Listen I LOVE fantasy novels about badass women overcoming patriarchal societies, but like… I’m also really really tired of fantasy novels about patriarchal societies?
There’s something very demeaning about the way so many fantasy authors can create fascinating, in-depth worlds and characters and magic systems, but a society in which men and women are simply treated equally is considered “unrealistic.” You cannot tell me that there’s simply no potential world where gender roles/bias aren’t an issue! I don’t believe you! I reject your every-fantasy-society-ever-has-to-resemble-Medieval-times arguments!
Give me my fantasy novels where kings and queens are equally respected and princes AND princesses get to choose whether they want to become a knight or get married for political reasons and even the villains aren’t sexually aggressive towards female characters because that’s just not a thing you do. I hate this “if you’re a woman you’re never going to be fully safe no matter what world you live in!!” outlook. Bring on my escapist fantasy novels about elves riding into the battle on the backs of dragons sans the misogyny, please and thank you.
Exactly.Fantasy is such a wonderful genre in that it opens the door to a whole new world of possibilities (sometimes literally). Why would we want to read about what we are confronted with every day? If you’re creating a whole new world, don’t just assume it shares our same cultural biases.
Give me a fantasy world where women are just as strong as men and everyone knows it, where warrior’s worth isn’t questioned because of their gender but because of their merit. Give me a world where same-couple relationships are common, even encouraged. Give me a world where the gender binary is just a suggestion. Give me heroes who are black, asian, latinx. This rule that fantasy heroes have to be straight white males with misogynistic tendencies and savior complexes is absurd.
With fantasy, you have the power to make a world that’s better than our own. So why not do it?

I know ive discussed it before but. blind sex positivity is counter productive. telling girls to have sex can be equally as harmful as telling girls to be ashamed of sex. especially 20+ year old women talking about “sex positivity” to 15, 16 year old girls. even if you mean well, it can be harmful
this sounds anti-feminist so let me rephrase. the normalization of female sexuality is so so so important and a huge step in the right direction when done correctly. in a perfect world nobody would be ashamed of their sexual history or their sex lives. but that’s not how it is, and when i was fourteen or fifteen, even sixteen, i was force fed this idea that sex was empowering, and it got me into sexual situations that were consensual but still traumatizing because i was too young and too unprepared to handle them. i am ashamed of it. i live with that shame still. sex positivity is important. it is vital. but putting “be a slut, do what you want” over pastel backgrounds and encouraging girls to be a Ho or whatever isn’t doing shit. we need to teach girls how to know when they’re ready and have knowledge of how to handle situations. we need to give girls a safe way to own their sexuality. we need to teach and guide girls to make safe and educated decisions about sex. we need to teach girls that while there is nothing wrong with having sex, there are repercussions. we need to fucking protect girls
