Adventures with the Chinese medical system! I’ve probably had more unwell days than heathy days in China so far (chalk it up to travel, adjusting to sleep schedule, rigorous work schedule and being in contact with hundreds of germy kids in the most populated city in the world) and it finally took its toll - in the form of a bad tonsillitis infection!

Disney does provide us with great medical coverage (my insurance card was sent to the wrong location, of course, as I’ve come to accept that nothing will go right on Disney English’s administrative end for me 😉) and there are many hospitals that offer English-speaking doctors and western medicine. So I hauled my sick butt to Landseed Hospital, recommended by another trainer, which was very nice and even had an awesome free coffee/hot chocolate machine (I have priorities ok?)

My appointment was delayed due to my lack of insurance card but they called the insurance company for me and had it sorted out. You do need to bring your passport to the doctor as well. Anyway after 30 minutes of waiting the doctor saw me, took one look at my tonsils and laughed because they were swollen like baseballs and basically said “Yep they’re infected.” yay! I also had cold symptoms and a bit of a cough so he literally prescribed me medication for every symptom I had.

So back out at the waiting room the nurse comes with 5 different bags with the medications’ instructions - an antibiotic for the infection, pills for sore throat, pills for runny nose, two different cough medications… though I can’t help but feel like all but the antibiotics could have been acquired in a simple over-the-counter trip to CVS if I’d been back in the US (why did I forget to pack DayQuil?!!!!!)

Doctor gave me a note in Chinese and English for my employer telling me I needed 3 days off to recover (I took two - gotta be back at work!) and I’m glad I did take those days off to really make sure I was better.

So after the doctor I went home and rested - didn’t get much sleep because our heat was broken on the coldest weekend Shanghai’s had in 30 years but that’s another story. 😘
