“I enjoy a good dose of guilt with my drink, as much as any man, but I can’t help but feel that any apologies I might offer would do little to absolve me in your eyes. But, please—any reparations you have in mind, do let me know. I have quite the penchant for futile attempts at redemption, you know. On that note—I wanted to apologize for my bold comments about the Champion. I had no idea you both were… intimately acquainted. I would have been much more discreet. I just wanted to assure you of no untoward intentions.”
“If your intention was to curry my favor, it’s a wonder that someone who claims to understand himself as an inordinately charming person would think that making mention of your attraction to my husband would win you any approval with me. Stay away from him. If you please. Though I have full faith that you would be any great threat, even if we weren’t together. You’re simply not his type.”

“Why, Fenris. You scowled at me for three seconds less that time. Could it be you’re warming up to me? It’s the Pavus charm, isn’t it? None are immune, I’m afraid. Except old busybodies and the odd Templar. Would you like a drink while you’re here?”
“My liver’s already compromised, I’m sure. Whatever igneous swill passes for a drink to you will surely end me, I’m certain. And how very like you to think that you can insinuate yourself into anyone’s good graces. I haven’t forgotten for a second what you are, your pedigree, your station. It was your people who instilled that in me. If you forget.”

Woah wait hold up, who put this on my computer?
Haven’t a clue how it got on there…

He was pacing again. It roused her from sleep, light as it was, not unlike the gentle metronome of the a clock. She lifted her head from the down pillow, watching his silhouette in the glow of the fire as it passed between the heavy brocade of her bed curtains.
“Were you dreaming again?” she asked finally, voice low in the dark. “Come back to bed.”
His steps halted, feet stilled at once upon hearing her dulcet voice. Dreaming was not quite what had plagued him. But her concern for him had dulled the anxious roiling for a moment, tamped down by his selflessness for her well-being and comfort. “Yes, of course,” he agreed, slipping in behind her, fitting himself to her perfect lithe frame. He laid a kiss just behind her ear, half an apology, as a tattooed arm curled about her slender waist. “I didn’t mean to wake you, álainn.”

“The last time I didn’t open the door for you, I ended up at the county jail getting you out of the drunk tank four hours later. Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answer to, a ghrá. Do you want me to call you a cab?”
“Don’t call me that,” he snapped, pushing his way inside. “You don’t get to call me that anymore. If you think that’s gonna make me sweet on you, it just pisses me off, honestly. But that’s a ‘yes,’ right? I don’t want to know the answer, so it’s a ‘yes.’ Got it. You know how I know? Some asshole showed up wearing your perfume. Your fucking fancy perfume you get custom made in Paris or whatever. It’s been weeks, daisy. Fucking weeks. You know, I was just starting to level out. Get used to you not being there. I was just starting to be okay, and then that fucking chodestone walks in smelling like you, and I just— honestly? I feel like I hate you. I feel like ... you took away the one good thing I had. And you couldn’t even let me keep my memories of it. You couldn’t even let me keep loving you. You broke my heart, but that wasn’t enough, was it? You had to really twist that knife. Like really fucking destroy me. I hope it was fun for you. Because your new boyfriend’s in love with my sister. In case you didn’t know.”

“You can’t keep stopping by like this, Fen.”
“Then stop opening the door. I don’t know why you do. You’re already seeing someone, aren’t you?”
Aerith
“You’ve got no business throwing my pillow talk in my face,” she warned, shoving his head away with a hand on his forehead. “Keep that up and I’ll make you sit on the stoop when I have boys over.”
She chewed idly at a bagel fresh from the toaster, then gestured at him with the chewed stump. “They’re not all bad,” she said. “Gladio wasn’t, anyway. And a few others. I thought you liked Kolya, for instance.” She shrugged, mostly to herself. “Kolya’s a great boyfriend, but a terrible customer.”
“That’s two questionably passable men out of ... like way too many,” he laughed, gesturing with his spoon. “Kolya’s a deadbeat. Face it. What’s what kid done? Besides try to smoke his own weight of your free shit. It’s like you’re dating the straight version of me, except twice as pathetic, and with a bitch baby habit. Honestly. Everyone knows the most respectable assholes are alcoholics, anyways.”
He was joking, but he prepared himself for Aerith’s displeasure at his self-deprecating humor. “I’d probably stay out there all night,” Fenris admitted, shrugging. And you know how cold it gets at night in the desert. Shivering and shit like an orphan. It’s not like I have anywhere else to go. But yeah, pick your boyfriends over me. That’s not gonna hurt my feelings.” He looked over at her and grinned. “Nah. Just kidding. But seriously, if you want your space while you’re getting railed by guys I hate, I don’t mind fucking off or a night or week or however long. You need your space, too. You’re already doing me a solid letting me stay with you. Don’t wanna overstay my welcome.”

He remembered the way. Simple as shit. Take the N train from his shithole studio apartment in Queens, across the river to where he’d emerge right by the southern edge of Central Park. And right in front of her apartments. Which looked less foreboding as they did last night, lit up in their crystalline brilliance to stave off the dark of night like a glittering jewel.
His skin still smelled of the floral bath oils she’d poured for him, which sat strangely sweet with the scent of leather from his old jacket, and the smoke that adorned his hair from far too vehement a bad habit. It was that scent he took solace in, focusing on that as a touchstone as he ignored all the fancy business types and richies parading past him, looking at him like he was lying in wait to mug someone. Because Christ, if he didn’t look the part.
And there she was. Her golden hair caught the sun like a some new-polished coin, brilliant and burnished and beautiful. Dressed to the nines, as only he’d expect her to. While he looked like some schlemazel asking for spare change. But Fenris caught her stride and fell into step beside her, hands shoved in his pockets as he adopted an animatedly haughty pace. Astoria, Queens meeting Waldorf-Astoria. It was fucked, but Fenris didn’t care.
“Don’t mind me,” he said airily, a fantastic, shit-eating grin on his lips. “Just thought I’d check up on you. Make sure you weren’t too shook up about lat night. Not that ... I wanted to see you again or anything. Pure business. Yeah.”
Aerith
“Well, you’re the favorite,” she said easily, setting the cereal box aside and tugging up his sagging PJ pants to his hips. “No one else gets to stay over. So they think they’re all the side hoes. It doesn’t help that we do share a bed. And you’re here at all hours. Imagine coming over for a 3 a.m. booty call and finding you on the sofa watching murder mysteries.”
“I’m the favorite?” he asked, his face scrunching like curdled milk to denote his exaggerated offense. “I’m not the one you were moaning like a cow over the other night. ‘No one fills me up like you do.’ Christ. I never say shit like that to Hawke, and sometimes I feel like I’m giving birth to an entire arm.”
He grinned at her then, taking another pointed spoonful of her cereal. “Maybe if you didn’t abandon half of them to watch murder mysteries with the weird guy n the couch at 3 AM, they wouldn’t be so salty. Or maybe you just need better taste in men all around.” Fenris laughed sharply. “Nevermind. Like that’s gonna happen. Hell hasn’t frozen over. Pigs haven't started flying. The Lions haven’t won the Super Bowl.” He laid a milky kiss on the tip of her nose. “Face it. I’m the best thing in your bed. Regularly, at least.”

“I don’t think he much liked seeing you here. Especially in your PJ’s and bedhead.”
“Yeah?” he asked, his mouth full of cornflakes, a dribble of milk wiped away from the corner just in time. “Tough titties. Maybe he shouldn’t learn to be so jealous. Why are all your boyfriends jealous of me? Shouldn’t they be jealous of each other?”
