Birthday Blues | Drabble

Nose curling upward, Mizuki smacked her hand against the bed and felt for anything she could drag towards her face. Deciding on an extra pillow, she brought the plush fabric and smashed it against her mouth, groaning inwardly at the bout of loud noise outside. The technomage could understand a person’s fascination with nightlife, but she knew there was a sense of degree that people needed to respect when it came to others.

Not everyone was a night person: Mizuki was one of them.

The girl rolled over and dug into her nightstand’s drawer, allowing her sleepy fingers to feel the various items in there until they finally found the object of their desire. She flopped the pillow beside her as she reached for her phone and plugged in her recently discovered headphones and quickly found some music station to listen to. Taking a deep breath, she slowly exhaled the air with contentment. No longer could she hear the outside noise, and she knew that she was finally going to get some sleep in the post-midnight hour. 

Shifting herself, she slide her arms under her pillow and cuddled it close to her body as her eyes quickly shut. Mizuki sighed as she smiled with her peaceful stupor. But then she frowned and immediately reached for her phone, eyes cracking open to glance at the screen.

“Crap, I missed my birthday,” she muttered, slowly setting the phone back on her table. Mizuki sleepily smacked her lips as she nuzzled her cheek against her pillow. But then blue eyes snapped open, and Mizuki abruptly sat up in the bed.

“Shit!” she loudly exclaimed. “I missed Hina’s birthday!”

Grabbing her own wrench and toolkit, Mizuki nonchalantly picked up her belongings and moved to the other side of the car she was working on. The more distance the better. “I’m not answering a question like that without a lawyer present,” she muttered, before sliding back under her car. 

Eventually, Mizuki decided, she was going to die by Hina’s hand and not some mechanical malfunction.
