so!! with the winter set of la bonbonnière series having concluded with azul, i went back and looked at the groovy fruit and their symbolisms :)
this came about because i stumbled upon this post by @/raven-at-the-writing-desk !!!!! i’d say i was loosely inspired by it to write this 🙏
NOTE: i am NOT a professional fruit symbolism expert 😭😭 this is me being curious and sharing it here for fun haha if i got any facts wrong please do let me know!! 💗
FIRST, we have orange with rook and malleus.
-> in general, oranges symbolise the cycle of life and nature, as well as joy and celebration ^_^ given the latter meaning, they are also often associated with christmas, which is why i’m also inclined to believe it was chosen as a fruit for the winter line-up www
-> the tachibana orange specifically is a symbol of eternity in japan (funny choice for malleus innit…). oranges may also represent maintaining “order”, or even symbolise the sun.
-> in regards to rook and malleus, i instantly saw a more linear connection to the latter: malleus, who hasn’t gotten to celebrate many a thing with other people, getting to share joy with his loved ones 🥹 cycle of life + nature may tie back to him as a long-life species and the relationship between the fae and the nature surrounding them…? (is this a stretch)
-> i genuinely don’t know how to cohesively tie this back to rook someone please help i’m not a rook connoisseur rook also seems to have themes of isolation similar to malleus, but i feel like i’m not the right person to phrase it 😅 here’s an interesting post about it though!! + he does have a tendency to share joy and celebration, mostly in the context of celebrating beauty/love. i could say cycle of life and nature is something tied more to his huntsman side perchance…

i am UNBELIEVABLY happy idia got pomegranate as his fruit do not play with me!!! <333
-> if we go by the general symbolism again, pomegranates symbolise life, fertility, abundance, and possibly sanctity. the pomegranate is known for its beautiful shrub, flowers, and fruit!
-> in greek mythology, pomegranate is associated with many greek goddesses, but most prominently with persephone (and adjacently demeter). notably, persephone eats pomegranate seeds that tie her down to the underworld for 3–6 months a year for each seed she consumed.
^ this is like a very short and sweet version of it. i WOULD get into the specifics of demeter’s hymn (the abduction/rape of persephone) but i don’t want to get carried away…
-> interesting how the maybe-depressed characters got the fruit symbolising life
-> life is meant to be lived, am i right? both idia and cater have quite the gloomy outlook on a lot of aspects in life, though :,) i like to think that the symbolism of abundance is more of a nod to how their life is full of abundance even if they may not have realised it; both have made connections at NRC (cater perhaps more so 😭), and have people who care about them bringing “abundance” to their life…
this could be a very personal interpretation but i think they’re both very giving persons, too. they give abundantly (material things or acts of service) to those they care about, so “abundance” makes sense to them through this to me as well.
-> may be another stretch, but the fact that pomegranates are revered for their beauty makes me wonder if it has to do with the fact that both are considered pretty/handsome?
and LASTLY, we have kiwi with lilia and azul!
-> kiwis represent luck, health, abundance/prosperity, as well as growth, resilience, and renewal. they are not native to japan (they’re native to china though!), but were rather imported from new zealand around the 60s and have now become semi-popular + are domestically grown as well (to my knowledge).
-> not inherently associated with lilia or azul, but i believe kiwi (specially chinese kiwifruit) has been applied to medicine at least in china 🤔
-> both lilia and azul have themes of renewal + growth; lilia having been a war-hardened general who learned to love a human and to be more accepting of all races, and azul having been bullied and then creating his own unique magic to turn the tides. i think renewal could also be considered to be his fresh start on-land 🫶
-> they’re both very resilient/perseverant characters!! albeit i see luck and prosperity more azul-specific given his business ambitions, and health as lilia-specific 🙂↕️
