I have been asked before about the things I like about Jack, and I wrote a HUGE post about it only for the tumblr browser to refresh and make me lose everything I had written so it made me unmotivated for the longest time to write it down all over again 😭This time I took the precautions... *cracks knuckles*
His very first defining personality trait when we meet him is that he seems cold and blunt. And while that trait might drive other people away, it draws me in. This is probably obvious by now, but I've always had a thing for edgy and serious characters… 🤤 The whole "I don't need friends" attitude implies some level of emotional constipation, and the more unapproachable they are, the more it makes me want to poke at them. Like ok mr edgy guy why do you push people away!! Why do you prefer being alone?? I need to know!!
HIS SENSE OF JUSTICE. Additionally, I have ALWAYS loved characters with a strong sense of justice. Maintaining a high moral code and actually sticking to it consistently is difficult and genuinely admirable. I will never not get weak in the knees when he helps people in danger (THaT SCENE IN THE FIRST EPISODE OF THE ANIME WHEN HE LITERALY SHIELDS TWO NPCS WITH HIS OWN BODY) like a superhero… 🥹
The way he's so loyal and dependable… He shot straight into my favs after book 3 because he stood by Yuu's side THE ENTIRE TIME even though he had absolutely NO REASON TO and gained NOTHING from it. No ulterior motive, no personal benefit, just a pure and noble instinct to make sure they were safe. He offered Yuu and Grim shelter when they had nowhere to sleep (if I remember correctly book 3 takes place in november so it must have been freezing too) Idk this is just so huge to me. Imagine being magicless, your home gets seized, you have no money, and your friends already have too much on their plate to help, so you feel completely and utterly helpless. I don't know about you guys, but I would be freaking out. So Jack stepping in at that exact moment when nobody else could, genuinely felt angelic to me. I wish people gave him more credit for that.
His tsundere-ness is cute 🥰 I don't always like tsunderes because a lot of them are written as nothing but defensiveness and aggression, which ends up feeling emotionally immature and kind of obnoxious. But Jack has exactly the right amount of it. He tries so hard to act like he doesn't care, but he keeps losing the idgaf war epically. There's just something about a huge, physically imposing guy with a deep voice suddenly getting all shy and flustered........so charming....
On top of that, basically all of his wolf/beastman traits!! I've always loved wolves and found their behavior fascinating. I will never not love beastmen/kemonomimi characters because I'm lowkey furry but what makes them especially interesting to me is seeing how their biology and instincts affect their daily lives. Example, Jack himself says he can sniff out scents across an entire mountain and run for hours without getting tired.
And oOUGUH THE BODY LANGUAGE… his tail wagging when he's happy will never not get me 🥰🥰 And his ears!!! The Live2D sprites are pretty limited, but we can see his ears flatten in his surprised sprite, which implies they probably do all the things real canid ears do—flicking, rotating, flattening, reacting to emotions, etc. I love animal ear body language especially when they flatten completely and go airplane mode.... ooouugh very cute…
He is a rule follower, yes. But he's also not afraid to rebel against authority the moment he feels something is unethical or goes against his principles. He refuses to be peer pressured into passively accepting injustice. He stands up against it ON HIS OWN, even when it means facing severe scrutiny, exclusion, or criticism from the people around him. That takes a kind of bravery very few people actually have. If more people had the courage to stand their ground against injustice instead of quietly participating out of fear, I genuinely think the world would be a better place. And rebelling against authority is sexy as hell
A very underrated trait of his is his emotional maturity. Obviously he's not the pinnacle of maturity - none of the first years are - but he's consistently willing to reflect on his mistakes and become a better person (very rare trait among the twst cast). A good example is his lab coat vignette in which he accidentally throws away Jade's mushroom log because he thinks it's rotten trash. When confronted, he doesn't make excuses or deflects the blame, he apologizes properly and finds a way to make up for what he did (all while HATING octa's ass and knowing full well they're putting on a show). This is big when you consider Jack absolutely has the NRC pride and stubbornness that most of the cast has, but he's self-aware enough to know when he is in the wrong and put that pride aside. By the way super biased opinion but this is why I heavily associate him with the beast from beauty and the beast,,,, finding you can change, learning you were wrong 🥹
A FAMILY MAN. HE TALKS ABOUT HIS FAMILY SO FONDLY ALL THE TIME. He's mentioned his younger siblings so many times already (I can think of at least four examples off the top of my head), and every single time it reminds me that he's actually an older brother... I think because he's constantly treated like the baby of Savanaclaw it's easy to forget that he has little siblings looking up to him. Taking them on adventures, teaching them things, making a flower crown (tried, but failed to) for his little sister… he's genuinely such a good big bro...
I saved the best for last BECAUSE THE WAY HE TALKS ABOUT ROMANTIC LOVE???? HE WANTS TO FOLLOW HIS PARENTS' AND GRANDPARENTS EXAMPLE, FIND ONE PERSON, MARRY THEM, AND STAY BY THEIR SIDE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE hE TALKS ABOUT LOVE WITH SO MUCH SINCERITY AND TENDERNESS TOO BC TO HIM FINDING A LIFE PARTNER IS GENUINELY ONE OF HIS MAJOR GOALS IN LIFE AND EVEN THE OTHER FIRST YEARS POINT OUT IS THINKING ABOUT MARRIAGE BEFORE HES EVEN THINKING ABOUT GETTING A JOB HES SO ROMANTIC ITS INSANE AND HE LITERALLY ADMITS HE DOESNT CARE ABOUT BEING POPULAR BC HES SAVING HIMSELF FOR THE ONE WHEN THE TIME COMES HES OUT HERE PLANNIGN FOR A LIFE LONG COMMITMENT ON HIS FIRST DATE WHAT HTE HELLLHLKLKLKKLFKLDKLGD

People bring up jamil thinking kalim is fine due to laughing about the poisoning as jamil disregarding kalim's feelings but jamil also doesn't bring his own poisonings up during his overblot. You think he'd have more issue with it. But there's real possibility jamil has also been taught to accept this and doesn't see being poisoned as big deal to himself either.

In part 4 of the Christmas event, Swing takes away Floyd’s unique magic, Bind the Heart, and uses it to deflect incoming attacks. As you would expect, Floyd is upset that Swing did this. More specifically, he says:
Roughly:
“You think you can get away with collecting/taking it (his unique magic) from me without a contract? Hah?”
“Don’t use people’s things without permission. Hey, give it back to me right now!”
Importantly, the effect of Swing’s UM is swapping one’s “most important” magic. In most instances, this would be unique magic.

At one point, Floyd willingly gives his unique magic to Azul in exchange for a deep voice. Of course, this was all part of a grander plan to outwit Jamil in book 4—but the fact remains that he trusts AZUL to handle his “most important” magic 🧍♂️
Back in 3-33, Azul, on the verge of overblotting, demands that Jade and Floyd hand over their UMs. But Floyd turns him down, with his reasoning being that Azul is now "actin' [...] pretty lame". Floyd doesn't get mad (like he does with Swing); he just acts disappointed. (Granted, at least Azul is asking instead of outright stealing, so it's not the exact same circumstances as Swing, who does steal.)
Floyd lost his respect for Azul in this moment, because this isn't the Azul he has come to know and love. His trust can be revoked, because he has the common sense to know who (and when) he can and cannot entrust his "most important" magic to (someone else).
This is more evidence that Floyd and Azul (and Jade too, but he's not as relevant in this instance) are friends, but just don't have the emotional capacity to just be honest and admit that to one another... Cuz tell me why Floyd lets Azul have his "most important" magic and even acts disappointed when refusing Azul, yet he gets PISSED with Switch? Tell me why Floyd specifically brings up a contract when Azul isn't there and there were never business discussions prior to this?? THEY'RE BESTIES IN DENIAL I KNOW THEY ARE.
THEY'LL JUST KEEP CALLING EACH OTHER "BUSINESS ASSOCIATES" UNTIL THE END OF TIME I GUESS 💀
