The  philosophy:  Never  be  too  nice,  there  are  few  people  in  this  world  who  deserve  to  know  what  you’re  thinking.

The  youth:  Nobody  taught  Lucinda  this,  per-say.  But,  years  of  experiences  let  her  find  that  path  more  than  easily.  Mother  and  father  were  plenty  loving.  Well,  maybe  a  little  too  loving,  a  little  too  encouraging  because  suddenly  she  didn’t  need  either  of  them  anymore.  It  was  quite  a  shock  that  mummy  and  daddy’s  little  princess  could  turn  around  with  such  wit,  those  clothes,  that  attitude.  Her  father  could  barely  speak  to  her  and  mother  was  just  about  ready  to  give  up.

It  was  hypocritical  really,  she  thought,  by  age  fourteen.  It  was  hypocritical  to  be  told  she  could  deserve  so  much  and  to  always  see  her  way  to  the  end,  and  yet  only  if  she  were  the  little  girl  at  the  apple  of  their  eye.  Being  raised  in  wealth  never  phased  her,  she’d  get  dirty  when  she  needed  and  make  sure  there  was  no  mess  to  prove  her  the  guilty  party.

In  some  ways,  her  parents  were  angry,  in  other  way  -  horrified.  Suddenly,  she  didn’t  need  anyone  or  anything.  Self-sufficiency  was  her  gift.

The  career:  Lucinda  didn’t  mind,  years  of  quidditch  and  jeers  left  her  more  than  thick  skinned.  A  Slytherin  captain  has  more  than  enough  to  deal  with,  and  Lucinda  had  more  of  a  pokerface  than  the  party-girl  persona  portrayed.  One  evening,  she’s  giving  the  eye  and  the  next  she’s  spitting  in  it.

She’d  have  been  damned  if  she  didn’t  graduate  by  having  it  all.  You  know,  the  clothes,  the  hair,  the  grades,  the  praise  and  the  Quidditch  and  House  Cup.  She’d  written  the  quidditch  recruiters  herself  in  the  end,  never  trusting  someone  like  Slughorn  to  receive  her  merits.  Ultimately  deciding  she  was  too  good  for  the  Harpies,  Ballycastle  Bats  would  be  where  it  was  at.

Now:  Lucinda’s  reputation  extended  beyond  party  girl  and  sports  star,  though  these  things  helped.  She  was  a  sweet  talker,  a  harsh  talker,  whatever  she  needed  to  be  to  get  what  she  needed,  wanted.  She’d  grace  the  cover  your  magazines,  give  interviews,  and  seem  nothing  but  perfectly  poised.  She  could  even  be  called  influential,  an  inspiration  to  little  girls  everywhere.  Maybe  that’s  why  the  Order  contacted  her,  and  the  Death  Eaters  too  (some  connections  don’t  just  fade).

The  truth  was  in  order  to  make  a  choice,  Lucinda  flipped  a  coin.  She’d  join  sure,  but  it  was  just  to  ensure  that  on  some  outcome  she’d  win.  It  wasn’t  like  she’d  be  against  betraying  the  Order  in  the  end.  No,  she  just  had  few  qualms  about  taking  them  out  herself  should  she  need.

Facts:

-  Murder  is  not  beyond  her,  as  stated  above  really

-  She  really  has  no  problem  making  any  devil’s  advocate  argument  just  to  cause  problems

-  If  she  cares  about  you,  your  life  is  protected.

-  Lucinda  joined  the  order  on  a  ‘coin  flip’.  Meaning  she  made  the  choice  knowing  either  side  offered  some  level  of  protection.  Maybe  she  doesn’t  agree  with  the  Death  Eaters  but,  the  woman  is  selfish.  She  doesn’t  want  to  be  mistaken  for  a  good  person  in  this  particular  situation  (any  other  cover  yes  she  does).  She’d  give  it  up  for  a  good  enough  reason.

-  She  figures  by  joining  either  side,  she’d  flip  when  needed.  Either  could  potentially  protect  her  career  and  freedoms.

-  She  absolutely  had  a  group  of  cronies  in  Hogwarts,  I  mean  really  like  absolutely.

-  Was  she  ever  betrothed?  Is  she  married  now?  Only  she  and  this  person  actually  know.  --  Again,  I’m  really  open  to  just  experimenting  here  and  seeing  what  we  come  up  with.

-  PROTECTOR.  There  is  at  least  one  person  in  this  world  she  sees  eye  to  eye  with.  That  doesn’t  mean  they  don’t  disagree,  but  Lucinda  is  willing  to  see  their  perspective  if  its  strong  enough.  And  she  will  die  for  this  person  really.

-  Media  Quidditch  Rival  -  this  is  the  dumb  rivalry  that  used  to  get  published  in  the  prophet.  Think  along  the  lines  of  the  wrestling  storylines  from  G.L.O.W.

-  An  Affair  /cheating  -  again  I’m  really  flexible  on  this  one  but  the  title  mainly  gets  it  across.

-  Manipulator  -  Maybe  this  is  one  of  the  former  cronies,  but  this  is  a  very  power  dynamic  relationship.  She  has  the  dominant  personality  and  the  other  individual  pretty  easily  bends  to  her  command  be  it  for  something  super  serious  or  frivolous

 just  smile  &  nod  ,  emma.  smile  &  nod.  as  a  pureblood  woman  ,  she  was  used  to  the  mind  games  and  backhanded  compliments  in  their  society.  it  was  a  surprise  to  find  out  it  would  also  come  in  her  career  ,  though.  she’d  thought  being  a  pro  quidditch  player  would  mean  a  world  of  straight  -  forward  athletes  ,  focussed  on  their  performance  on  the  pitch  instead  of  the  society  ballrooms.  her  new  rivalry  with  lucinda  talkalot  had  proved  the opposite  ,  unfortunately.  she’d  made  the  mistake  of  thinking  everything  was  simply  for  the  press  ⸻  after  all  ,  lucinda  had  been  someone  she  looked  up  to  since  her  hogwarts  days.  but  emma  should  have  known  better.

❝  what  the  fuck  ,  ❞  emma  muttered  under  her  breath  at  the  words  coming  out  of  lucinda’s  mouth  ,  though  she  quickly  transformed  her  face  with  a  sickeningly  saccharine  smile.  too  many  reporters  for  her  to  start  throwing  drinks  ,  though  the  temptation  was  definitely  strong.  ❝  lucinda  ,  darling  ,  how  kind  of  you!  ❞  she  replied  as  the  eyes  in  the  room  turned  to  her  for  a  response.  raising  her  glass  in  toast  ,  she  drowned  about  half  of  the  champagne  to  dull  the  annoyance  building  in  her  head  ⸻  but  two  could  play  this  game.  

 ❝  i  am  just  so  glad  you  feel  this  way!  ❞  with  all  the  eyes  in  the  room  turned  to  them  ,  emma  didn’t  even  have  to  raise  her  voice.  ❝  i  expected  such  jealousy  from  other  league  players  that  have  been  playing  for  years  without  a  captaincy  position  ,  that  someone  as  young  as  me  would  take  reigns  of  a  succesful  team  like  the  magpies.  ❞  she  digged  ,  though  the  doe  eyes  &  smile  on  her  face  would  never  falter.    ❝  it’s  incredibly  refreshing  that  you  are  just  happy  for  me.  ❞

D e l i g h t f u l l y   bitchy,  she  thought  of  the  young  Vanity.  It  practically  almost  fit  in  her  name.  The  best  way  to  be  among  this  crowd.  “I’d  have  it  no  other  way.”  Her  voice  sing  songed.  “After  all,  leaders  wouldn’t  exist  without  the  right  people  supporting  them.”  If  it  was  a  double  entendre,  then  Lucinda  was  glad  of  that.  

Her  choice  of  bad  blood  was  carefully  picked  and  she  didn’t  have  that  towards  this  little  girl  who  wanted  so  desperately  to  be  the  center  of  attention.  Instead  she  grinned  and  let  the  golden  liquid  from  her  cup  slip  down  her  throat.  She  felt  ordained,  prepared  for  Emma  to  be  looking  for  a  fight.  “There  you  need  to  toast  back,  love.  It’s  only  polite.”  She  edified.  

The  papers  had  done  as  she  pleased.  One  of  them  could  play  victim  certainly,  but  that  all  depended  the  next  week’s  worth  of  fan  letters.  “There  you  are...  lift  your  glass.”  Goodness,  she  could  feel  the  twinkle  in  her  own  eye  just  saying  it.

“Your used uniform? Disgusting.” Avery scoffed. “I have no use for your smelly uniform… If I really wanted it, you’d be taking it off for me.” He grinned as he crossed his arms over his chest. Dark eyes scanned the quidditch player’s face before stepping closer. Truthfully, he was delivering his father’s sponsor money for the team. Probably just another act to keep up his family’s wealthy reputation but Avery never questioned his father’s tactics. “I think you’d better fire your security team since I wandered in here so easily.” 

Lucinda  went  silent,  not  from  shock  however.  It  was  a  purposeful  silence.  She  was  never  the  one  to  hum  or  stutter  when  looking  for  her  words.  She  simply  turned  to  the  brown  framed  mirror  behind  her,  pulling  back  the  strands  of  newly  washed,  fragrant  hair.  “Oh,  that’s  right,”  she  smiled,  “I  fired  that  lot  last  week.”  It  was  not  a  complete  fib,  but  the  details  of  what  had  transpired  were  not  really  worth  discussing  with  a  plebeian  intruder.  But  she  turned  back  regardless.  “You  aren’t  particularly  threatening  anyway,  love.  Were  you  looking  for  your  mother  perhaps?”

The shuffle of people made it tough for Edgar to get himself out the door. He wanted to find Piper and get home to Autumn. When he finally got to the hall he took a deep breath, eyes scanning the stragglers, they stopped on someone he avoided at all cost. Edgar didn’t hold grudges – except for Lucinda. She brought out the worst in him. He hated that she’d had that effect on him still after all the years since Hogwarts. He leaned against the wall rolling his eyes toward the top of his head as she spoke. 

You’re fine. Don’t feed into it, Edgar.

He was so exhausted he didn’t have the reserve to deal with her, but he wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of being that kid in the hallways. Or the very young man running into her on the street. No. He was thirty years old. Let it go!

“Your full support,” Edgar said through his clenched jaw. “Please tell me you have somewhere else to go.” What he wouldn’t have given for Piper to come running out. No such luck.

There  it  was,  just  the  little  familiar  twitch  in  him  that  looked  like  the  first  bubblings  of  lava  in  a  volcano.  For  some  reason,  Lucinda  decided  it  was  funnier  to  stay  silent,  funnier  to  watch  him  maybe  get  veiny  while  she  cocked  her  head  in  amusement,  even  a  little  confusion  on  her  brow  as  if  nothing  had  just  been  challenged  moments  before.  He  could  just  suddenly  pop  like  a  balloon,  his  exterior  was  delicate  enough  to  mimic  that  anyway.  

A  big  sigh,  a  look  over  her  own  wand  -  placed  into  her  hands  for  emphasis  on  what  now  seemed  like  a  core  memory.  “If  I  had  somewhere  to  go,”  her  words  dripped  painstakingly  slow,  “Edgar,  love.  Don’t  you  think  I  would  just  already  be  there?  Today  is  my  afternoon  off  and  I  just  desired  to  say  hello.  You  wouldn’t  deny  me  such  a  simple  desire,  would  you?”  Not  like  the  hadn’t  started  this  with  a  gross  parody  of  the  meeting  they  just  came  out  of.  “I  chose  to  be  here  just  as  you  did,  shouldn’t  that  be  enough  for  some  mutual  respect?”

The  question  game,  Lucinda  decided,  she  did  not  like.  “They  asked  me  to  come  to  this,  on  your  little  missions.  Misguided  the  lot  is,  but  the  quidditch  off-season  is  coming,  so  I  suppose  this  little  crusade  is  entertainment  enough.”

Aleyda’s eyes widened and she smiled nervously at the other. “I-I’m so sorry.” She blurted out before tucking her brown hair behind her ear. “To be honest, I don’t know how I got here…” Granted, she had been snooping around out of curiosity but she didn’t want to admit that now. The last thing she needed was to be dragged out of there by security like some criminal. “But I guess I would like an autograph if you don’t mind?” A smile played on her lips. Her father loved quidditch and she knew how excited he would be.

Gratifying,  really  -  it  let  her  turn  on  the  charm  and  resolve  the  threat  for  another  time.  “Really?”  Poke  holes  at  the  story,  see  what  pops  out  its  little  head.  “Well,  the  season  hasn’t  really  started  yet,  and  you  don’t  look  like  a  reporter.”  She  summed  paper  and  quill  from  the  vanity  desk  she  had  insisted  be  put  in  the  room.  Her  signature  had  been  the  same  since  Hogwarts,  just  her  very  own  hand  in  an  authentic  gesture.  “Peeping  is  only  a  crime  six  days  a  week,  love.”

“Would  this  be  for  you?”  She  fluttered  the  blank  parchment.

“The  next  time  you  plan  to  come  over  here  unannounced,  I  will  find  out  and  turn  off  my  floo  connection  while  your  body  is  halfway  through  the  fireplace.”  Lucinda  called  the  words  over  her  shoulder,  fairly  certain  of  who  decided  to  pop  in  with  green  flame.  Most  would  send  an  owl,  or  just  toss  in  a  head  to  make  themselves  known  first.  She  knew  well  enough  Evan  was  not  going  to  do  such  a  courtesy.  Despite  the  early  hours,  she  was  already  dressed;  despite  this  being  her  off-day  from  practice,  she  was  dressed  to  the  nines  as  a  great  lady  can  always  expect  an  interview.  “Clearly  your  mother  didn’t  care  enough  to  teach  you  manners,  or  you  were  always  too  daft  growing  up  to  pay  attention.”  Finally,  she  let  herself  turn  to  face  him,  holding  morning  tea  to  her  lips  with  calm  voice,   condescendingly  delicate.  “There’s  ash  on  your  forehead.”

“Excuse  me,  shop  girl.”  A  little  higher  pitched,  demanding  and  shrill.  But  as  she  leaned  onto  the  counter,  a  rather  charming  grin  emerged.  “Oh  don’t  give  me  that  look,  love.  I’ve  known  you  since  you  were  a  shop  baby.”  Lucinda  didn’t  particularly  love  Borgin  and  Burkes,  but  she  saw  the  advantages  of  the  shop.  “Is  it  ready  yet?”  The  truth  was  she  was  anxious  for  the  thing,  the  jinxed  rug  she  intended  to  leave  on  the  inside  of  her  home’s  entrance  in  the  evenings.  Certainly,  her  own  skills  sufficed  in  protection,  but  the  extra  layers  were  a  warm  though.  Perhaps  she  may  even  leave  it  out  for  an  undesirable  visit  from  an  ex.  But  it’s  main  purpose  meant  it  needed  to  be  solid.  “And it  needs  to  blend  with  the  room. I  can’t  take  it  if  the  color  was  affected  by  the  enchantment.”

“So  you’ve  caught  me,  but  don’t  mind  my  snooping,  love.”  Something  about  the  dramatics  pulled  Lucinda’s  hands  into  the  air,  wand  well  concealed  away  from  the  visitor  but  no  so  far  that  she  couldn’t  reach  it  at  a  moment’s  notice.  “To  be  fair,  this  is  my  locker  room  and  I  don’t  usually  take  to  visitors  before  my  post-practice  shower.”  Eyes  scanned,  assessing  very  little  threat  but  enjoying  the  volume  of  her  own  voice.  “My  security  team  is  right  outside  that  door,  an  autograph  is  fine  with  me,  but  if  its  my  used  uniform  you’re  after  then  the  gift  shop  has  a  replica.”

Where: The end of an Order meeting with Edgar Bones @xedgarbonesx​

When  Lucinda  agreed  to  this,  she  had  assumed  it  would  be bi-monthly  at  most.  But  meeting  after  meeting,  and  call  after  call,  she  was  quite  ready  to  blow  it  all  off.  Especially  after  the  disaster  they’d  sent  her  on  with  a  child.  Worse  enough  the  Prophet’s  weekend  edition  writers  could  have  seen  her,  but  she  still  had  to  report  to  quidditch  team  practice  that  evening.  As  the  speaker  concluded,  Lucinda  scoffed.  Gladly  out  of  her  chair,  she  took  to  the  hallway  where  she  momentarily  pondered  exposing  their  ridiculous  excuse  for  a  safe  house.  But  that  voice  -  so  kind  and  caring,  so  easily  riled,  it  brought  back  warm  memories  nearly  twelve  years  old.  “Your  full  support.”  She  mimicked  Edgar  once  the  rest  of  the  initiative  had  cleared  out  of  the  room.  “You  could  bring  tea  and  biscuits  next  time.”

Sometimes  these  rooms  just  glittered.  And  there  Lucinda  felt  quite  at  home,  not  that  she  ever  felt  uncomfortable  or  out  of  place  anywhere.  No  in  fact,  she  quite  glittered  along  with  the  room;  now  if  only  everyone  else  would  notice  that  for  a  few  minutes  Lucinda  would  have  a  very  pleasant  night.  It  was  in  the  corner  of  her  eye  she  saw  another  dark  haired  figure,  slight  and  petite  but  as  slick  as  Lucinda  herself.  Slender  fingers  tightened  to  the  stem  of  her  glass,  feeling  like  a  lengthening  of  her  own  spine  with  raised  brow.  No,  that  wasn’t  the  right  expression  for  this.  To  match  the  glittering  of  the  room  and  her  dress,  Lucinda  turned  to  charm  -  a  sparkle  in  her  own  eye.  “Everyone,  everyone.”  Dainty,  sweet,  commanding  slips  of  words,  no  need  to  amplify  her  voice  with  her  wand.  

Her  words  printed  to  that  paper  were  exactly  as  they  had  been  when  she  spoke  them  to  the  wide-eared  reporter.  Oh,  but  how  Lucinda  knew  they’d  still  look  twisted  from  their  context.  Perhaps  that’s  even  why  she’d  said  her  ‘rival’  was  an  example  of  unmerited  benefit  of  youth  and  beauty  in  this  industry.  

“I’d  really  like  to  make  a  toast,  to  my  darling  Emma  Vanity.  A  newly  elected  captain,  and  queen,  of  the  Montrose  Magpies.”  An  elegant  arm  raised  a  glass.  

She  wasn’t  afraid  of  seeming  jealous,  she  wasn’t  afraid  of  seeming  like  someone  younger  was  stealing  her  spotlight.  Look  at  her  right  now  in  the  gleam  of  the  room.  How  could  anyone  interpret  her  as  anything  other  than  a  beacon?  Another  lovely  tale  for  the  gossip  reporters  of  the  Prophet  for  the  weekend  edition.  

“From  your  first  days  at  Hogwarts,  my  alma  mater.  I  saw  your  talent  and  said  that  young  woman  was  going  places.  Needless  to  say  I’m  always  right.  Here’s  to  your  successes, love.”

Sitting in the grass, tea in hand, Alice clicked her tongue against the top of her mouth, “Echo! get back here, silly boy!” She laughed watching her beloved cat hopping in the flowers outside her flat. Watching him play always brought her joy. He jumped around, popping up and down through some brush. This was always the best part of her day; a few minutes in the fresh air with her faithful companion and a familiar cup of tea. Nothing could be more perfect.

It wasn’t out of the ordinary to see her in pajamas during this routine part of her day. She was snuggled in sweatpants and baggy shirt, not caring what anyone thought. Alice was in her peaceful element. But she was so focused on the moment that she jumped when she heard, “Alice!” coming quickly behind her. 

“What the –” came out before seeing who was coming toward her.

Lucinda  didn’t  take  to  early  mornings,  but  it  would  never  show.  Her  voice  commanded  even  in  the  earliest  light.  Agreeing  to  do  things  this  way,  was  her  act  of  kindness  for  the  year.  If  it  were  up  to  her,  she’d  have  already  been  inside  Gringotts  with  the  key  shoved  into  the  vault.  Precious  cargo  couldn’t  be  that  precious  is  this  is  who  she  was  meant  to  be  travelling  with,  and  that  a  dog  on  top  of  is.  

“Alice.”  She  called  again,  voice  neutral  since  it  was  too  early  to  let  out  the  ice  or  fire.  “Did  you  expect  us  to  have  a  portkey  set  up  for  your...friend.”  She’d  rather  not  touch  the  furry  thing,  even  for  a  moment  of  apparition.  “Or  is  he  standing  guard  because  the  gobling  are  just  too  much  for  you  to  handle?”
