Oh look itâs romcom leading man Tom Blyth
peeta says that he is often scared to go to sleep at night (cf, 16). instead, he roams the train (cf, 21). trying to run from the nightmares that are sure to visit him.
but there is something special about how when katniss is with him, he almost always falls asleep immediately (thg, 262; 299; 309; 323; and cf, 84; 89). not scared. because now, he has her to protect him.
and something about how even while hijacked peeta struggled to sleep in the capitol with the star squad (mj, 256). he was finally able to fall asleep with the soft brush of her hand on his hair and the knowledge that she was there (mj, 258). protecting him (mj, 258).
people who only ever watched the movies I need you to fix this because you are missing out so badly on the first real scene Haymitch, Katniss and Peeta have together ⊠the movie gives us? Katniss killing a placemat for? girlboss reasons? mahogany? Peeta just sort of? there? being milquetoast?
whereas the book gives us this masterpiece of feral teenage violence and abrupt dysfunctional paternity:
and a beautiful family was born
some people, without a hint of irony: Peeta âphysically and emotionally abused as a preteen, forced into two consecutive fights to the death, lost his leg and his whole family, tortured and medically experimented on for monthsâ Mellark didnât suffer that much
like i hate the oppression olympics and i hate it even more when people call it that but objectively peeta canonically suffered more than gale. doesnât mean gale didnât suffer at all and it doesnât mean that at the start of the series peeta isnât better off but by the end letâs stop beating around the bush: peeta suffered more.
Yeah but he got to eat stale bread growing up, so clearly he's a privileged prick who never suffered. Everyone knows lower middle class in the poorest district are the people with the greatest advantages in Panem. /s
What the kks Gale what? Did he suffer? Even Coriolanus Snow suffered from his childhood more than the kks did from the war and everything that came after. I hate people who try to victimize Gale Hawthorne when he didn't "suffer" even 2% of what Snow, Lucy, Tigris, Peeta, Katniss and the other victors did. LOL Hunger? They all suffered hunger in the prequel and main trilogy. And yet he was privileged because he had meat and fresh food every day. Privileged because he had a mother who wasn't depressed and supported him and his siblings. Privileged because he didn't lose absolutely anyone in his family after his father who was very x -his mother could take care of the family alone-, he didn't go to the games, he wasn't kidnapped or tortured by the Capitol and those who should have killed him didn't kill him to do justice and a favor to the fandom (the useless Peacekeeper). He even got away with not receiving punishment for killing hundreds of children and innocent people with his own bombs and abusing a minor. That idiot is very lucky. Ah... But Finnick, Johanna, Haymitch, Coriolanus, Peeta, Katniss, etc. didn't suffer at all compared that asshole. Please, read the books.
i think that a lot of the fandom mischaracterises hijacked!peeta and it low key bugs me
because he isn't a single-minded murderer or filled with bloodlust - he's terrified
like a wounded animal, he lashes out at katniss because of how much he fears her; his mind has been so utterly warped that he can't see an escape other than through violence. he's convinced she's going to torture him, so he wants to stop her
which is why i think the idea that he hurts her post-mockingjay isn't a fair assumption; by this point, he's recovered enough that he is no longer violent. even in the capitol, his final descriptive relapse shows him punishing himself before he's willing to lay a hand on katniss
while he'll obviously never fully recover, his reported periods of relapse (grabbing the back of chairs and the like) are drawn from terror, previously aimed at katniss and later at himself as he gains back functionality
he was never warped into a mutt, or stripped of his personhood, or turned into a sadist. he was just made to fear everyone and everything - primarily katniss, which then manifested as a fear of himself.

Does the idea of a possessed Will attacking Mike alĂĄ everlark in mockingjay (e.g., at the church) sound appealing?
Yes, consider the angst! The fics!

my two favourite media come together đ
Katniss and Peeta's nightmares reveal a lot about their character. Specifically how they deal with trauma.
Katniss has a very obvious way. She'll hide, run, yell, cry, even get drunk after the reading of the card. Most of these are highlighted in Mockingjay, where before the Victor's return to 13 she was hiding and sleeping in random places, she wasn't really there and everyone knew it. After she learns about Peeta's conditioning she throws herself into danger carelessly, feral with revenge. Which is shown because in her sleep, Katniss screams, thrashes around and cries.
Peeta is not as revealing. We don't know much about how he deals with trauma, but that's because he's so good at hiding he's hurt. He puts up a strong front, distracts himself with busy work to prevent himself from thinking about it. He's more isolated and he pretends everything is alright, he doesn't burden people with his own problems. Which is mirrored when he doesn't react at all while sleeping, paralyzed with fear, and even when he wakes up, he doesn't wake Katniss. He says that it's because his worse nightmares are about losing Katniss and he's alright when he wakes up and she's her, but judging by what he's seen in his life I highly doubt it.
Do you think Peeta could keep living if Katniss died?
yes, he'd take it day by day until he could live again.
no, it would be too devastating for him.
I think that he would handle it better than Katniss would if he died first. He wouldn't kill himself, but he'd be depressed for life, always thinking about her. He would try to distract himself with work when he could, but in the end it wouldn't work very well and while he would seem okay on the outside he would be hurt inside. Also, I think his flashbacks would increase substantially after her death, if he still had them all these years later (yes, I know what is said in Mockingjay, but hopefully we are talking about decades in the future while that is mentioned before the epilogue).
Katniss would kill herself. Just that. The moment she learnt that Peeta was dead she'd drink herself to death(worse than Haymitch) or something like that. But we just hope that they'll both die at the same time of old age and peacefully.
True!
rip lucy gray you would've loved chappell roan đ€đđ
WAIT WAIT WAIT itâs so crazy too crazy too fucking insane that Peeta Mellark was only ELEVEN when he gave Katniss the BREAD !???!? HE WAS A BABY !?!?!?
Okay, and another detail I feel like we often forget about this scene: Katniss was starving because she couldnât qualify for the super FUCKED tesserae since that begins when a child is TWELVE, which allows them to put their name in for the reaping multiple times to qualify for a meager fraction of grain. Peeta, in giving Katniss the bread, showed not only an act of great kindness, but an act that was defiant in the face of poverty and a systemic effort to kill the extreme poor of district 12. Compassion and kindness, in the face of a corrupt and violent system, IS defiance. May we never forget baby Peetaâs act đ
in regards to the whole last name thing, I've always thought Katniss takes Peeta's not only because she probably sees that as 'what you do when you go to the justice building so whatever' but also to be like 'i'm your family' to Peeta because I think that's like a big trauma spot for him -- having no family whatsoever -- so I think that's like a cute little thing they do. I also picture her jokingly saying that now she can call it her bakery rather than his bakery because she's obviously the most famous Mellark (that's part of the joke, they're obviously both painfully famous).
Also, like, I don't see her ever being like "Oh I actually changed my name so its Mellark now" unless it's a highly specific circumstance. I don't think she cares if someone calls her 'Ms. Everdeen!' by accident. Also, I think she takes great joy in somehow diverting all her annoying reporter mail or fan mail because 'he he Katniss Everdeen doesn't have a mailing address!' until someone figures out they should just mail their shit to Katniss Mellark.
Also Katniss Mellark sounds cool.
