"All children should have a cursed sword. When I reach Rank A my wish will be for all children in Lumiose to receive a free cursed sword."
"I mean, sure. It's probably normal to be afraid of someone you admire in, like, a 'I hope you think I'm cool,' sort of way. Probably less healthy if its the 'I hope you don't fucking kill me,' way. But that's just my opinion."
cheekbone. what makes them smile ?
🅱️one headcanons
Despite everything, Harlan does truly love making music. It's easy to catch him smiling when he plays his guitar, especially when he gets into it; its when he feels most at peace, hands down.

"Imagine... all that talk and yet not even being able to defeat a measly insect—" <- Also painfully weak to scolipede.
nothing like the feeling of having a starter sitting in your drafts and you know What you want to write but your brain cannot seem to produce the damn words about it
" . . . I didn't think museums had living pokemon."
"They don't, usually." ...Well, not as far as Harlan knew, anyway. "But there are ghost pokémon that look like old objects. You wouldn't even know it was alive until it woke up."
"I work at Lumiose Museum. I'm a historian by trade-" and arguably an artifact, depending on who you asked, "-and I enjoy giving tours and helping with museum curation. Why do you ask?"
"Just curious. There are a bunch of ghost types that like to possess old objects. It has to have happened at some point."
Masamune was formerly an inhabitant of the Lumiose Museum. While Harlan was a student, there was an exhibit showcasing Ancient Unovan artifacts - some on loan from museums in Unova, some part of the Lumiose Museum's own collection. Harlan, despite not being the most academic guy around, does really love the museum and visited frequently. On one trip, near to the exhibits closing, a particular sword (believed to date back to the early Isshu era, older even than the legendary twin heroes)... turned out to be a honedge. He took a liking to Harlan and decided that going with this kid sounded a lot more appealing than gathering dust in the museum archives.
"As someone who works into a museum, I'm going to say...no? I think it's more of a hazard to the other artifacts if we don't let it go, so the loss is reduced by letting you keep it."
"That makes sense..." Still, he would have expected a little more concern for a (totally hypothetical) one of a kind ancient artifact. "Uh... so, what museum do you work at, exactly?"
"I . . . DON'T THINK SO?"
"Right, that's what I was thinking too. I mean, nobody has come looking or anything." A beat. "...Hypothetically."
"...Hypothetically, if a museum exhibit comes to life and follows you home, it's not stealing, right?"
Zelda was Harlan's first pokémon before he came to Lumiose. As I mentioned, Zelda is trans—expectation was originally that she would evolve into a Gallade, but she ultimately felt like that wasn't true to who she was. Shortly before moving to Lumiose for college, she decided to start using she/her pronouns; Harlan picked her new nickname, Zelda, to reflect this. Zelda was also the first of Harlan's pokémon to successfully Mega Evolve.

"Malamar do so love to hear themselves speak, don't they?"
"Wait-- what kind of crystals?"
"Man, you must not have visited Lumiose recently. It's impossible to miss 'em. There are these bright pink crystals that pop up all over the place."
