into step beside him.
"No promises." Roman said, shoving his hands into his pockets again.
You walked in silence for a moment before looking over at him.
"Where are we even going?" You asked.
Roman glanced around the parking lot.
"No clue." He admitted with a smile.
You stopped walking for a second.
"You seriously don't know?" you asked incredulously.
"Nope." Roman replied, popping the 'p'.
You stared at him. "You are genuinely the least helpful person I've ever met."
Roman placed a hand over his heart. "That's actually kinda hurtful." He said dramatically.
"No it isn't." You replied immediately.
"You're right." Roman laughed.
A smile tugged at the corner of your lips.
The two of you ended up wandering through the shopping center with no real destination in mind. At some point Roman dragged you into a convenience store.
"This drink changed my life." Roman announced as he pulled a bottle from the cooler.
You looked at the label. "That looks disgusting." You said flatly.
Roman gasped dramatically. "Don't disrespect greatness." He replied.
You snorted. "It literally looks radioactive." You pointed out.
Roman unscrewed the cap and took a sip.
"You're just jealous." He said.
You stared at him. "Of what?"
"My refined taste." Roman replied confidently.
You laughed. "Refined?"
"Extremely refined." Roman nodded.
"You have the palate of a twelve year old." You informed him.
Roman stopped walking. "That's a crazy thing to say to someone who willingly eats gas station sushi."
"How do you know that?" You asked suspiciously.
Roman immediately looked pleased with himself. "Hollis told me." He admitted.
You groaned and dropped your head back. "Of course he did." You muttered.
"I was horrified." Roman said, shaking his head.
"You should be." You replied.
The conversation drifted after that. Music. Friends. Random stories. Nothing important. And somehow that was what made it nice. You weren't trying to figure out what he really meant. You weren't overthinking every text. You weren't wondering if you were annoying him. You were just talking. The realization hit harder than it should have.
Your phone buzzed in your pocket. You barely noticed it at first. Roman was halfway through a story about something Nate had done when your phone buzzed again. And then again.
Roman stopped mid sentence. "That's either an emergency or somebody's obsessed with you." He said, nodding toward your pocket.
You pulled your phone out. The second you saw the name on the screen, your stomach twisted.
Hollis.
The second you saw Hollis's name, everything else faded into the background. Including Roman. You hated that. You hated how easy it was.
Just minutes ago you'd been laughing. Walking around with Roman felt effortless in a way you hadn't expected. No tension. No arguments. No wondering whether you'd say the wrong thing. Just easy.
"What?" Roman asked, shoving his hands into his pockets.
You looked up. "Huh?"
"Your face." Roman tilted his head. "Something happened."
You looked back at the messages. "Hollis texted me."
Roman's expression shifted almost immediately. The smile he'd been wearing faded just enough for you to notice.
"Oh." Roman replied, looking away for a second.
You hated that. You hated the tiny knot of guilt that appeared in your stomach.
"He wants me to come over." You admitted, rubbing the back of your neck.
Roman nodded once. "Figured." He said, kicking lightly at a crack in the pavement.
You rolled your eyes and looked away. Neither of you spoke for a moment. The noise of the parking lot filled the silence. Shopping carts rattled across the pavement. Cars pulled in and out of spaces. Somewhere behind you, a kid was crying because his mother wouldn't buy him ice cream.
Roman shoved his hands into his pockets. "You should go." Roman said after a moment.
Your head snapped toward him. "What?"
"You heard me." Roman replied.
"I don't have to." You said.
Roman looked at you. The expression on his face was impossible to read.
"You don't." Roman agreed.
The silence stretched. Then your phone buzzed again.
"I'm serious." Roman said. "Just go."
You looked down at your phone. You knew it was pathetic.
You looked back at Roman. "I'm sorry." You said quietly.
Roman's smile returned immediately. "For what?" He asked.
You gestured vaguely between the two of you. "This."
Roman shook his head. "Don't apologize."
You stared at him. For some reason that made you feel even worse.
"You sure?" You asked.
"No." He admitted. "But I'm trying to be mature."
A laugh escaped you before you could stop it. For a second neither of you moved. Then Roman stepped backward.
"Go." Roman said, giving you a small wave. "Before he sends a search party."
You laughed again then you climbed into your car.
As you pulled out of the parking lot, Roman was still standing there, watching. And for some reason, you found yourself checking the rearview mirror long after he disappeared from view.
By the time you pulled into Hollis's driveway, most of your frustration had already started to fade. Which was embarrassing. You sat in your car for a second, staring at the front door. You were still angry. At least you thought you were. Then your phone buzzed.
where r u
You rolled your eyes.
outside
The front door opened almost immediately. Your stomach betrayed you instantly.
"Pathetic." You muttered to yourself before climbing out of the car.
Hollis was already standing on the porch. The second he saw you, he smiled like nothing had happened. Like you hadn't told him to fuck himself two days ago.
"There you are." Hollis said, pushing off the doorframe.
You folded your arms. "Hi."
Hollis stepped closer. "Come here."
You tried to maintain your annoyance for approximately three seconds. Then he wrapped his arms around you. And just like that, most of your anger disappeared. Which only made you angrier.
"Hollis."
"What?" Hollis laughed against your hair.
"You suck." You say, annoyed.
"I know." He smiles, his hands settling on your waist. "I missed you."
Your chest tightened. This was exactly the problem. Because he always did this. Every single time. He'd say something that made you forget why you were upset in the first place.
"You're unbelievable." You muttered.
Hollis grinned. "Still came though."
You hated that he had a point.
The house was empty just like he said it would be. A movie played in the background. Neither of you paid attention to it. You sat curled against his side on the couch while Hollis absentmindedly played with your fingers.
Every now and then he'd kiss your forehead. Or your temple. Or your cheek. Like the last fight had never happened. Like he'd never sent screenshots of your followers. Like he'd never accused you of trying to make him jealous. Like he'd never refused to tell you why Roman mattered so much.
And eventually, the longer it went ignored, the harder it became to ignore.
You glance up at him. Hollis was already looking at you.
"What?" He askes softly, his thumb brushing across your knuckles.
You shook your head. "Nothing."
A small smile pulls at his mouth. "Liar."
You roll your eyes, but there wasn't much conviction behind it.
Maybe it was the way he was looking at you. Maybe it was because you'd missed him. Maybe it was because every time you were around him, your brain seemed to stop working.
Whatever the reason, the argument you'd spent days replaying in your head suddenly felt very far away.
Hollis lifted one hand and tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. The gesture was simple. Your chest tightened.
"Stop looking at me like that." You muttered.
His smile widened. "Like what?"
"You know exactly like what." You say.
He only shakes his head innocently. "I don't."
"You do."
Hollis laughs quietly before leaning closer. For a second neither of you move. The movie continued playing somewhere in the background, forgotten entirely.
His hand settles against your jaw. Your heart immediately sped up.
"Hollis." You whispered.
"Hm?"
You stared at him. You should have said something. You should have brought up the fight. You should have asked the questions that had been bothering you for days.
Instead, you found yourself leaning closer. Hollis met you halfway. The kiss was slow at first. Careful. Like neither of you wanted to acknowledge how much you missed each other.
His hand slipped around your waist, pulling you closer against his side. And just like that the conversation you've been trying to have disappeared completely.
The kiss wans't gentle anymore. It was heavy with all the things you haven't said to each other for days.
Hollis shifts, pulling you more firmly into his lap. The weight of him is grounding, but it also makes your heart race in a way thatβs almost annoying. He knows exactly how to make your body betray your brain.
His hands, which were just playing with your fingers moments ago, are suddenly everywhere.
One slides under the hem of your shirt, his palm hot and slightly rough against the skin of your waist. You gasp, the sound muffled when he captures your lips again, his tongue sweeping against yours in a way that makes your toes curl.
"Hollis..." You breathe against his mouth, but you aren't sure if you're telling him to stop or to keep going.
"I've got you, doll." He murmurs, his voice a low vibration that settles deep in your chest.
His hand moves higher, his thumb grazing the underside of your breast, and you arch into him instinctively. Itβs a desperate, aching sensation. You want to pull away and demand an apology, but when his teeth graze your bottom lip and his hand slides higher, all you can do is wrap your arms around his neck and pull him closer.
Hollis pulls back just enough to look at you. His eyes are dark, hooded and completely focused on you in a way that makes you feel exposed.
"You're so beautiful." He whispers.
"Shut up." You mutter but thereβs no bite in it.
He doesn't wait for you to argue. His hands move to the hem of your shirt again, tugging it upward. You lift your arms, helping him, wanting the fabric gone as much as he does. When the shirt is finally tossed somewhere onto the floor, the cool air of the living room hits your skin, making you shiver but the chill doesn't last long. Hollis is already leaning back in, his hands sliding over your ribs, his thumbs tracing the curve of your waist.
He moves to your jeans next. The sound of the zipper feels deafening in the quiet room. You feel a flicker of that old annoyance how easily he can just strip away your defenses, both literally and figuratively.
As he works the button loose, his knuckles graze your stomach, and you let out a shaky breath. Heβs being patient, slow, almost teasing, and itβs infuriating.
When he finally pushes the jeans down your hips, the sensation of his hands sliding over your bare thighs is almost too much. You're trembling, and you know it's because you're desperate to feel him against you, skin to skin.
When he finally pulls his own shirt over his head and tosses it aside the sight of him makes your breath hitch.
The dim light of the living room catches the hard lines of his shoulders and the steady rise and fall of his chest. He looks hungry. He looks like heβs been waiting for this just as long as you have.
Then he moves. He leans forward, pressing his bare chest against yours. The contact is sudden and electric.
The heat of his skin against your own is so intense it almost makes you gasp. Itβs a heavy, grounding sensation the friction of his hair on your chest, the solid weight of his muscles, the way your heartbeats seem to sync up the second you touch.
You let out a long, shaky exhale, your hands sliding up his back to grip his shoulders. His skin is warm, slightly damp from the heat of the moment, and you find yourself pressing closer, needing to close every single millimeter of space between you.
Itβs infuriating how much you need this. How easily he can just touch you and make the rest of the world, the fight, the jealousy, the silence just disappear.
Hollis lets out a low, ragged sound at the contact, his forehead dropping against yours. His hands slide down from your waist, his palms flat against the small of your back, pulling you flush against him until thereβs nothing left but heat and the desperate, heavy thrum of your own pulse.
"God, you have no idea what you do to me." He murmurs against your skin, his voice sounding wrecked.
"Tell me." You whisper, your fingers digging into his shoulders, needing him to finally say the words heβs been hiding behind.
The way heβs looking at you changes. The softness is gone replaced by something darker, something much more possessive. Itβs the same intensity he had when he was questioning you about Roman but now heβs using that energy to pull you under him.
He doesn't just touch you heΒ claimsΒ you. His hands move from your back to your hips, his fingers digging into your skin with a firmness thatβs almost bruising.
When he kisses you this time it isnβt slow. Itβs hard and demanding, his teeth grazing your lip in a way that makes your head tilt back exposing your throat to him.
You gasp as he moves his mouth to the sensitive skin of your neck. He nips at your shoulder, his breath hot and ragged against your skin and you can feel the sharp, stinging heat of it. Itβs possessive. Itβs a silent physical way of telling you that youβreΒ his, regardless of the arguments or the people he thinks are looking at you.
"Hollis." You moan, your hands sliding from his shoulders to his hair, pulling him even closer. You should probably tell him he's being too much. You should tell him that he's being dramatic.
But as his hand slides lower, his fingers finding the slick, aching heat between your thighs, all you can do is arch your hips into him. The frustration of the last few days boils over into a desperate, heavy need.
Heβs acting like heβs trying to make up for every second of silence, every moment he kept you at arm's length, and as he pushes two fingers deep inside you, you realize you don't want him to be gentle. You want him to be this intense. You want him to remind you exactly who you belong to.
The tension in the room is so thick it feels heavy, pressing down on you until youβre breathless. When Hollis finally pulls back, his eyes are dark and focused, tracking the way your thighs tremble where theyβre draped over his hips. He doesn't hesitate. He moves between your legs, his weight settling firmly against you. Then he enters you.
Itβs a slow, agonizingly deep slide that feels like itβs claiming every empty inch of you. You let out a broken, high pitched sound halfway between a sob and a moan as your body stretches to accommodate the sheer length of him. The sensation is overwhelming. A sudden, intense fullness that makes your vision blur. Itβs the feeling of being completely filled, completely occupied by him, and for a moment, you can't even breathe.
"Hollis." You choke out again, your fingers digging into the hard muscles of his shoulders, your nails leaving faint red crescents in his skin.
He doesn't wait for you to catch your breath. He begins to move, his thrusts deep and rhythmic, driving into you with a desperate pace.
Every time he hits that perfect, sensitive spot deep inside, a jolt of electricity shoots through your entire nervous system, making your hips buck instinctively against him. The friction is incredible the slick, wet heat of your bodies sliding together, the heavy thud of his pelvis against yours, and the sound of your combined, ragged breathing filling the quiet room.
He leans down, his chest crushing your breasts as he drives into you again, harder this time. The sensation is almost too much. Itβs a blunt, heavy pressure that makes your toes curl and your head toss back against the cushions. You can feel the sweat slicking your skin, making every touch feel even more intense.
"Look at me." He commands, his voice a low, wrecked growl.
You force your eyes open to find him watching you. He looks completely undone, his jaw tight, his eyes searching yours as if heβs trying to read every single thought youβve had during this fight.
The rhythm then shifts from desperate to something much more deliberate. He reaches down, his large hands gripping your thighs and pinning them back against the couch, exposing you completely to him.
The sudden, firm hold makes you gasp, but the sensation is replaced by the way he tilts his hips, adjusting his angle to hit that one specific, sensitive spot deep inside you with every heavy thrust.
He catches your wrists, pinning them above your head into the cushions, his fingers bruising the soft skin of your arms as he anchors you to him.
The sound of it is visceral. The air is thick with the heavy, rhythmic slap of his hips hitting yours. Every time he thrusts, thereβs a heavy, squelching sound that makes your breath hitch in a way thatβs almost painful. Youβre a mess of tangled hair, sweat slicked skin and desperate, broken sounds.
"Hollis,Β fuck." You sob, the words catching in your throat as he shifts his weight, his pelvis grinding against yours in a way that feels like heβs trying to fuse your bodies together.
He doesn't answer with words. Instead, he answers with a low growl. His face is buried in the crook of your neck, his teeth grazing your skin as he breathes in your scent like a man starving.
Heβs moving so fast now, his thrusts becoming short, shallow, and incredibly hard, driving you toward the edge with a ruthless precision.
The intensity is almost too much to bear. Itβs a heavy, throbbing pressure that fills your entire vision. You feel the heat of him, the slickness of your own arousal coating his skin and the sheer, overwhelming force of his body against yours. Youβre clawing at the cushions, your hips bucking upward to meet every strike, your entire body wound tight like it's about to snap.
He lets out a raw, wrecked sound a shout thatβs half groan, half sob as he thrusts into you one last time.
He slams into you, his entire body shuddering with the force of his climax, and you feel the hot, pulsing sensation of him filling you as you shatter. Youβre left gasping, your muscles twitching in the aftermath, your skin flushed and damp, completely undone by the sheer, unbridled chaos of him.
The silence that follows is heavy but for once it isn't the tense, angry silence of the last few days. Itβs a soft and quiet, filled only by the sound of your synchronized, ragged breathing.
Hollis doesn't pull away immediately. He stays heavy on top of you, his forehead resting against your shoulder, his skin still damp and radiating heat against yours. His arms are wrapped around you, holding you with a gentleness that feels like a silent apology.
In the dim light of the living room, with your limbs tangled and your heart finally slowing down, it feels like the fight is actually over. It feels like the walls have finally come down.
You let out a long, shaky exhale, your fingers tracing the line of his spine, enjoying the way his muscles slowly relax under your touch.Β
"Hollis?" You whisper, your voice still a little wrecked from the climax.
He makes a low, contented sound in his throat, his lips brushing against your collarbone. "Yeah?"
"Can we talk about it?" You ask, your heart starting to pick up a nervous rhythm again.
The change is instantaneous. The warmth drains from his body as he shifts, pulling himself up and away from you. The sudden absence of his weight feels like a cold slap. You watch as the softness in his eyes vanishes, replaced by that familiar, guarded mask.
"Do we have to?" He asks, his voice losing its warmth and turning flat, almost clinical.
He sits up on the edge of the couch, his back to you, the muscles of his shoulders tensing.
"We can't just keep doing this." You say, sitting up and pulling the discarded throw blanket around your chest.
You feel small, exposed and suddenly very foolish for thinking things had changed. "We can't just do this to pretend everything is okay."
"And what do you want me to say?" He snaps, the sudden volume of his voice making you flinch. "That I'm sorry? That it was a mistake? Weβve been circling the same argument for days and weβre still in the same place."
"Because we haven'tΒ talked!" You protest, your voice rising to match his. "You get upset. You don't talk to me and then you invite me over to fuck and nothing ever gets resolved. We always end up here."
Β He stands up abruptly, not even bothering to reach for his clothes, his silhouette dark and imposing in the dim light. "Then stop giving me reasons to be upset at you. Have you ever thought about that?"
You stare at him. For a second, you genuinely can't believe what you're hearing.
A bitter laugh escapes you. "Are you serious?"
Hollis drags a hand through his hair and looks away. "Don't."
"No, answer me." You stand up, tightening the blanket around yourself. "Are you actually blaming me right now?"
"I'm not blaming you." He lets out a frustrated sigh.
"That's exactly what you're doing."
Hollis lets out a groan. "You know what? This is why I didn't want to talk about it."
"Because you don't want to admit you're wrong?" You challenge him.
"Because every conversation turns into this." He quickly shuts you down.
You laugh again.
"This?" You gesture between the two of you. "Me asking you one question?"
His jaw tightens. You already know that look. The conversation is over. At least for him.
"Hollis." You warn.
"What?" He asks, annoyed.
"Just tell me the truth."
The room falls silent. For a second, you think he might. You think he might finally explain.
Instead, he shakes his head. "I don't wanna do this."
Something inside you sinks. Not because you're surprised. You're just tired.
"So that's it?" You ask quietly.
Hollis doesn't answer. The silence is answer enough. You look around the room. At the discarded clothes. At the movie still playing in the background. At the couch where, twenty minutes ago, you thought things were finally getting better.
Suddenly it all feels stupid and embarrassing.
You grab your clothes from the floor. "Hollis." You call out to him again.
He closes his eyes. "What."
"You know what the worst part is?"
He doesn't respond. You pull your shirt over your head. "The worst part is that I keep giving you chances to talk to me."
Hollis looks away. You nod once like you've finally gotten your answer. "Right." The word barely comes out above a whisper.
You grab your keys.
The sound finally makes him look up. "Where are you going?"
The irony of the question almost hurts. "You told me exactly where I stand."
"Baby-" He starts but you cut him off before he can finish.
"No, I'm done."
The words hang between you. Neither of you move.
Then Hollis exhales sharply and looks away again. "If you're gonna keep arguing, just go."
The sentence hits harder than yelling would've. Because he sounds exhausted. Because a part of you thinks he means it. So you leave.
The drive home is a blur. Streetlights move across the windshield.
Your phone sits untouched in the passenger seat. For the first ten minutes, you keep expecting it to light up. A text. A call. Something.
Nothing comes.
By the time you pull into your driveway, your chest feels hollow. You sit in the dark for a long moment. Then you unlock your phone.
Your thumb hovers over Vic's contact. You already know she won't answer. So it keeps moving. Until it lands on Roman.
