Honestly one of the most detrimental things for my sex life was growing up in a highly conservative (and anti queer) church, which really enforced "no sex before marriage" and "guard yourself from lust" (which was a way of saying "no porn, no jerking off"). So the only time we talked about sex or sexuality was with our Discipleship Partners--older, usually married, men in the church who were meant to shepherd us through to adulthood. And it was only usually to confess our sins.

So, as an adult who stopped going to church like 6-8 (or more?) years prior, I had so little practice talking about sex without feeling shame that I literally did not know how to do it. I only just knew the mechanics of it (from porn...). It took me like 8 or 9 years in the same relationship to stop freezing up when it came up. And only in the last year have I gotten conversational about it.

I know it's the church, because a friend of mine who never left recently got married. Before they had their wedding night, he peppered us both with questions about sex, which he didn't feel he had learned about from the Sex After Marriage class that apparently you got if you married within the church.

The scary part is, I sincerely doubt other folks still in the church had friends like us they could ask...

I've read that a lot of newlywed couples from those kinds of churches cannot bring themselves to have sex and have huge fucking complexes about it. Both "they don't know how to have sex" and "they cannot switch gears and believe that sex is okay now".
