“It might be blasé, but I dunno how else someone would make that choice. Pros and cons list?” Gwen was essentially having to decide which group of people she cared more about, or at least which group she wanted to spend the rest of her life around.

“I mean, I can’t relate to this overabundance of loved ones problem, but…” he shrugged, “it doesn’t sound like there’s a winning choice. Unless a couple of universes smash together. Then I guess we’ve got bigger problems anyway.”

“I’ve tried that one. It doesn’t really do me any favors,” she said with a soft huff of laughter. Gwen had never been good at the hard decisions. She knew that no matter what she did here, someone was going to end up hurt. 

She laughed again. “There’s more to it than that, though having people around who care is a plus,” she said. “I don’t know if I’m supposed to be here, you know? I thought I was when my watch wasn’t working, but now it’s fixed and I think I might be...” She paused, thoughtful. “I don’t know, doing damage.”

Gwen couldn’t help but come through with cocky remarks when she was helping people out. How else was she supposed to warn people about doing stupid shit? She swung down between the alleys, offering a hand to the man on the ground. “I’m a lot stronger than I look. And those guys aren’t coming around to give you a blue ribbon.” She flipped so that she was almost upside down, her hand stretched completely out towards Chris where he stood on the ground. She had pulled plenty of people out of situations like this in the past few weeks and months, so she knew: if they got too close, then both of them were going to be stuck thanks to those damn dampeners. They’d have to move fast.

He couldn’t blame her for that. There was a reason people became vigilantes in the first place. Someone had to do something. The ‘something’ didn’t always have an easy answer like it did for him - one of the only blessings he could probably say he had. At least there was a clear path he could take that didn’t involve fighting.

“No luck getting home?” Maybe that wasn’t his place to ask. He wasn’t even sure Gwen still wanted to go. They’d never been close enough for him to know that. He ran his hand along the back of his neck. “You don’t have to answer that.”

Gwen was lost before she became spider-woman. She wanted to make a difference but she didn’t know how she could do anything of consequence until she got her powers and her purpose. Perhaps if she had grown up normal, she would have found something else, but this had fulfilled everything she felt had been missing before. She couldn’t just sit idly when she had the power to help. 

At his question, she paused, chewing slowly. “It’s complicated,” she replied with a shrug. “I can get home, but I don’t know if I should.” She turned to look at Josh. “You think flipping a coin might be a little too blasé?”

Waking up next to someone and not being annoyed by it was something new for her. MJ never got tired of being near Gwen. If anything, she even missed her when she wasn’t around. She thought about her constantly. It would have been alarming if she’d stopped to analyze it - thankfully, she’d avoided doing so thus far. “Think you did,” she said a semi-apologetic half-smile. “How about I make it worth your while next time?” 

Gwen had never been in a serious relationship. Sure, she had dated around, and she had some exes floating out there in another universe, but it had never carried the weight of what she felt about MJ. She wrinkled her nose lightly. “I deserved it,” she replied. Gwen kinked an eyebrow at MJ. “That sounds promising,” she replied with a crooked smirk.

“I’ve perfected the art of faking it so people think I understand.” Just the right amount of nodding usually did it. Most of the time Bucky didn’t care to be filled in, so skipping over the entire conversation was much, much easier.

He fiddled with the tool for a second longer until the little torch was lit and a tiny gout of blue fire appeared at the end of it. “I guess it’s not that different from giving yourself stitches.” It was a lot different, but he tried not to dwell on it anymore. At least the arm from Wakanda felt like it was his and not so much like something that had just been put there.

“Yeah, I’ve noticed. I’m pretty sure that I figured out your tic for every time I use some dumb slang you don’t understand, though,” she teased lightly. She could only imagine how exhausting it would be to live your life with people constantly explaining things to you. 

Gwen chuckled at the sight of the torch. “I’m really freaking proud of that, you better use it sometime,” she said. “Not even for your arm, just like, get a little bit of light welding in at some point.” Gwen knew that it was probably a difficult thing to talk about, so she was quick to gloss everything over.

He bit off half of the piece and was silent as he chewed. Even sitting down, the view wasn’t half bad. He could even spot a few sad little stars if he squinted.

“You better watch your back. Maybe it’s not worth it right now.” But he already knew that was pointless advice. No one who’d chosen to do the superhero thing backed down from it because of personal risk. “Yeah. Moved it a few months ago before shit hit the fan. Or well, before this particular shit hit this particular fan.” The move definitely hadn’t been unprompted.

Gwen chewed on her half of the protein bar with a thoughtful expression her features. She looked up at the sky, wondering if she would see the streak of a hero’s jet stream across the darkened night. Nothing. Figured. 

“Yeah, well, it’s not like I have much else going for me. I might as well take this risk instead of sitting around and wondering what more I could be doing,” she pointed out. Gwen looked down for a moment, swallowing thickly. “It’s the only way I feel useful. I can’t just sit around and do nothing.” She looked up at Josh, pursing her lips slightly. “There’s always new shit hitting the fan, huh?”

MJ planted her feet on the bed so she could push herself back against Gwen, snuggling her cheek against her shoulder and swinging her legs over her lap. Scoffing softly, she couldn’t contain a small giggle. “I bet I could still get you out. I have my ways.” Well, she knew a few people with money, anyway, as well as plenty of allies that would want Gwen free. “Never underestimate a resourceful pissed off girlfriend.”

Gwen wrinkled her nose lightly as she looked down at MJ, her hand coming up to push stay red hairs away from her face, still stuck to her skin from where her face was pressed against her pillow. “I’m sure you do. I wouldn’t want to come across you in a dark alley,” she teased gently, grinning down at her. “Oh, never ever,” she replied, shaking her head. “I’ve made that mistake before. With you, if I remember correctly.”

“I wish I still didn’t know what Wikipedia was.” As amazing as the twenty-first century was in a lot of ways, there were definitely plenty of things he could’ve done without. His very unwanted fame (or was notoriety a better word?) was at the top of the list.

He sat the food carton down and took the gift, which was without a doubt the first one anyone had given to him in decades upon decades. He frowned at it maybe for too long. It didn’t have anything to do with the wrapping paper. “You didn’t have to do any of this,” he told her quietly, flipping the tool open and pressing the tip of his flesh-and-blood finger against the edge of some of the pieces. “But thank you. And yeah, that does…suck.” An understatement.

“You have to admit that it’s much easier than just asking around and hoping for the best every time you don’t know some dumb pop culture reference,” she pointed out, a crooked smirk on her features. 

She folded her arms lightly over her chest, shrugging once. “Of course I did,” she replied. “What kind of friend would I be if I didn’t do cheesy things?” Gwen tilted her head and watched him examine the tool with a soft sigh. “I would have given you more on their if I could have, but it has a tiny butane torch, so I guess that’s about as much as I can put in there,” she joked lightly.

Bucky hadn’t exactly intended to stay in super close contact with the people he helped, at least not beyond making sure that his part of things had worked out. But Gwen wasn’t exactly the same situation. Mostly he was just baffled that she actually wanted to stick around in the first place.

“Something is probably my thing. I’m working on it.” He eyed the boxes of food for a second before reaching for one. “How’d you even know it was my birthday?” Probably public information. An uncomfortable amount of things were.

Gwen snapped apart a pair of chopsticks, brushing off any tiny splinters before digging into a carton of noodles, leaning against the counter as she ate. “Wikipedia,” she replied simply. She paused for a moment, sensing his discomfort before shrugging. “I wanted to make sure you weren’t a psychopath before I let you do my ID.” 

She held up a finger, stabbing her chopsticks back into the box so they’d stick there before reaching into her pocket and taking out a small, crudely wrapped object. She winced at the wrapping paper—it was covered in laughing santa faces. “That’s all they had at the Rite-Aid,” she said, holding it out to him. 

It was surprisingly solid for such a small object, though it didn’t weigh all that much. She waited for him to unwrap it before she started explaining. “It’s a multitool. For your arm.” She gestured vaguely at it. “I can’t imagine how much it must suck if something happens and you can’t fix it. This is small enough to carry.”

He had put exactly zero effort into making the apartment feel like anything beyond a temporary place to sleep, both because he’d only been there a couple of weeks and because it probably was temporary. While he technically met the requirements to be in District X, and for the time being it was the safest place he could get, it didn’t even remotely feel like he belonged there.

As soon as he opened the door for Gwen, Alpine slipped out into the hallway and started to wind in a figure eight between her legs, already purring. “That’s-“ his eyes trailed up to the balloon and he raised an eyebrow. “I appreciate the accuracy.”

Gwen put the boxes in her hand down on the counter and dropped the weighted balloons so they would float next to the table. “I try my best,” she replied, leaning down and immediately scooping Alpine into her arms. Cradling the cat like a baby, Gwen barely looked up at Bucky as she spoke. “Chinese food. I got your usual,” she replied. “And underneath it is the cake, but we can save that disaster for later.” After coddling the kitten for a minute, Gwen put Alpine down, going through the food and setting the boxes out on the counter. “I’m sure this isn’t really your thing, but nothing’s really your thing anyway, so you might as well try and enjoy it.”

Gwen’s arm was stacked high with stuff, her other hand rummaging around in her pocket for her phone. When she couldn’t find it, she gave up on trying to text and instead lifted her hand to knock on the door, hoping she wouldn’t spook him. “Hey, Buck, it’s Gwen,” she said. “Open up, your hallway is spooky,” she whined, shoving her hand back into her jacket. When he did open up, she gave him a bright grin. “You didn’t think I’d forget, did you? I promised I’d make you regret ever telling me your birthday.” She stepped into his apartment, two mylar balloons trailing behind her—”HAPPY BIRTHDAY” and “YOU’RE 10” with a 2 tacked on in sharpie so it would read 102. “I made you a cake. It may or may not have a surprise toothpick in it.”

“how adult of you. i, for one, am a struggling freelance investigator with no real skillset or qualifications.” she bows ironically. “so obviously i am rolling in cash and very happy with how my other life is going right now.” she shrugs. “i could always ask stark for money, but hard pass on that one.” kate considers the offer for a moment, then grins. “it’d be nice. but i feel like there are more pressing matters at hand. for example, the whole city going to shit.” the archer dips her head and smiles a little, flattered, glad that someone’s making an effort for her. “yeah. thanks, spider-chick.”

“we’re all just out here struggling and pretending that we’re fine,” she replied. “my qualifications are less than exemplary, i promise.” gwen snorted softly. “i think we’re all completely satisfied in our other lives. that’s why we run around in costumes like it’s halloween every night,” she pointed out with a huff of laughter. “the city will be going to shit in the morning, too. let’s just ditch patrolling tonight. there are plenty of people out here like us, anyway.”

Conner remained where he stood, picking at his teeth with his tongue behind a clenched jaw. “I… have been treating you with respect… until you made this way harder than it needed to be.” Conner grumbled in argument before growling. “Please…” He forced himself to find the word and form it. “I don’t want to join up with the Justice League – working alongside Kal-El would just be too weird… so the Titans are the next best option for me to be able to do something with myself…” He explained. 

“Look… if you let me sign on,” Conner started before pulling a small black stick from his pocket. “I’ll be honest with you about everything regarding myself… everything on Project-Kr, you can read it…” He said. He knew that any good team needed to know its members inside and out if they wanted to be able to trust one another. As much as he didn’t want to give the full details of his creation background to anyone, if it meant this Gwen would take him seriously for his request, then he’d bite the bullet and do so. “Just… let me sign up.” God, he hated pleading with someone.

Gwen scoffed. “If this is what you think is respectful, then I’d hate to see you when you’re being disrespectful,” she replied, running her tongue lightly over her teeth as she observed him speaking. Hearing him plead was a little pathetic, and Gwen was almost inclined to help him out of the conversation, but she was feeling just a little vindictive and a little petty. She let him flail for a little while longer until she accepted him—which she was planning on doing anyway—for her own entertainment more than anything else. 

“You can sign up,” she said. “But if you continue to act like a douche, we can vote you off the island. So play nice.” She looked back at her book, raising a hand and making the shape of a cross in the air in front of him. “Consider yourself anointed or whatever.”

Finally, peace and quiet. The hours near closing were her favorite, mostly because she didn’t have to interact much, and sometimes, she could meditate without any interruptions. This night, however, she could hear footsteps roaming up and down the aisles. Sighing, she decided to start the usual countdown. 

“ … library closes in 10 minutes,” she announced, dryly. 

Gwen popped out from one of the aisles. “Perfect. I was waiting for this place to be shut down.” She leaned against the circulation desk, snapping her gum lightly in her mouth. “Are you Rachel?” she asked, tucking her short hair behind her ear as she observed the other woman. She snapped her gum again. “I might have a proposition for you.”

MJ hadn’t brought up the subject of Gwen’s possible return to her own dimension since they’d argued about it. She hoped Gwen might just… forget, as if the problem could resolve itself, and she tried not to let the possibility eat away at her. “Ohh my god,” she moaned, pushing her hair out of her face as she gave Gwen an exaggerated pout. “Get in here.” She tossed the covers aside and slid over. “But if you ever call me in the middle of the night to come and bail you out, you better believe I’d make you sorry.” 

They were similar in that when something was bothering them, the best course of action was to just ignore it. Perhaps that wasn’t good when they were in a relationship, but it was working so far. They’d deal with problems later when they came up. Gwen laughed and snuggled up in the bed with her, sitting up against the wall and pulling MJ up to lean against her. “I will not be calling you to bail me out. My bail is far too expensive,” she teased.

Accepting the torn piece of paper, Karolina glanced at the number and nodded. “That means don’t put it in my phone, I’m guessing.” Memorization had always come easily, at least it seemed so compared to how she’d seen humans struggle with it. “Does anyone know who you are? Anyone not in the actual… group? I mean, I’m assuming there’s no official roster or anything, but rumors happen. Anyone I should know about?” 

Gwen huffed out a laugh. She paused, pursing her lips slightly in though. “I mean, if you know the JL, we’re pretty tight,” she said with a shrug. “But we’ve been keeping things under pretty tight wraps. I don’t think there’s anything you need to really worry about.”
