brief rant of rx’s character narration

i kind of wanted to do a quick rant on the writing style of Adrian, Gwendy, and Jim.

hi just for some context i am a homestuck so i’m very familiar with typing quirks and typing styles so ill be using my knowledge on that to rant about these briefly. this is mostly because how a person narrates can really tell you a lot about them it’s actually quite funny. Also i’m in serious need of a good rant.

so each character has their own narrative voice that is very distinct down to very subtle details, but to save time and given the fact I haven’t fully finished rx yet i’ll keep to the larger details.

I’ll be starting off with adrian since he’s the MC technically. From the get go Adrian tends to be an over sharer. His sentences runs onto next tuesday. Despite all that however he’s very intelligent and has a way with his words, minus his use of crass humor at times. Though he also can be very dry at times loves to throw in a bombshell randomly. (Ex: “….then I hit my car…” as well as practically yelping and jumping out of his skin like a hurt puppy when he sees gwen after she died. Another thing i want to note about Adrian is that he’s really good with his words when he’s not under stress and now making repeated grammatical and spelling errors.

Jimmy Mushrooms is very interesting, i’m still early in Rx so most of what i’ll be talking about is what i can infer. He’s interesting in the sense of he’s very intelligent yet he has a tendency to play dumb. but he also deflects like a lot. it’s very noticeable; he’s not one to really take the blame. Him in his college years going off how he narrates also strikes me as the guy who’d make taking substances his entire personality trait cause he think it’s what makes him cool. which seemingly backfires in later instances. Jimmy also talks very much so like a redditor that would frequent substance related subreddits or just reddit in general. something I also wanted to note he also has a tendency to replace phrases like “ya’know” with “ya’dig” it doesn’t really have much to do with anything out side of it sticking out to me and such. Going off the way Jimmy narrates— well technically how Adrian narrated Jimmy in issue 2 or 3 jimmy is definitely someone who rather run away and forget his problems hold on to the past then truly ever move forward in life.

now on to Gwendy finally. Gwendy basically talks like every single Genz that was between 12-15 growing up during 2019-2020. She has a lot of internet humor in how she spoke to adrian at times. in which of course Adrian being Adrian which is a millennial didn’t really understand much of it. which made it all the more interesting. a lot of what she displayed was the typically teenage alt kid genz way of narrating at risks just going off the dialogue that adrian had written for her.
