Enjoy another bunch of Lain and Runaan headcanons:

• Runaan was very quiet as a child,and most of the time it was Lain doing the talking. He didnt mind it though, because it gave him more time to do things he liked. Such as reading,training and observing people. Which is why Runaan 'Bad at Feelings' of the Silvergrove actually happened to be the first to clock the feelings growing between Lain and Tiadrin

• As a teenager he was initially very unimpressed with their constantly ogling and flirting because "Training,you two. We're at training, not the fucking brothel get a hold of yourselves moon above-"

Not because he didnt like the idea of them being together but because he saw it as a bit of a distraction from what actually mattered," like becoming civilized, responsible members of village society,Lain,and remaining as such." That would almost always guarantee an eye roll from Lain and Tiadrin flipping him off while planting a big smooch on Lain's cheek while maintaining eye contact

• Lain is canonically the #OG Ruthari shipper.Like Charles seeing Jake and Amy meet for the first time in b99 level shipper. While Tiadrin was the first to notice Ethari subtly flirting at Runaan every time they visited his workshop,he was the one who quickly figured out that his quiet,reserved best friend was developing real and intense feelings for the guy without having realized it himself.

Quite possibly faster and more seriously than Ethari himself,which put him a little on edge because he genuinely didnt want Runaan to get hurt, despite the idiot remaining painfully oblivious to Ethari's advances.But after some nudging in Ethari's case and a couple kicks to his thick skull in Runaan's, he was able to get them to talk and Runaan confessed his feelings and the rest is history —

pspsps I know I should be working on my longer WIPs but have a little snippet from a Ruthari Meeting one-shot that I had to write, specifically For This Moment.

For timeline notes: Runaan is approximately 19 here. Ethari is at least 25, with his horns at full adult size to Runaan's young adult. Runaan is a full-fledged assassin and has been for four years, and Ethari has been a smith for at least a decade, since Moonshadow appear to reach majority at around 15.

The last figure through the door was taller than the others, even Radnaal. Most Moonshadow were slight and lean, even the taller men barely rising to Ethari's shoulders or jaw, but this man was nearly of a height with him. His horns were relatively small, betraying his youth, but arched and twisted proudly up and back like a dragon's, a gentle curve at odds with the severe lines cut by the tattoos across his delicate nose. He had a soft jaw, hair nearly to his trim waist, and his eyes - Oh, his eyes. A pretty, piercing turquoise that caught Ethari's entire attention immediately when they lit upon him, widening at the sight of him. Framed with kohl that highlighted his long lashes, brought to a point that only highlighted how large and soft those eyes were, angled slightly in his youthful, delicate face, sparking with something and widening further as he realized Ethari was watching him move.

We don't talk about this man's EYES enough

Look at them—not only are they a beautiful colour,they are visibly huge. I think they he is described to have 'large,sincere eyes' in the the first book,and if that's true, I am SO here for it. Plus you only get to see their full size when he isn't narrowing them. When Runaan lets himself truly feel the feels,his emotions shine through them.

It just makes it better when you realise that the same person who looks like they can see right through your soul most of the time,also looks like this:

Unlike Ethari,the whites of his eyes at the top and bottom can't be seen at all normally. Plus that flawless,sharp eyeliner job all day every day that only enhances their colour — its no fucking wonder his husband was so taken with them. He even has matching gems embedded into his horncuffs i can't —

Headcanon time!

In a modern au where Rayla and Callum meet as young kids,the thing I love to imagine most is the dynamic between their parents. I mean — guys I'm cracking up just picturing this:

Runaan and Sarai both disapproving of their kid's new friend initially because "Callum,that girl doesn't play nice,you need to be careful" and "Rayla,that boy can't fight and looks too innocent to be trusted,he might be trouble"—

And when they meet its all :

Runaan,watching baby Callum chew on his pencil while scribbling on a wall using a permanent marker,face covered in charcoal smudges and hair looking like its been dipped in a paint can: Your son is certainly rather... gifted.

Sarai,watching baby Rayla scream "gonna get you!" and laugh maniacally as she chases some poor bird across the lawn Naruto style holding a baseball bat: You sure your daughter doesn't need a toddler leash? She is six after all.

Meanwhile there's Ethari and Harrow in the background bonding over embarrassing pictures of their kids on their phones, their respective spouse's disastrous cooking attempts,woodshop. Dad jokes flying in all directions. Numbers exchanged,dinner invites given,plans for play dates for their kids already in session— do you see my vision —

Ethari,carefully guiding Runaan down the stairs,hands covering his eyes: Ok so I know you said to keep it simple this year because apparently I' give you too many pretty things' —

Runaan: You do

Ethari: Yeah but see,I kind of noticed your old weapons vault looks like its gonna fall apart. Besides, that design is so old fashioned, it needs an upgrade anyway —

Runaan:It does I suppose. Though I distinctly remember asking you to repair it. Is this your way of telling me its done?

Ethari,sighing dramatically: Darling, not everything I build can or should be salvaged y'know —I mean who wants a dilapidated, teeny tiny storage unit to keep their husband' s finest creations in these days-?

Runaan: So it still is dilapidated and tiny.

Ethari, stopping in front of a room :.. Yes. But,well,you won't need it anymore.Ta da!

Runaan: Why are we under the workshop —?

Ethari: Like i said,you deserve an upgrade. * Opens the door *Happy anniversary my heart.

Runaan :

Runaan : You..you built this?

Ethari: Yes

Runaan: A- and the weapons... they're all here.

Ethari: Yep!

Runaan: Arranged by type and sub classified by deadliness.

Ethari: Especially the maintenance cupboard. Had that custom made by a certain very talented craftsman,I think he did a good job.

Runaan: There's—there's more than one exit—

Ethari definitely uses that thousand watt,ray of sunshine smile of his to get Runaan to do what he wants. He knows his grump of a husband can't resist it. When Ethari smiles,Runaan can't help but smile back.

But also consider : Runaan using his #long white elf hair TM and pretty, pretty eyes in the same manner to get Ethari to do what he wants.

Husband not taking a break from work? Step needed fixing three days ago?Pesky social gathering he'd rather not attend?Runaan just wants his attention?

Target acquired. Mission plan ready. Cue sudden dramatic entrance, hair flick and swish, arm cross,bicep flex, pout and intense stare. Hands flat on Ethari's workshop desk and leaning forward if required.

Or,on the rare occasion,sad wet cat eyes.

Which usually works like a charm because Ethari cannot resist Runaan's face when he's sad. Or broody. Or anything really.Especially if he's being soft as well. Soft Runaan is among his favourite Runaans.

Headcanon that Ethari had an entire arsenal of weapons made specifically for Runaan and put aside a spare room built under his own workshop just for him. For their first anniversary as a married couple,he had them put up neatly on display and installed a well stocked cabinet of maintenance materials as well.

Different types of armour,weapon grease,deadly little gadgets and everything a good warrior would need—just laid out for him to pick and choose and test with ease and efficiency.

Runaan (who has spent his entire life being moved from one place to another and never had a place to keep all his weapons,or had to share it with the other assassins at the guild storehouse) is completely speechless.

(And if he tears up a little, that's his business.)

Lain and Runaan headcanons because we do not have enough of this friendship:

•Bromance incarnate

• Lain annoyed Runaan SO much when they first met as kids,but in time he proved to be a good friend and Runaan found himself becoming rather fond of him. He still annoys him though. No changing that.

• #Trouble Magnets (its just that one of them actively creates and gets them into trouble while the other tries to avoid it but somehow ends up in the thick of it all the time)

• Had an actual fight one time and spent the next week so upset that their respective significant others got fed up and sent them off on a wild goose chase that of course somehow winded its way into a near death experience ( because #Trouble Magnets) but they made up in the end

• Lain will eat Runaan's hair when he wants to annoy him. Need ideas on how to rage bait the best assassin in Xadia? Look no further.He'll just plonk himself down next to him and rest his chin on his shoulder nonchalantly. Normal bro stuff.Then Runaan will suddenly notice his side tail moving. Then realise that its in Lain's mouth. Lain will end up getting punched in the stomach,but Runaan's expression of absolute horror at his precious hair getting chewed on will forever remain priceless. Totally worth it.

• Bisexual chaos gremlin Lain and Gay Disaster TM Runaan decide go out for a drink.Lain, alcohol making him feel supremely confident in himself, spends the entire time checking out hot people loudly and blatantly,even going up to a couple of them to flirt.

Runaan can only pull his hood lower,cringing internally as his cheeks burn with mortification. All he had wanted was a drink. And then the idiot starts checking guys out for him,and when Runaan doesnt react, hits him with

" Uh i thought you were the gay one"

Runaan drags him out by the scruff of his neck.
