[FULL] Interview of Luhan on Ming Weekly

Box Office Results of “Back to 20” breaks the 1.3 billion mark, Luhan watched his first movie shyly.

After the dramatic period of Luhan filing a lawsuit against SM Entertainment, Chinese Idol Luhan left the Korean group EXO and went solo. But his popularity did not drop because of that, instead, he became someone that every company is putting attention on, and his acting invitations are countless. His first movie “Back to 20” received RMB100,000,000 within 4 days, the entry ticket of the Taiwan Premiere Conference also sold out in seconds. He gave himself a 60 marks for his performance in his first movie, while Yang Zi Shan and Chen Bo Lin gave him the full marks-100 marks. No matter what marks he gets, he is still the most adorable Male God in his fans’ hearts.

The 24 years old Luhan was scouted by a talent agent when he was in high-school, he went to Korea for training, and debuted as a member of EXO. Because of his harmless and adorable appearance, he became one of the most popular members. Last October, he filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment, using his health problems and his parents as his reasons, causing a scene. Many people were worried that his career might affected. In the beginning of the year, he released his first production “Back to 20” after becoming solo. It was estimated that they could only recover their expenses for the movie if the ticket sales exceeds RMB120million (around TWD620million), unexpectedly, just within 2 weeks, they have already passed the RMB250million mark (around TWD1.3billion), proving that he is still succeeding well in both singing and acting, 30-40 films are waiting for his approval.

"Using his talent to memorise the guitar chords"

First time acting in a movie, Luhan confessed that he was very nervous, his body would turn cold, his palms would sweat, but when he is in front of the camera, he still shines as usual. Chen Bo Lin also complimented on his acting, "He is much better compared to me when I acted for the first time, maybe because he had stage experiences previously, and also had professional training, he is talented and also earnest." Yang Zi Shan said jokingly, "I should learn from him. He is very smart, he remembers many things that the director teachers him, I probably need to learn how to do aegyo from him." His sunbaes kept on praising him, Luhan quickly begged for their mercy while blushing.

Actually, Luhan was born to be an artist, he acted as a passionate teenager with a dream of becoming a rock star, scenes with him playing the guitar is a must, from not knowing how to play guitar to learning the guitar chords for the whole song, he would only take 40 minutes to do so. He stated modestly: "When I was young I went for one lesson, but it was too painful for my hands, so I gave up. This time I had to memorise the chords because it was required by the movie." Yang Zi Shan praised him and said: “He can really play it out loud, he can sing while playing the guitar.”

After all he is a singer, sometimes Luhan would get too into playing the guitar that he forgot he was supposed to act. When the director says ‘action’, he would lower his hand and focus on playing the guitar. Chen Bo Lin also had to remind him to put some attention on his face expressions during filming and exhibit his charisma during the right time, or not he would have this habit of always staring at the camera, when he acts he would always search where the focus of the camera is, resulting to NGs. He laughed and said: “As singers, when we film MVs, we have to act cool and sometimes smile, we must look at the camera. When I’m acting, I am not supposed to look at the camera but I still have the habit of searching for the cameras, haha.”

"Doing aegyo to Yang Zi Shan to get 90 marks"

That working habit is not the only thing that Luhan couldn’t change, he still pays a great deal of attention to the concept of seniority because he went for training in Korea for a long period of time. There was a scene where he and Yang Zi Shan had to drink alcohol, he drank it in a way as if he was in Korea, he naturally turn his head to the side and drank it in order to show respect. Of course, the scene had to be refilmed, Yang Zi Shan comforted Luhan and said: "It’s alright, you’re now in China, turn your head back and drink, Granny is here to protect you (She acted as Luhan’s granny who turned young in Back to 20!)." The drinking scene where they sat in the BBQ Restaurant and Luhan had to tease Yang Zi Shan, to make Luhan feel more relaxed, at the end, the director wanted him to drink real beer, and use the alcohol to boost his courage in order to let him get into the movie easier, "But after drinking, he started to forget his lines, haha."

When we talked about his acting experience, he stated that everything was fresh for him, just like how he had to put in emotions even when dubbing the film, it took some time for him to get used to it. "Sometimes I have to dub the laughing voices, I feel that my laugh is very dry/fake." He even revealed that he was really worried when he watched himself on the cinema screen, “When the other actors appeared, I watched very comfortably, but when I appeared, I started to freak out, I’ll somehow get nervous and critical, I just don’t want to look at myself.” Even his parents didn’t watch his movie. "They are quite cool, they want to watch it at home when the official DVD is out, they don’t want to reveal themselves to the public."

After the movie is screened, the box office results continued to rise, the movie critics have also made unbiased positive reviews about Luhan’s acting. When he was asked to rate himself, he first said 6 marks, Yang Zi Shan and Chen Bo Lin got a shock and asked him "What’s the full mark for that?", only then he realised what was happening and said "60 marks, I thought the full mark was 10." The interesting part is- when it was Yang Zi Shan’s turn to rate his acting, he nervously went next to her ears and whispered "90 marks, 90 marks." Yang Zi Shan laughed and said: "The director gave him 100 marks because being able to have such an effective acting was considered difficult for someone acting for the first time. This 100 mark is also given to encourage him to continue his acting career properly, I agree with what our director said."

"He refuses to lip sync even if his voice cracks"

Other than acting, Luhan also sang the movie’s OST “Our Tomorrow”, in the past when he was still in EXO, all of them were given a number of lines. This was considered his first complete solo song, he stated "Being able to record the full song for the first time, anyone would feel excited, because suddenly, because the number of singing lines have increased. And one more thing, last time, everyone would sing one after the another, the emotions might not be there, this time I had to sing with emotions from the beginning till the end, it was quite difficult."

This time, he came to Taiwan for his movie promotions, he feels that there is a big difference compared to when he came here with EXO members for the concert. When we asked him whether he feels lonely without other peoples’ accompany, he paused for a while and said, although he left Korea, he still remembers Korean, he would occasionally watch Korean dramas, listen to Korean music. "(My) mood will definitely not be that great, but how do I say it? Fans are still as enthusiastic as before, so I feel relieved/steady."

When he was filming for “Back to 20”, Luhan hadn’t filed a lawsuit against SM, now, he’s on his own. Yang Zi Shan witnessed his growth, she said sincerely, "I have some mother-like love for Luhan, maybe it’s because he acted as my grandson in the movie. I remember when we were filming, all the staffs were still Korean, I was like aww that’s so pitiful, it must be difficult for him to be alone overseas. Now seeing that he has return, becoming better, and he always says that he got chubbier, I feel very happy." She also said that everyone finds Luhan very adorable, but when you get close to him, he is a strong-minded, persistent and thoughtful person. "Sometimes his throat would feel uncomfortable, but then we would need to film the singing scene, so I told him that he could lip sync, but he said no, he wants to sing for real, he said that he would insist on singing even if his voice cracks."

"Rebuked crazy sasaeng fans who followed his car"

Luhan doesn’t really like to be called adorable, he is actually manly, he likes to play football, watch anime, he also imitates the funny videos trending on the Internet, "I am a manly man, I’m quite humorous in private." He exhibited his manliness when he was protecting his family. Fans followed him every day during the filming period, there was once when the fans’ cars were too close to the car he was in and almost led to danger, he couldn’t hold himself in, he got out of the car and spoke to them. "At the time my parents came over, we wanted to get a meal, so I told her ‘You can stop following now/ Please stop following’ and she replied ‘who said I am following you?’. I said ‘Don’t film me’. She replied ‘Who said I’m filming you?’, then I wanted to film her, she said ‘Don’t film me, I have portrait right’ , I didn’t want to care about it, so I just left."

With Luhan’s presence, fans remain crazy every moment, no matter it is the hotel lobby or underground parking, fans wait for him 24/7. Some fans even bought the staff pass for RMB20,000 (Around TWD10,0000) to enter the press conference that he was in. Some crazy fans who went overboard would even call his house's phone number, "My parents would occasionally pick up the calls, and they will be asked: ‘Are you Luhan’s parents?’" Luhan feels bad for their parents, he said helplessly, "When I first debuted I asked my parents: ‘Do you want to come over and watch my showcase performance?’, they said ‘it’s alright, we’ll just look at pictures’. I was really stressed when I was about to debut, I called them and told them about my hardships, they just said ‘well who told you to become a singer in the first place?’". He emphasized that his parents are very low-profiled, he doesn’t hope that their lives will be disturbed/affected because of him.

Luhan said that his parents respected his decision of becoming an artist, they told him that he shouldn’t regret the decision he makes, because of that, in the beginning of 2013, when he gave his parents the first salary he had received, the satisfaction he felt was simply indescribable. This year’s Chinese New Year, he specially did not accept any schedules, because after he debuted in Korea, it has been 6 and a half years since he has returned to his hometown, he lived outside since high-school. Now he finally has the opportunity to return home, of course he would want to unite with his family and give red packets to the elders to show love and respect. He now knows how to treasure everything even more, especially after he filmed “Back to 20” - where the granny became young  and lived her youth once again, a production which emphasized on the family relationships. "I know that I need to spend  more time with my parents within this limited time, I’m too shy to say out  these 3 words ‘I love you’, but we do hug each other."

Luhan - ELLE Interview (WeChat)

Who is Luhan? I know, the moment I read out his name, thousands and thousands of hearts are already getting excited. And to those who are still asking that question, after reading the ELLE cover story of this issue, perhaps you would understand why this boy makes people feel this way. We spent time with Luhan for two full days at home, do you know that?

The photo shoot for the cover of ELLE this week is a little special. In the past, the tables in the photo shoot venue are usually filled with blinding jewelleries, but this time, surprisingly there was a row of socks, there was a bed, pillows, sofa, wooden dinner table, toaster, louvers, and a dog. To help fulfil the ELLE readers’ wishes- to spend a day with Luhan at home, we provided the most ordinary day of Luhan’s life in a photo shoot studio located in the suburbs of Beijing.

Buying Eggrolls From The Street Stalls With No Pressure

 Early in the morning, when there’s not enough time to get breakfast, Luhan arrived at the filming site. Looking at the staffs who were still making preparations for the photoshoot, he asked us carefully: “Can I go out and get some food? I saw a few breakfast food stalls when I passed the entrance.” This question gave us a shock- in a bright day, Luhan personally going to the side of the street to get breakfast- is that really alright? The staffs beside him seemed pretty calm, “No problem!” Five minutes later, Luhan who wore a cap brought hot eggrolls back on his hands. We were relieved.

"Give Me 15 Minutes!"

During the photoshoot, the photographer Liu Song suggested Xiao Lu to unbutton his shirt a little to give more effect. Xiao Lu lowered his head and thought for a while and slightly blushed. He then looked up and asked: “Can you give me 15 minutes?”. After getting the permission, Xiao Lu went to the dressing room cheerfully and closed the door…..15 minutes later, Xiao Lu appeared in front of the cameras once again, with a few droplets of sweat shining on his forehead. This time, he unbuttoned his shirt, and he looked more relaxed. “I rested for too long and didn’t work out much, I went to do some just now.” He later explained what he did in the dressing room for 15minutes.

An Iced Americano During Winter

It was winter in Beijing, surrounded by cold wind. The heaters in the photoshoot studio weren’t doing what they were supposed to do, all the staffs would need a cup of hot beverage to warm their bodies. When Luhan was asked what he wants to drink…”Iced Americano, large”. During these two days of photoshoot, we asked him four times, he always gave out the same response. Listening to that response, even the youngest staff in the photoshoot team- 90 Liner Gabrielle started to admire Xiao Lu’s strong body.

Football, Ah, Football

"What do you usually like to play?"

"Football."

"What do you do when you’re alone at home?"

"Watch football matches."

"What was your dream when you were young?"

"To become a football player."

"Love is like….."

"Football."

Secretly Unplugging the Speaker Cables

In these two days of shooting, the music in the photoshoot studio has never stopped. To help Xiao Lu find the feeling during the photoshoot, the photographer and a few editors tried to connect their phones to the speakers and tried to find the beats that a 90 liner likes- Those beats, are they considered as western style, crazy, or something that cannot be understood?

When we were having lunch, we suddenly realised that the style of music had a big change- in details, it didn’t only change from Western style to China style, it was one of the retro songs….

"Whose phone is this?", someone asked.

After 10+ seconds, Xiao Lu got up from his seat and walked to the speakers, he looked around silently, laughed shyly and pressed the volume button “+”.

Is Xiao Lu fashionable enough?

Luhan has potential in being fashionable, his body proportion is also quite good. He had his very own unique effect when he wore the London, Paris outfits for the new season. He is very natural in front of the camera because he doesn’t take photoshoots too often. So, in the magazine, everyone will see Luhan wrapping in blankets , the real him, one and only. He is born to be in front of cameras. On the second day of shooting, we filmed a short film named “One Day with A Dreamer”, you can watch it on ELLEplus. He looks good in all angles, every moment, he shines like a star. Because of that, the filming was able to end quickly and successfully. Luhan - ELLE Interview

Luhan, when you read out his name, you will never know how many people's hearts are beating fast for him. If you ask him how he feels being supported and loved by thousands and thousands of fans, he won't know how to answer you too.

His shyness and quietness makes it seems like it is his first day being an artist, he remains unmoved by honour or disgrace, as if the story of his life was already written beforehand.

When he was 18, he was scouted by the talent agent on the streets of Seoul. When he was 20, he stepped into the magnificent and busy entertainment world. When he was 22, he become the lead dancer, singer and the visual of a popular group. When he was 24, he was determined to cut off all the links with his past, return to his home in Beijing, and begin anew. 

It was difficult for him to explain everything clearly, not only to people like us who he has just met, even to his close friends. His friends who have been hanging out with him since middle-school talked about him studying overseas in Korea, joining the entertainment industry etc, but they had no idea about the hardships he went through. We could only predict how he was able to become the Luhan of today.

On a cold day in Beijing, we called Luhan out. After two days of observations and interactions, he is honest, generous, warm-hearted, easy-going. Everyone was touched by his care, at the end you would probably start to imagine, if you could see him every time you open your eyes in the morning, there's no point fearing the unending changes of the world.

A "Simple Beijing Man"

When we first met him, he stopped whatever he was doing, he personally stood up from his seat, bowed, and greeted us with a handshake. Nothing has even happened but he already started to thank everyone.

The room was decorated in a way that it seemed like an ordinary winter morning with warm light shining into the room. He lied on the bed, looked up with anxiety and curiosity. The things that were going to happen were all new to him, with no preparations, he laughed.

Everything was his first time. It was his first time having a magazine photo shoot after returning to Beijing from Korea, it was his first time having a solo interview. Last time, David Beckham was the male solo artist who appeared on the ELLE cover. He is Luhan's idol. In 2002's World Cup, this amazing player caught his attention during the England match. Later then, he was totally subdued by Manchester United. "There was once when the sports channel played a documentary about Manchester United, I saw it, and I started liking them. Manchester United has gone through glory as well as shame, they have a type of spirit, the spirit of red devils", he then got up, sat with his legs crossed and started to tell me about the finale of 1999's European Championship, Manchester United vs Bayern Munich. "Bayern was very strong that time. They had a difficult time during the finals, Manchester United was losing 0:1, but they scored in two goals in the last 4 minutes, two corner kicks , and turned against Bayern Munich. During that time, they have already started carving Bayern Munich's name on the trophy, but then they had to carve it again." He would watch that match occasionally,  he got more and more excited as he continued to talk about it, he was so proud that it seemed as if he was the one who experienced it. "I really like how Manchester United turns the tables in many matches, I like this feeling, the spirit of not giving up. They didn't give up even when they lost, they continued to buy new football players and reorganise the team."

Q: Did the spirit of this team help you or encourage you?

"To be honest, no." He totally caught me off guard. If it was someone else, they would've at least said something related to it, but he didn't. Yes means yes, no means no. He wouldn't get coerced by the world's anticipation on him. He does whatever he likes.

In the two months after returning to China, his life was simple and organised. His activity range was  just around the area near his house, sleeping  on the bed that he always did when he was young, eating meals cooked by his parents, playing football with the middle-aged men he's close to etc. "It's very ordinary, like a normal Beijing man". Luhan was born and raised in Beijing, his accent is filled with humour.

His new movie is called "Back to 20", so I asked him one of the cliché questions: "If you could go back to 20, what would you do?", he gave an "official reply" at first: "I will still work hard to achieve my goals". He then thought for a while and spoke out another possibility: "If I could go back to 20, I think 20 is a little too late, I should go back to at least 14/15 years old. If I could go back to that moment again, I might not have chosen the artist career....." (Some people misunderstood this when I posted this the other day, he did NOT say that he regretted to become an artist / EXO member, he just said that he MIGHT have done something else-  he probably wanted to become a football player as he mentioned that below, so please don't overthink :D )

The Present Luhan Is My Usual Self

Luhan said that his initial dream was to play football and become a professional football player. He would become one of the forwards, and take the initial to score the goal or assist others to score it, "I like the feeling of that". When he said that, you can finally see his real self, below the delicate face lies his domineering heart. He knows that football matches are filled with unexpected situations and cruelty, a football team is just like the growth of a man, there's no turning back.

He showed me his new song, Back to 20's Main OST "Our Tomorrow", "The lyrics is really great, whenever I sing, it reminds me of my current situation, it's actually similar to my role in the movie". " Walking to the finish line alone/ somehow returning to the starting point/ it's a new world/ only now did I realize/ time is not absolute....(the lyrics)" Humans seems so tiny in the galaxy of time. "I want to tell everyone, treasure (everything), treasure when you still have time to do so."

Q: Did you become brave because of this?

"Crazy." When he replaced the word "Brave" with that, he looked calm and firm with his answer. But after all, Luhan's personality is more gentle rather than powerful, or maybe you could say, his attitude towards the world is harmless.

During the photo shoot, the photographer wanted him to try to open up his shirt a little, he didn't not say no, but he politely asked if we could give him some time to make some adjustments. He locked himself into the makeup room for as long as 10 minutes, when he came out, he was drenched with sweat - only then we knew, he specially went to do some push ups to exhibit that every inch of his skin and expression is real.

"Yes, my pace of life is to maintain the status quo. My present self is my usual self. I get shy in front of cameras, that's my instinct, I'm shy. But I like to challenge myself too. I'll feel awkward and strange though. I am the type of person who often feels awkward."

One of his rare sincere words. He doesn't usually say those, but he said it now. A person who was not born for the stage, but was fated to catch people's attention, he has no choice but to follow his inner self.

Wake up from the dream anytime, and live the beautiful moments once again.

When we were eating our lunchboxes  face-to-face, we talked about whether we should buy a car or not, he immediately replied and said buy, buy a public vehicle! "During the peaks of the traffic jams we can even take the bus lane, pick up everyone and send each of them home. How great is that!" He ate the meat satisfyingly while speaking.

After eating, he changed his outfit into a white T-shirt and shorts, walking around with slippers on, just like a high-school boy wandering around his dorm during his break time. I told him about this thought of mine, his eyes smiled and curved like the crescent moons.

"I miss the high-school life, so carefree, (now)it  is not as simple as before. During that time we just focused on the college entrance examination, and we thought that it was the most important of all. Thinking of it now, how great would it be if it stayed that way."

Did time change you?

"More or less. For example, some of my thoughts in the past are different now, time changed my appearance and body as well. Before, (my face) wouldn't get swollen no matter how much I eat at night. /laughs/ I slowly become more practical, after coming into contact with the society and understanding it, I slowly realised that it wasn't that good as I expected. I was used to the way of my life last time. During that time, my goal was to become a singer, an artist, I would do anything to reach the goal."

You are just like all of us when we were young, time slowly washed away some of our belongings.

"Actually time has already washed away a lot of things, it has washed away a lot of things" Many things that cannot be explained were hidden in Luhan's reply.

In this day with Luhan, the words he said the most were "Alright", "Mhmm (yes)","ok!". The expression he used the most was a shy smile/laugh, the most enjoyable moment was when he lied down on the bed and closed his eyes.

Q & A

ELLE: What is the enjoyable part about performing?

Luhan: I am acting out my own self in the movie, so I don't have too much feeling about that, but I can totally feel how it would be if I were to challenge myself and act out a role that is not similar to my true self. I'll go for it, how do I say it, a new experience in life I guess. I am willing to clear out myself and live a different lifestyle.

ELLE: Look at you, keeping the most simple black hairstyle, is that a symbol of returning to purity and simplicity?

Luhan: From debut until now, the things that I've never tried are the simple things. I personally like to try out different styles and looks, I wanted to challenge myself, in normal life it's difficult to find an opportunity to do so, so I'm challenging myself using the opportunities an artist gets. It has been a long time since I've tried out natural and simple styles, I really wanted to do so. It's feels pretty good, simple. /laughs/ I don't need to think too much if it's simple. A simple appearance can create a different ambience. Looking at myself in the mirror, I can get that feeling.

ELLE: How will you describe your current status?

Luhan: To face everything bravely and create a new starting point. My motivations, firstly it's fans and friends, second is my family and people who have helped me, I want to repay them, a gift.

ELLE: What type of people do you like and admire?

Luhan: Um....First, they need to be a loyal friend...how do I say it, actually I think people will feel a little tired getting along with me.....I don't get along with people that well, I need quite a long time to know more about them.

ELLE: If people hurt you, what will you do?

Luhan: Depends on the situation, I think. Being in this career, I don't really mind it anymore. I used to mind it before, but to maintain one's public image, even if you are innocent, if people say that you are wrong, you can't do anything to change their minds.

ELLE: You are brought up in a good environment. Do you think the world has more brighter sides or darker sides?

Luhan: More brighter sides, but I will think about things in the darker side. Every time I start to do something new, I will try my best to lower my expectations to the results, but I will not lower the expectations to myself, I will try my best. If I get a good result, I'll be very happy. I'm considered as the self-high type of person.

ELLE: What do you think about your appearance?

Luhan: I will get shy when people say that I'm handsome, I'll get shy, yeah. I don't really put much attention on my appearance.

ELLE: In a relationship, what qualities do you look for the most in a girl?

Luhan: Kind and warm-hearted. I think love is just like playing football, requires great perseverance.

ELLE: If you have kids in the future, how will you educate them?

Luhan: I will tell them to live their lives properly, be an ordinary person with a normal view of life and value, be a righteous person. I'll let them do whatever they like to do as long as they don't regret when they grow up.

ELLE: What do you want to treasure now?

Luhan: The time with my family, I've been away for too long and missed too many moments...let's just stop it here, alright.

ELLE: What is your new year wish?

Luhan: I hope that everyone is happy and healthy. Hope that time can pass slowly

Exclusive Interview of Luhan in HK's Apple Daily Magazine

The ex-Chinese member of Korea's hottest male group EXO -Luhan, after he went solo, his work schedule remains to be packed, and recently he was invited to guest star in Sandra Ng's new CNY (Chinese New Year) movie "12 Golden Ducks". He is playing the role of a dancer in the movie, dancing to Kpop hot songs along with Wyman and Sandra Ng who cross dressed as a man. Luhan worked in Korea for quite some time,  it was his first time acting in a Hong Kong movie, he praised the movie crew. When he had the exclusive interview with the magazine few days ago, he also revealed that he thinks the Hong Kong lunch boxes are really delicious, and he also revealed that he secretly went to the Avenue of Stars at night.

Last year, Luhan filed a lawsuit against SM to nullify his contract due to their unfair treatment to the Chinese members, but his popularity continued to rise, Sandra Ng invited Luhan because of his high popularity, she invited this "Kpop Star" sincerely to guest star as a dancer in  "12 Golden Ducks", and have a Kpop dance battle in the movie. When Luhan was asked why he decided to act in a film that would not screen in China, he said: "Because it is very honourable to work with Sandra Ng sunbae, and I always like to watch HK-produced movies." Luhan laughed and stated that he didn't know much about his role, he went to Hong Kong in a hurry. He also stated that he couldn't perform well due to his anxiety, but Sandra Ng greatly praised Luhan: "Although Luhan is a little shy in front of the camera, but I think out of 20, he gets 19." Sandra also revealed that the shy Luhan is very friendly in private, all the crew members love him. She said that having a newbie in the movie will definitely add a new element to the traditional CNY films.

When Luhan was asked whether his appearance in "12 Golden Ducks" would bring a huge impact on the box-office results, he laughed and skipped the question. When the interviewer continued to ask him whether he will film bed scenes in the future, Luhan shyly stated that he does not have any plan about that yet, probably because there are still many underage student fans. When asked if he was going to sing any songs in the movie, he said teasingly:"It is a secret, I hope to give everyone a surprise." And Luhan who barely reveals anything gave a small preview to Hong Kong fans: "I am currently planning to release my solo album, I hope that everyone will look forward to it." When he was asked whether he will continue to act in HK movies, he turned into a little fanboy immediately and said: "Of course, I hope that I can work with different sunbaes, including Andy Lau, Donald Chow and Stephen Chow, they are my idols."

Mediation with SM was unsuccessful

Although this was Luhan's first time coming to Hong Kong for a solo schedule, he did not seem like he was not used to it. Other than that, Luhan and another ex-Chinese member of EXO- Kris had mediations with SM yesterday at Seoul Central District Court, but they have still failed to reach an agreement. Their legal rep stated that they will set another mediation date, but they didn't reveal any specific details. EXO received the Daesang at the Golden Disk Awards the night before, yesterday, they have also announced that they will begin their tour in Korea in March.

Journey to becoming an idol - An amateur football player who wants to become a singer

Luhan has a beautiful name, he looks like someone who has come out from the comic, a character that is only present in dramas, it seems like he is perfectly tailor-made just for the entertainment industry. But the reality is—”Luhan is my real name, 鹿(Lu) is my family name,晗(Han) means the arrival of dawn because I was born during midnight.” Luhan explained the meaning behind his name. When the interviewer was amazed at how his name suits this entertainment industry perfectly, your adorable Luhan continued to explain:”These two words have a total of 22 strokes!” “Um…is there anything particular about it?” “It’s because the number ‘4’ and I are fated, 22 strokes, 2 + 2 = 4. I first signed my contract on April 14, Thursday, and if I randomly on my phone, it would either be 4:44 am or 4pm” He talked about all these coincidences which sounded quite like some fated fantasy, the straight-faced Luhan somehow looked adorable, “Believing these occasionally is ok, life will become more interesting.”

Born in 1990 in Beijing, Luhan was brought up by his parents like any of the ordinary kids, “When I was young I didn’t have any dreams, I thought that doing anything was alright for me, until I watched World Cup in 2002”, he said. That year, Bora Milutinović who coached the China football team went into the World Cup, it became part of everyone’s memory. In the same year, the 12 years old Luhan started to like David Beckham, and because of him, he started liking Manchester United. He never expected himself to become a dedicated fan of Manchester United. Luhan looked back at his old days and said: “Actually when I was first into football, I messed up a little, I once thought that Arsenal’s Henry was a member of Manchester United because their jerseys looked alike, hahaha…..”. Sounds like a foolish yet adorable thing.

Teenager Luhan was dedicated to football, he worked hard for many years, trying to achieve his goal of becoming a professional football player . After school, he would go for training, the word 'artistic' does not even go along with him. “My classmates had their own music bands, but for a sports person like me, I wasn’t quite interested in that, I felt the things I did were more manly, hahaha” But unfortunately, he was unable to become a professional football player due to his parent’s rejection, “They think that it is too dangerous being an athlete, will get injured and leave a lot of illnesses. They just want to send me to college, let me find a good job and make a living.”

If you separate Luhan’s life into two parts, before 18, he was still a not-so-artistic teenager, then 18 would be his life-changing part of his life. The 18 years old high-school student Luhan headed to Korea for further studies. Casually walking on the streets, he was scouted by a casting agent and became a singer. Why Korea? First Experience as a Movie Actor - I get shy when I look at my own parts

The movie “Back to 20” is considered as  Luhan’s first solo work after 3 years of debut. Although he had MV filming and reality show experiences, he still felt very nervous when he acted for his first movie, and he suffered sleepless nights because of that. In the movie, his partner Yang Zi Shan used words like “Naturally Blank and Cute” to describe Luhan. She still remembers during the filming process, Luhan would quietly mumble: So nervous, so nervous, what to do. “It makes people want to protect him when they see him”, she said. There was a scene in the movie where Yang Zi Shan had to kiss Luhan’s cheeks, the moment she kissed him, “His face turned red immediately”, she laughed as she teased him, although he retorted and claimed that he was just shocked from the sudden kiss. A few weeks before he joined the crew, he transformed from a person who has never even touched a guitar before to a rocker despite his busy schedules, this left a deep impression on Director Chen Zheng Dao, “He didn’t only learn guitar, he completed the bicycle scene on his own.”

Luhan got verified on weibo as an “actor”, he apparently still looks a little lost and blank, “I became an actor already? I only acted in one movie.” After the pre-screening of "Back to 20", numerous film critics complimented Luhan's performance with some encouragement and said that he is naturally and cute. His best buddy Cobby made a movie review about him too, he said "As a newbie, he is doing a great job, but he still needs to improve his fluency of speaking ouy his script lines and the emotional scenes can be acted out more naturally." Staffs revealed that until now, Luhan has received around 30-40 movie invitations. He has many opportunities, but it seems like Luhan wants people to see the other sides of him instead of just his looks. Despite his packed schedules, Luhan is currently taking acting classes, he learnt how to let out yourself in his first lesson. Cute Flower Boy or Tough Manly Boy? - Luhan makes fun of himself.

Male god, beautiful flower boy, blankly adorable etc. these words have been repetitively used to describe this 90-liner idol, his friends always tease him about girls who endlessly support him. "His best buddy" Cobby revealed, when they were in high school's cafeteria, girls would turn back and start staring at him. One of the script writer said, "I can give him a tailor-made character which suits him perfectly, really! I did some research on his pictures, he really looks good in all angles, and he looks clean inside out. To the Chinese entertainment industry, a person like him who has a face that every girl drools over for, he will be at the top."

At the commercial filming site, the interviewer kept on asking Luhan to do cute expressions. Looking at how he speaks to staffs shyly,  they once again confirmed that he is the chick's magnet. But... "Luhan, you're too thin" "Not really, (takes a glance at the mirror), I've been eating a lot recently and I gained weight (he pointed his cheeks)." The moment you talk about football, car, watches, you will light up Luhan's interest, he wouldn't stop talking. He even had a debate with the interviewer about who is better: Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? Staffs tried to cut into this 'meaningless debate', but the interviewer and Luhan were determined to make their questions clear. And, can you imagine Luhan eating at the side of the street when he was a high school student? He tried to escape from his house during his rebellious times but his parents were far more cold-hearted than him. Luhan decided to return home after an hour because he was scared that he might starve himself.

Who said that this 90 liner is from the peak of Himalayas? He's like a witty and humorous person in private. His staff secretly told the interviewer- Don't think that Luhan looks cute, he is a tough guy, he eats a lot, he can eat everything and he looks good when eating, "We all told him that he looks like he's filming a CF whenever he's eating!". He is very straightforward, for example, being known as one of the male gods, other male artists would've felt so happy, but when it comes to Luhan, he made fun of himself and said: "ha? Male God? Don't they need to be tall?"

Luhan is always surrounded by fans wherever he goes - Fans' such actions have become quite troublesome

On Dec 29 2014, Luhan took the bullet train from Beijing to Shanghai. That was his first time travelling this Shanghai ever since he terminated his contract as an EXO member. Due to his fear of heights, Luhan chose to take the bullet train. To prevent fans from following them, staffs have tried to confuse the fans by buying the plane tickets too, but fans still managed to find out about it. The information about Luhan's train leaked even before Luhan departed, many fans bought the business seats of the same train. When Luhan was still in the train, the trending topic "Prince of the Bullet Train" have already been read more than 10 million times within a few hours; when Luhan was still in the train, pictures of his whole outfit including the shoes designed by a famous American designer started trending on SNS; when Luhan was still in the train, the lobby of the Shanghai Train Station was packed with thousands of fans; when Luhan was still on the road, the representatives of the area started to plan how will they be able to maintain the order and ensure the safety of the people. At last, Luhan was unable to meet the fans, he was escorted by the police and took the VIP exit.

That was just the beginning. In this virtual world where everyone can receive messages instantaneously, nothing can be hidden. Outside the hotel, fans were staying there 24/7. The front entrance, back entrance as well as the car park were continuously "monitored" by people who would send other fans "live updates". On the 30th, Luhan attended the press conference of "Back to 20", as usual, the venue was packed with people, quite a lot of people started to sell Luhan-related goods at the entrance, and scalpers began to sell staff passes to fans. When the event ended, fans kept on following Luhan, he had no choice but to go to his friend's house and secretly switch cars. But this did not work, when Luhan arrived at one of Shanghai's well-known wonton restaurant, fans and paparazzis have already prepared their cameras. It seems to be impossible for him to eat freely and casually at street stalls. 

On the 31st, Luhan had to film a commercial which was not open to the public. The staffs soon faced  a dilemma when fans kept on following them. At last, they had no choice but to ask for help from friends. After using many cars to distract the fans, Luhan finally could focus on his job. However, when Luhan was returning to Beijing, the airport was terribly packed with people and it almost led to a stampede, the situation was very messy. Being the idol who almost tops every chart ranked by the new media staff, his fans support are one of the essential factors which led to Luhan's rise in popularity and career. However, those fans' actions have become a burden to Luhan's private life as well as his work. Well, how can he overcome this problem?

"I was afraid that I might screw up my first acting job"

Q:  When Director Chen Zheng Dao commented on your performance, he said that at first, he chose you because of your high popularity, he didn’t expect you to act that naturally. Do you know many people are coming to you because of your popularity?

Luhan: Is it better to know about that or to not know about that? haha.

Q: Will your high popularity give you stress?

Luhan: Yes, I feel stressed. (When you decided to film this movie, did you think about those that much?) When I found out that I was filming this movie, there were only 2-weeks until my filming date, I didn’t have much acting experiences and I had very little time to get ready, I was really nervous at first.

Q: Not excitement?

Luhan: At first I thought it was fake, I couldn't believe it myself too. My mom called and asked me "The news said that you are going to act in a movie?" I even said "No, it's definitely fake, at this stage I won't be acting a movie first."

Q: Before the filming began, did you go for acting classes?

Luhan: Yes, I went for one class in Korea, the teacher was a Korean, he/she taught me some basics but I couldn't understand most of it because he/she used professional terms /laughs/.

Q: After watching the movie, are you happy with your performance? Will you feel like this- “Wow how did I act this well?”

Luhan: No /laughs/, I stop watching when it comes to my part. I’m not used to looking at myself on a big screen, I feel a little awkward/ embarrassing, I would want to fast-forward the movie.

Q: In the movie, you wanted to invite Yang Zi Shan to join your band, you looked very shy, did you basically just acted out your normal self?

Luhan: I get shy very easily, and at the time, the director also wanted the shy feeling.

Q: Are you always shy in front of just girls, or strangers too?

Luhan: Girls who are considered strangers to me /laughs/. Maybe I’m like that too in front of stranger.

Q:  Compared to the Korean version of the movie, you have a lot more parts. After watching the Korean version, do you feel stressed?

Luhan: Yes I do, because it was my first time acting. I have never done something like that, I was afraid that I might screw up, afraid that people might say that I'm not acting well or natural enough.

Q: After watching the pre-screening of the movie, many media staffs think that you have talent in acting, will that boost your confidence?

Luhan: Yes, it will bring me more confidence. I also feel that acting is really interesting, that's why I'm taking acting classes now. In the movie, I basically acted out my real self, in the future, I hope that I can find a rolethat is not that similar to my real self, I want to challenge myself.

Q: What is your dream character?

Luhan: A hot-blooded one? or maybe a depressed character?

Q: Don’t you want to act as one of those domineering CEOs? Not your style?

Q: What kind of movies do you not like to watch?

Luhan: Romantic ones?

Q: Why don’t you watch romantic films? Is it because you can’t get it?

Luhan: No no no, just feels a little unreal.

Luhan: Yes I do, but for movies, I like those which are more tense and intense.

Luhan: If there is a suitable character, I can challenge myself. (Like those deeply-in-love characters?) I hope that when my manager chooses my script for me, he can choose a character that is not too cheesy /laughs/.

Q: How can a romance movie be not cheesy?

Luhan: Don’t just use sweet phrases to flatter girls, show some sincere actions.

Q: You said that you were very nervous when Yang Zi Shan kissed you, how will you perform that with actions in the future? It was just a kiss on the cheek.

Luhan: /laughs/ I can work on this slowly.

Q: I actually liked that scene, she just jumped up and kissed your face.

Luhan: Actually, I knew I would have something like that (the scene), but I didn't know when she would kiss me. So when I was acting, it was very sudden. I didn't know what to do after that. That don't-know-what-to-do expression was what the director needed.

Q: Was that your first time being kissed by a jumping girl?

Luhan: Yes, it was a little awkward/embarrassing…hahaha

Q: What kind of movies do you like?

Luhan: “Iron Man” is my favourite. (You like the Marvel series?) Yes, the others are alright, Iron Man is the most handsome /laughs/

Q: You’re indeed a straight man.

Luhan: Haha, I even bought a lot of those figures (um…will fans send you Iron Man figures in the future?) I don’t think so /laughs/ The original version is quite hard to get, sometimes I don’t know where I can get it.

About His Football Dream

"During my rebellious phase, I've also tried to run away from home"

Q: You didn't manage to become a professional football player, were there any regrets?

Luhan: A lot of regrets. It was my first dream. At that time, I kept on telling my parents, send me to England, I want to go to Manchester City.

Q: When did you finally realise that you will not able to achieve your dream?

Luhan: After I told them countless times about it, they told me that it was too late for me, I was too old. I believed what they said that time, but then I realised that was not actually the case /laughs/.

Q: The reason they don't allow you to become a football player is because they are afraid that you might get injured?

Luhan: Yes, they are worried that I might get injured and drag illnesses along with me.

Q: Did you want to prove yourself to your parents?

Luhan: Maybe a little, but after debut, I felt like there's no need to prove anything, actually, as long as I'm happy, they're happy too.

Q: What did you do during your rebellious phase? What was the most mischievous  thing that you've done?

Luhan: The most mischievous thing? (Run away from home? Stop eating? Go on a hunger strike?) Definitely not. (You won't starve yourself?) Yes, haha. I tried to run away from home, I left at 10, but returned home after an hour. My parents were too cool, to them, it's impossible to get anything from them if I do things like these, so there's no point running away from home.

About His Plans

"At this stage, I want to get the newcomer award."

Q: Is there any award that you particularly want to get?

Luhan: At this stage, I want to get the newcomer award the most, I'll continue to improve my acting skills and act more, step by step.

Q: Do you know that the newcomer award, the artist will only be nominated if it is their first movie? If you can't get it now, you won't have any chances in the future.

Luhan: I am the supporting role.

Q: Well it's the same, it's your first movie work, a once in a lifetime chance.

Luhan: I guess I will. Before, I was with a group, but now I'm doing everything individually.

Q: Won't your fear of heights be a little troublesome for your career?

Q: Are you the type of homebody who likes to play games?

Luhan: Yes. (What type of games do you play?) All sorts, mobile games too.

Q: Have you ever told people on SNS that you are Luhan but they don't believe you?

Luhan: No. Previously I've seen my friends doing that, when the other players look at his ID, they would come and ask him: "You like EXO?" He would tell them that he's an EXO member. The person would say "stop kidding, hahahaha". My IDs are very interesting, people won't find out.

Q: Something like "我的滑板鞋" (My Sneakers)?

Luhan: haha, 摩擦摩擦  /laughs/

Q: Do you go to forums?

Luhan: I go to forums related to football, cars, watches etc.

Luhan: Yes, boys like complicated things. (How is that complicated?) It's very complicated! Just go and read about it and you'll understand. Patek Philippe & Co. just released a new watch to celebrate their 175th Anniversary. There's only 7 pieces in the world. I watched the video about the making of the watch, I asked how much it was, it was 20 million (he continues to analyse why the watch is worth this price, alright alright, he's really good at it)

Q: Do you watch top gear?

Luhan: I watch it occasionally and watch them drive different cars. If there are cars that I like, I would look at their test drive videos, one by one.

Q: Your interest are very straight (manly).

Luhan: Yes, manly.

Q: So you're working on your abs and muscles, making people feel that you're a manly person?

Luhan: I will show everyone once I have the chance. (Is your body figure similar to what I've described?) Half-half.

Q: Playing football makes people's legs thick easily, it's not a trouble for you?

Luhan: No, many people think that thick legs are sexy.

Luhan: I guess so, I met David Beckham once. I saw him walk towards me and and passed by beside me, he was pretty tall, I was really nervous and excited during that time but I acted very calmly and said "Hi" to him and he replied "Hi". Luhan: More or less.

Luhan: It's too cold, I came down. I want to act in comedy films in the future maannn (he didn't say the man part but it's a similar tone)

Q: Will you hold (maintain) your image for fans?

Luhan: I never held my image from the very beginning. There are a lot of ugly moments of me /laughs/ I didn't even know I could do expressions like those. When I saw those pics, I was like "waaa! So ugly!"

Q: Your weibo received a Guinness World Record, fans gave you a lot of energy and support. Are there any touching interactions between you and your fans?

Luhan: There's  a lot. For example, when I attended the first press conference after returning to China, they came over and supported me, I was very touched. (Staff: Actually he gets touched whenever fans support him, they are always very earnest, and they always travel overseas just to take a glance of him. He gets touched every time. Sometimes we don't allow him to go out because we are afraid that it might cause a mess, but he would always say that the fans traveled overseas to see me, I need to greet them.)

I remember I was the best player that time, our team was the second or third, I forgot, but anyways we received awards and I also won a pair of shoes."
