Going to peace meetings and seeing how Eren massacred these people and feeling responsible about what happened but still having to act like he is the hero.
Feeling bad that he still feels compassion and love for Eren even after seeing how innocent people were affected by his actions.
People celebrating how he murdered his best friend. Selfishly wanting to leave it all behind but he can't. He needs to be the hero world needs.
So if you see AoT fans going around saying that Jeankasa has now been confirmed (as in, the man accompanying Mikasa at the grave in the end was Jean), it's because of tweets like this
The first one in particular was the one that started it all. It's from a fan in Japan who watched The Last Attack with the audio guide on, as in the accessibility feature where the events on screen are verbally described as they happen for any viewers who might need it.
Interpret this how you will but just thought I'd explain it for those outside of twt.

He's one of the most selfless characters in the story. That's why he joined the scouts even tho he was terrified. That's why he chose to join the Alliance and gave up his desires.
27. this selflessness and honesty is shown in his bond with her. That’s why we believe Mikasa truly loves him and marries him in the end, because Jean would never accept anything less than genuine feelings from her.

Mikasa and Jean’s relationship appreciation thread. A bond founded on complicity, respect and comradeship.
Long before meeting Mikasa, Jean drew a picture of his "dream girl," who looked exactly like her. When Jean first sees Mikasa, he compliments her hair, develops a crush and his jealousy of Eren starts.
2. They were only 12 years old at this time, and Mikasa is not disgusted by his approach, she just says “thanks”. I'd like to note that, in AoT, this is the only introduction between 2 characters that has a romantic setting, subtly leading the audience to associate them in that way.
3. Both Jean and Mikasa start with selfish motivations. Jean craves comfort due to his cowardice, while Mikasa is consumed with protecting only her loved ones, displaying a nihilistic view of the world. Over time, they both evolve, becoming more selfless and mature.
4-Jean's attitude towards Mikasa and Eren evolves significantly after he joins the Scouts, especially after Marco dies. He transitions from a reactive, childish teenager to someone who approaches the situation with maturity, accepting that Mikasa doesn't see him the same way.
In fact, Mikasa not returning his feelings is beneficial for Jean's development. As a spoiled kid who prefers an easy life, Jean's character improves through his adversities and frustrations, helping him understand that you can't always get what you want.
5- On the other hand, Mikasa tends to hold tightly to her convictions, even when they’re shaped by emotion. She’s often caught up in her own world, struggles to see things clearly, and doesn’t fully consider the consequences of her actions.
For example in these 2 scenarios, she misreads what Eren is thinking. She thinks he’s worried about being separated from her, when in reality he’s just thinking about excelling as a soldier.
6-Or when Eren was eaten, she wasn't able to accept reality at first and acted out of impulse without thinking about other people's safety.
7- We see her craving that special connection. She sees this couple protecting each other and wants that for her and Eren.
8- Meanwhile, when Jean feels like he's lost everything, he thinks of Mikasa and regrets never expressing his feelings for her.
9-Shortly after that, he jumps right behind her despite questioning the way she handled the situation.
9. Btw, it's heartbreaking to see that Jean lost hope and gave up on his life when he found out she might have been dead.
10- As we said, it's interesting how the romantic aspect of their dynamic is set up at the beginning of the story. Moreover, the Trost arc was published in manga before the training chapters.
11-Besides their different perspectives and jealousy, part of Jean's rivalry with Eren stems from the fact that Jean believes Eren constantly puts Mikasa (and others) in danger.

A controversy was sparked when in May of 2021, Zekken leaked the 10 extra pages of SNK’s 34th volume. The leaker used to give brief descriptions of what was seen in the pages a day or two before posting the real scans
In one of the panels, Mikasa was seen holding a baby and being hugged by a man who Zekken described as “very similar to Jean”.
There were mixed reactions from the fandom and various theories trying to debunk that the man’s identity was Jean’s. All of which will be addressed here.
IS IT JEAN? PHYSICAL RESEMBLANCES
Let’s start with the claim that the man doesn’t physically resemble Jean or that the resemblance isn’t a confirmation. Let's take a look at him in S4. As you can see, the way his hair falls back is strikingly similar to when Jean was 17 and he was beginning to grow his mullet.
While here's Jean at age 22: pay attention to his reflection in the mirror
We also have an interesting sequence of a man in a suit purchasing a newspaper at the very beginning of S4P1. We can't see his face fully, but we all agree on his identity, don't we?
About the height difference, it’s true anime Jean (190cm) looks too tall compared to Mikasa (176cm) when they’re walking back from the grave with their baby. However, this might be because the proportions are a bit off even in the frame where all ambassadors are visiting Eren's grave.
In the edited screenshot we see Mikasa and the man we 100% know to be Jean standing side by side. We’re personally against the idea that a man in his 20's can grow inches taller, but this disproportion between Jean's height and Mikasa's can be verified in this screenshot as well
Whatever the reason why Jean looks taller than he's supposed to be, we might not know, but it's not isolated from the panel where they are walking side by side down the hill. Even then, the height difference in the manga is accurate to Jean and Mikasa’s
Some people said Mystery Man’s hair color in the anime looked too light to be Jean’s, classifying the man as blonde while pointing out that Jean’s hair color was brown. The thing is, it’s light brown, or dark blonde. The coloring for Mystery Man’s hair is accurate to Jean’s
However, not only ambassador Jean in the credit sequence under the tree and the mysterious man share the exact same hair shade, but Jean used to be drawn with light hair in early seasons, and even the manga portrays him as blonde/dark blonde, by leaving his hair white.
But let's not forget his signature accessory: the HAT. There are many moments where he uses it. Funny enough, in Jean's dream Mikasa sports long hair, and the character designs in Jean's fantasy match the designs of the characters at the end of the story.
Some even say the woman seen with the man and the baby isn’t even Mikasa because her clothes are different, but not only she’s seen sporting her ponytail, in the manga you can clearly see the scarf. The extra pages have her as a main character, which takes us to the next point
2. IS IT EVEN MIKASA? EXTRA PAGES SCENARIO AND E’S RESTING PLACE
Some people state that the identity of the man isn’t confirmed because the script describes them as “people visiting the grave” and doesn’t state their names. Basically, random people at a grave. And there’s a problem with that too.
First, among many things, the last pages follow M’s life progression, from the 3rd anniversary of Eren’s death to the end of her own life. She dresses the same way, still wears a ponytail, and she’s buried with her scarf. We know it’s her also because we see the bandage in the next panel. Now, is that her family or other random people around her?
Considering that Eren’s grave wasn’t signalized as his, with just the year of his death and Mikasa’s message carved in it; it would be impossible (or extremely hard) for a passerby to recognize it. And M mentions it’d be a problem if enemies knew about Eren’s burial place
In addition, we can see in the manga that Jaegerists have seized control of the politics of Paradis and many support the Rumbling, so there’s an attachment to the figure of Eren, considering him the saviour of Paradis.
As happens in the real world with real political leaders, his grave would've become a place of worship, visit, or at the very least a publicly-known site.
People would've been bringing flowers, building statues of memorial sites. But we don’t see that happening, it rather seems like a lonely place with no architectural signs of a leader’s resting place. So it's safe to assume Mikasa kept the location of Eren's grave private.
We see no other people besides the ambassadors and Mikasa’s family approaching the grave for the grave itself, there are just people who pass by without paying attention.
All of this makes us conclude that the only people who knew who the tomb belonged to, were Eren’s closest loved ones. Thus, ruling out strangers as visitors. This is Mikasa, at the very least (of course, joined by Jean).
3. ADRESSING CRACK THEORIES AND SOME OTHER CLAIMS THAT DO NOT REFUTE JEAN AND MIKASA BEING MARRIED
“Mikasa died a virgin because she’s seen with her bandage”
Now we want to address crack theories and some other claims that do not refute Jean and Mikasa being married, starting with the worst one: “Mikasa died a virgin because she’s seen with her bandage”
First, the idea that Mikasa would never marry or have children because she 'keeps herself pure and loyal' for her dead crush is both sexist and racist. Virginity is a social construct created by patriarchal societies to control women. It's not innate nor a medical term. We recommend to read:
Plus, asian women like Mikasa are often subjected to harmful stereotypes in media that reduce them to submissive tropes. These narratives contribute to real-world violence and discrimination. We reject those problematic statements and share some resources as to why #SexismInMedia
Many quote the final guidebook from June, 2021. After years of seeing this claim, we've understood it says Mikasa didn't show her mark to anyone but Eren, and that implies she didn't show it anymore because she "did not have biological children" to pass it down to. But does it?
Yet, in the manga and the anime she shows it to Historia, Kiyomi, and other strangers. Even if the guide says it, we can assume it's not talking about the post canon period.
Besides, an adopted son is still a son. Should it not apply to adopted children as well? Since her mother never stated that her children have to be conceived by her to pass the mark down, it was something that people assumed.
This argument is based on speculation and goes against the most obvious interpretation of what we see in both the manga and anime. Not drawing Mikasa growing old with a man and a family, staying "loyal' to Eren would've been much easier, don't you think?
“The ring that Mikasa was shown wearing in her burial is a purity ring”.
“The ring that Mikasa was shown wearing in her burial is a purity ring”. Purity rings appeared only in the USA in the early 1990's. These aren't a tradition in other parts of the world. So it doesn’t make sense that the anime team chose this symbol to state that she died a virgin
However, a ring on the literal ring finger means marriage all over the world. And judging by clothes aesthetic and technological advancement, AOT S4 takes place in the 30's or 40's, even though it is not supposed to be set in our world. Way before purity rings were in fashion
"Wedding rings don't exist in Paradis Island, as we don’t see Carla or Dina wearing any"
"Wedding rings don't exist in Paradis Island, as we don’t see Carla or Dina wearing any". True! Yet, since Paradis opened up, new trends were imported, and new generations of Paradisians are seen with clothes resembling Marleyan fashion during the 850s in AoT’s timeline.
“THE FLOWERS SHE’S BURIED WITH SYMBOLIZE PURITY”
"The white flowers she’s buried with symbolize purity”. The flowers are colored in the anime. So that’s debunked. Purity is not the only meaning white holds, it’s the most used color for funerals. Plus the evidence shown previously outweighs this type of symbolic “evidence”.
“THE MAN IS ARMIN”
“The man is Armin”: There's been a fanart based on a draft by Isayama circulating as “evidence” that he's Armin, where A is seen wearing a mullet. In the complete draft we can see Reiner (always cropped out on the edits) and that’s how we know it belongs to the next manga panel
and as we can see, in the final version Armin has short hair at the back. If Isayama wanted to signalize the man as Armin, why did he not use the physical traits we already identify him with? (haircut, no hat, shorter than Mikasa). So no, the man isn’t Armin by any means.
“THE MAN IS JEAN BUT HE’S JOINED BY PIECK”
"These are Jean and Pieck": (NO SHADE TO JP) Pieck doesn’t wear a ponytail nor a scarf or Paradisian clothes. And why would she visit Eren? It’s curious that some people who otherwise deny that it’s Jean accept it's him if it’s Pieck and not Mikasa who joins him.
Besides, the extra pages are meant to show Mikasa’s life progression and how she moved forward while still paying her respects to her first love. It’s her in every panel, why would it be Pieck or a random woman in THAT precise panel exactly? Doesn’t sound cohesive.
“IT’S IMPOSSIBLE THAT SHE GETS MARRIED AFTER EREN’S DEATH BECAUSE SHE WAS BURIED BESIDE HIM”
“She isn’t married because she’s buried beside Eren” We don’t know the location of her grave. If we consider that the events happen in the same scenario and assume it’s in the tree, there’s still no correlation with the other evidence. She can rest in the tree AND be married
No second grave appears under the tree in the frame after Mikasa's funeral. Then we see a brown looking bult, same color of the tree trunk. Mikasa’s tomb is grey: why would it appear brown like it's covered in dirt, when Eren's is many decades older and still looks grey?
4) Conclusions
In addition to everything, we must note that the statement of the man being Jean has a narrative support. It doesn’t come out of nowhere: he has shown signs of affection and attraction towards Mikasa since the first arc and through almost every arc.
There’s a principle in literature called Chekhov’s gun. It states that every element of a story must be relevant, and that something seemingly irrelevant in the beginning is meant to serve the plot or a character arc as the story progresses.
Jean’s crush on Mikasa had no apparent reason to be in the manganime, but was still brought up repeatedly by Isayama, who even bothered to open a chapter of his final arc with Jean dreaming that he has a family with Mikasa. This is good old foreshadowing.
Jeankasa is not (and never was) the main ship of AoT, so it’s understandable that the focus was not on them. But as Mikasa develops, we see that she opens up to other people and she stops being the one who would rather work alone or be alone with Eren.
Destiny finds her unable to live with her first love. This is just part of her cycle as a character and it’s important for her closure, as she is shown to accept her losses and always move forward.
Jeankasa officially canon!!! I’ve honestly seen it as canon for years since the manga panel of Mikasa with a baby and a man that looks like Jean. Seeing people cope about it has been so crazy they act like Mikasa being married and happy is the the worst thing ever
Got hit by a sudden inspiration and wrote 5k words for a historical AU where Mikasa is a princess and Jean is her guard. And then it hit me that historically speaking, a male guard will not be stationed inside a princess' quarters. Now I don't know whether I should discard the fic or post it regardless 🙂
On Tuesday I was cleaning my desk because I'm moving this week. And I found a file that had my JeanKasa sketches from 2021-2022. They were not great (which is why I never posted) but going through them I felt inspired to draw again and even bought a new sketch book to bring with me to the new city.
