❝ so, to what do i owe this lovely surprise ? where are you guys headed ? ❞ she leant down to take her daughter’s free hand, swinging it gently . her own errands for the day were finished - she may as well tag along on the adventures of her two favorite people, even though she had been quite looking forward to getting home .

“You don’t know smooth.” Edgar took Piper’s hand -- holding both his favorite girls’ hands -- and pulled her toward him. “It may be bold, but I think a kiss is in order.” He gave her the sweetest kiss then rubbed his thumb on her cheek. Years later and Piper still made him blush. No one had ever had the hold on him than the brunette he was lucky enough to call his wife. His small family was something he had always wanted and treated everyday like it was the first.

Edgar squatted to be eye to eye with Autumn. “Were we going somewhere, sweetheart?” he asked and poked her in the nose making her giggle. “I want ice cream! Please Mama?” Autumn yelled in Piper’s direction. Edgar looked up at Piper. “Well, what do you think, Mama?” he stood. “We could be that sickening couple to share a milkshake with two straws.”

“Please mama!” Autumn chimed in jumping up and down. Edgar looked at Piper, curled his lips in. “Please Miss Bones?”

" WILL YOU STOP FUSSING? “ the blonde mumbled as she elbowed her cousin lightly, ocean colored eyes focused on the corridor in front of them, digging into her robes rory pulled her wand out. so what if there had been a ‘ keep out ‘ sign on that door she’d basically shoved edgar through? such warnings, in her opinion were simply ‘ friendly suggestions ‘ nothing to take too seriously ⸺ at least she wouldn’t. “ it’s just a little looksie.. “ she whispered again, as she turned to look at the eldest of the two a grin on her features, before she snorted. “ b’sides haven’t you ever heard… ‘ the best places are the places you aren’t supposed to be in? ‘ “ or was it … ‘ the best parties were the ones you aren’t invited to? ‘ oh potato.. tomato… however that went. she’d worry about it later.

she walked a few steps in front of her cousin, ruffling her messy locks as a few stray curls came about to cover her face… up until she let out a high pitched scream as she turned to face him, and she threw her crumpled cloak in his direction, before she erupted into a fit of giggles.. ‘ lumos ‘ she finally whispered allowing the light to fill the now obviously small room.. it was a closet, under climatic perhaps.. but if she was going to be forced to engage in family time then she may as well have fun with it. “ now tell me… “ her voice trailed after the heart attack she’d just caused. “ how much have you MISSED me? “ she questioned with a wiggle of her nose. “ life’s been a bore without i bet… huh? “

“Fussing? Who’s fussing?” Edgar asked, pulling the collar of his shirt away from his neck. “I’m just itchy. You know I have dry skin.” Lorraine had a way of being exciting but also immature. -- she reminded him of himself at her age. Even at thirty, Edgar would be known to do things others may think stupid but what’s stupid without a little adventure? The best way to learn is through adventure. The best way to have fun was through adventure. But he didn’t want anything to happen to the cousin he’d grown to love and care for as a little sister. Merlin knew he and Amelia had dropped a bombshell on Lorraine when they moved into her home after the twin’s parent’s deaths. Edgar wouldn’t deny her thrills. In fact, he would rather join her to keep her safe -- not that the witch needed it, but when it came to family Edgar knew what was best.

Edgar was never going to lie about anything he had ever done or been involved with. The man went out looking for magical creatures -- fear? Most people think he’s crazy for what he does but it’s the thrill. It’s the same thrill he saw looking in Lorraine’s eyes. He couldn’t take that away from her and smirked, shaking his head. “Maybe it’s the best parties are the place you shouldn’t be.”

Edgar allowed her to guide him but when she screeched and tossed her cloak, he pulled out his wand in a split second. “What the -- Rory?” He shoved her with his breath a bit labored, “don’t do that to me!” He looked around the so-called room. “Oh, c’mon, Rory. You call this a fun looksie? You’ve got a lot to learn,” Edgar laughed, tousling her already messy hair. “Of course I’ve missed you, but you need to redefine fun.”

It was wonderful to have a friend with children around the same age as his little four year old angel, Autumn. She needed kids to play with and he needed another parent to spend time with while the kids explored, laughed and got into mischief. Edgar’s parents may have died but at least he had Amelia and Rory to be with. Autumn didn’t have any siblings ( yet ) but the Weasley family was a blessing and always would be.

Edgar held the little hand as they walked up to the front door. “Do you want to knock, missy?” Autumn hopped and knocked as loudly as she could. “Can I try too?” he asked her, but before he got the chance, the door opened. “Look at that, bean! You got the door to open all on your own!” Edgar smiled at the little girl he loved so much. “Hey Molly. You and the kids up for a play date? Autumn could sure use it.” He mouthed, so could I.

AMBROSE WASN’T OFFICIALLY A STUDENT — he audited a few classes each semester, attended even fewer on a regular basis and generally spent more time talking with the professors than the students. “edgar bones, just the man i was hoping to find. my colleague sent over a copy of a book that i helped translate but i think you’ll probably find more interest in it than i would.” he pulled the tome out of his bag, still wrapped in a silvery wrapping paper and red ribbon. “it’s about the hidebehind population in america, they had been doing some questionable experiments with the things back in the day.”

Ambrose looked familiar so when he approached Edgar he smiled, “The man you were looking for?” he adjusted his sweater as he would assume someone of importance would, “can’t say I’m not surprised,” he said with a wink. Once Ambrose mentioned having something he’d find it interesting, Edgar leaned in closely with curiosity in his eyes.

A book! Edgar wanted to snatch it from the other’s hands but held his composure — or tried to anyway. He listened to each word that came out of Ambrose’s mouth impressed while staring at the silver wrapping and ribbon. It was like a Christmas in July. Immediately his eyes darted to Ambrose’s when the word hidebehind came out. Sadness brimmed across his face with the following words questionable experiments.

Shaking his head, Edgar admitted “They are a rough sort but experiments —“ sadness turned to anger then turned to compassion. “Thank you so much for this. The best way to combat these sorts of things is to learn what people think they can get away with.”

Edgar furrowed his brow, “May I?” he asked hoping to get the book in his hands.

lorcan slid into edgar’s office towards the end of his office hours, throwing himself into a chair in front of the professor’s desk. “professor — well i suppose i’m not your student — bones, i have a question for you. inquiring minds and all of that.” he leaned forward in his chair, glancing around before whispering, “where do you, and yours, stand on the debate about whether the undead should be classified as beings? my family and i are trying to decide on a side in another conflict and this information could prove helpful.”

Scrolls cluttered Edgar’s desk. Organized chaos, he’d say. Quill in hand, he looked up when an unfamiliar face sat before him. Placing the quill down and looking up with a smile, Edgar reassured the young man he had no reason to call him professor. “It’s always a little strange when anyone calls me professor let alone someone not in my classes,” Edgar smiled and reached out his hand speaking over Lorcan, “Edgar Bo--” he stopped in his tracks. Retracting his arm, Edgar leaned back in his raggedy chair. “I --” his eyebrows furrowed. Edgar wasn’t one to stop a conversation but he had the slight thought that this may not be one to get into. “I would have to say I need more information.” He paused. “And a physical examination could tell us even more.”

When Lucinda agreed to this, she had assumed it would be bi-monthly at most. But meeting after meeting, and call after call, she was quite ready to blow it all off. Especially after the disaster they’d sent her on with a child. Worse enough the Prophet’s weekend edition writers could have seen her, but she still had to report to quidditch team practice that evening. As the speaker concluded, Lucinda scoffed. Gladly out of her chair, she took to the hallway where she momentarily pondered exposing their ridiculous excuse for a safe house. But that voice - so kind and caring, so easily riled, it brought back warm memories nearly twelve years old. “Your full support.” She mimicked Edgar once the rest of the initiative had cleared out of the room. “You could bring tea and biscuits next time.”

The shuffle of people made it tough for Edgar to get himself out the door. He wanted to find Piper and get home to Autumn. When he finally got to the hall he took a deep breath, eyes scanning the stragglers, they stopped on someone he avoided at all cost. Edgar didn’t hold grudges -- except for Lucinda. She brought out the worst in him. He hated that she’d had that effect on him still after all the years since Hogwarts. He leaned against the wall rolling his eyes toward the top of his head as she spoke.

You’re fine. Don’t feed into it, Edgar.

He was so exhausted he didn’t have the reserve to deal with her, but he wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of being that kid in the hallways. Or the very young man running into her on the street. No. He was thirty years old. Let it go!

“Your full support,” Edgar said through his clenched jaw. “Please tell me you have somewhere else to go.” What he wouldn’t have given for Piper to come running out. No such luck.

Edgar was a somewhat familiar face to Caradoc — he had taken a class or two with the professor, though not enough that he expected to be recognized — but aside from being a familiar face he was also someone who he deeply respected. Oh god, would the earth just open up and swallow him already? “No — I mean — I — uh — I know about puffskeins and I could definitely take care of him but you know I already have 3 and my roommates might be mad at this point if I bring home another pet.” That would bring the total up to ten, though his roommates only knew about four or five of them — that he knew of.

“And that just feels irresponsible, you know. As much as I want to just care for every single animal in the world — I, well I can’t.” That stung sometimes, that there was no way that he would ever be able to save every single animal that needed it but it had been an important lesson nonetheless.

Edgar looked at Caradoc with curiosity in his eyes. “Why are you so nervous? Puffskeins are nothing to be scared of. No creature is, including me and you.” Edgar laughed at that statement and placed his hand on the boy’s shoulder. “We’re all creatures, right?” It was the truth.

Hoping he’d put Caradoc at some sort of ease, he listened to the concerns being listed. They were valid concerns, absolutely. But there was always a way around things if they’re thought out enough. But he listened, nodded his head. Situations like this were difficult because he brimmed with excitement wanting to say, “No! Take it home! You don’t have anything to worry about!” but his professor side wanted him to take everything into consideration and what was best for the little one cradled in his arms. Finding the middle ground was something Edgar tried to do but wasn’t always successful.

“Everything you’re saying makes perfect sense,” he said with a soothing voice. “ When he love creatures so much it can be difficult to decide what’s best for them.” Edgar knew that struggle all too well, but he also knew that, no matter the cost, he would pick the take it home route. “But,” here it came. “I’m sure there’s something we could figure out together. Obviously you truly care so there must be some way to address the concerns and give him a home with you in the most respectful way possible.” His excitement and anticipation filled him up. A younger person with fantastic ideals -- “Do I -- you look familiar. Have we met?” asked the (sometimes) absentminded Edgar.

HANDS WAVE ENTHUSIASTICALLY AROUND HER FRAME , eyes alight with some curiosity . ❝ so you’re saying that i’m supposed to crush the eye before adding it ? ❞ everything about that notion grossed her out , but at the same time was nothing like what the instructions were telling her . ❝ you’re not pulling my leg right ? ❞

It didn’t appear to be well known but when dealing with magical creatures, there was a need to know about making potions. Not your run of the mill potions taught at Hogwarts, but potions nonetheless. They were part of his lessons at Tauxmarts. Edgar was quite adept seeing as how these are what help his beloved fascination. Though it could be tough.

“I wish I was pulling your leg. I hate to think of using parts of creatures,” Edgar sighed, “but if they are no longer with us, I feel they would want us to do what we had to in order to keep all the others doing well.” It was true. It was his least favorite part of his dream world. “Getting involved in these potions isn’t pretty. It’s hard. But it’s necessary.”

Edgar gave Pandora a small smile and got into professor mode. “C’mon. Let’s give it a go,” he said, passing the metal plate her way. “Look around you. What do you think would be best to use to crush the eye to get the most out of it?”

“Definitely a man after your own heart!” Edgar exclaimed. Everything excited him but getting a free breakfast when it was more than a requirement made it that much better. And Bilius’ reaction was so lovely. It was something he needed to help with the pick me up. Good food, good company. What more could someone ask for?

Edgar sat there for a moment, thoughts of food running through his head. Merlin, he loved a good meal. “Oh, Piper came by?!” More joy. “Of course her jam is going to be on my large plate,” he said, his hand hovering over the bar to show just how big a breakfast he wanted.

“I must tell you, a scone and jam isn’t going to be all I need. I don’t think you know what you’ve gotten yourself into!” He laughed but his words were honest. “How about some eggs, very crispy bacon, blood sausage if you have any. Oh. And that scone with jam! Piper would smack me if I didn’t have some of her jam,” Edgar paused. “Actually, just pour jam on top of the whole plate!”

THERE ARE FEW OCCASIONS so delightful as serendipitously encountering your husband on a day when you hadn’t planned to meet him . so thinks piper bones, at least . her day of deliveries is coming to a close; she’s only planning to grab lunch before heading home to relieve her dad of his babysitting post when she spots a very familiar silhouette down the alley and her face alights into a grin .

she quietly approaches, waiting until she’s directly behind him to make her presence known by asking, ❝ say, do you come here often ? ❞

There had been an emergency that Edgar had to attend to. He had been home with Autumn but made the decision to bring her with him. He didn’t want her to see a creature so beautiful being in pain but he also wanted her to see they could be helped. Edgar had no intention of forcing his daughter to become a magizoologist or professor like him, but he did want her to appreciate the creatures that were part of their world.

Once finished, they were walking, her tiny hand in his. He was talking her little four year old ear off when he heard the familiar voice of his beloved wife. Edgar stopped in his tracks with an enormous smile. Every moment with Piper was a great moment. And he loved her humor. Only one reason he had married her.

Edgar slowly turned around, beaming. “I don’t come here often. I’d remember your face if I did.”

“I am never lost, my friend!” Edgar pronounced with a smile on his face. Antonin could be intimidating but if anyone was going to approach him with a sunny disposition, it would be Edgar. “Why shouldn’t I be here? Looks like an okay place to be. Everywhere is a good place to be, wouldn’t you think? New adventures around every corner!” New adventures gave Edgar an upper hand in many situations. He didn’t have much fear. He knew that who he was was alright so why fight it?

He leaned in with a hushed yet excited tone, “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you how I got in. See, there’s this little thing called magic.”
