Nico had a lot of woulds, coulds, shoulds for someone who was so young. It was enough to make her head spin when she remembered that she hadnât even hit 25 yet, that she had been forced to grow up so young because of things so totally out of her control. Honestly, it made her feel angry. But it also made her feel guilty and nostalgic and heartbroken, so it was hard for Nico to harness that anger for anything. She just kept running all her regrets over in her head, just kept replaying all the decisions she made to see if there was something she could have done differently so she wouldnât end up here.Â
But it wasnât so easy as just closing her eyes and wishing for the past back. She couldnât go back and change any of the decisions she had made, she just had to live with the results of what happened. Her near miss with Karolina was one of the many moments she played over in her head often. There were a few different parts of her life that came up quite frequently in her thoughts but now that she was seeing Karolina again, that one came right back up to the surface.Â
âUh, yeah, for a little while now.â Nicoâs hand came up to hold onto the strap of her slate gray messenger bag, her other hand dipping into the pocket of her draping black pants as she looked Karolina over. It had been too long. Nico wasnât sure how she felt about seeing her again. âYou look well. Youâre living here, too?â It wasnât that hard to believeâthe runaways had parted ways not that far off. It wouldnât be unreasonable that more than one of them would resettle in Star City. They were bound to see each other again. Nico wondered if she had been dreading itâand hated herself for even entertaining that thought.Â
âOh... great,â Karolina chirped, but the response felt forced. She hated that. It wasnât like her to be fake, to struggle through superficial exchanges for the sake of being polite, but it felt better than bringing up questions that would definitely make both of them even more uncomfortable. It was part of her personality to facilitate peace. Ease. The awkward tension was palpable and she wanted to fix it, for Nicoâs sake more so than her own. â...I mean, sort of great, considering the state of this place, but...âÂ
She paused, but then nodded. âYeah. For now. And thanks, you look...â She made a slight gesture toward Nico, then drew her hand back to tensely tuck a piece of hair behind her ear. âYou look good, too.â Should she have said that? What had happened between them replayed in her mind over an over, like a broken record, while she obsessively tried to figure out what sheâd done wrong. At one point had she said the wrong thing? When could she have changed the outcome? It was a pointless sort of torture, but she couldnât help it.Â
Crossing her arms, Karolina bit the inside of her lip. âAre you staying at Lauraâs safe house?â That had been one of her first stops, although she didnât assume Nico would have had the same interest in seeing it, or would seek out the help of any institution even if she needed it. They had both always been independent in that way. Still, she couldnât help but be concerned for Nicoâs safety and wellbeing. There were too many dangers to count.
