Conflict isn’t in this man’s NATURE ( he avoids it as much as possible ) , eyes MEETING his own only sparingly , unsettled. Graves can UNDERSTAND that his very existence conjures NIGHTMARES from the dark , remnants of a death SENTENCE that his lips had DECREED so mercilessly. It’s why the OFFER of an open hand of familiarity catches him OFF guard within one name but he passes it off as a POLITE gesture —- Mister Scamander will do for HIM ; they weren’t friends ( they NEVER could be ). Dark eyes scrutinize the magizoologist who finally rises , HUMBLE but not meek.
He lets the ALTRUIST of magical creatures ramble about them ; it’s the LEAST he can do so he listens attentively about the clabbert that he SHOULD confiscate but won’t. He’s read the detailed REPORTS of Mister Scamander’s run-ins with MACUSA and the debt OWED when an ingenious solution was found to obliviate the ENTIRE city. Graves had been impressed that the WORLD of magic had been protected by the very creatures they HUNTED out of fear , no different from how the no-majs TREATED them.
“ No , I’m not here to take the creature from you , ” he REASSURES cooly. “ I took you as someone who didn’t make presumptions of others so easily but you’ve proved me wrong. ” A bitter RETORT that typically would have been held back but this was the WIZARD who had noticed when no one had. Expectations were for the WEAK but he couldn’t help it , not when he stood at the PEAK of it all but the acrid taste of disappointment always weighs HEAVILY on his tongue —- he should be used to it by now , HIM out of all people.
There’s a cold WINTER that settles onto his sharply set features , his ABYSMAL dark eyes most of all ( an ever so subtle CHANGE ). He’s about to ask why the mazigoologist is BACK in New York when the easily distracted man APPROACHES the wall nearby , Graves following the line of sight to RECOGNIZE the symbol he’s seen before. MACUSA relentlessly tracked DOWN smugglers to keep magical beasts properly CONTAINED and away from no-maj eyes.
“ Thank you for pointing out all the obvious , Mister Scamander , ” he REPLIES airily from behind , wand DRAWN from his cloak pocket. “ But I can take it from here. ” Instead , the creature expert is already DISAPPEARING through the doorway. He should have cast the FULL BODY curse when he had half the mind to. Silver TENDRILS ghost out of the TIP of his wand at his wordless COMMAND , his patronus gracefully BOUNDING out into the night sky. UNLIKE the careless going magizoologist , he wasn’t one to dive into danger WITHOUT a plan.
It doesn’t take LONG for him to find Scamander , completely distracted and VULNERABLE to an attack. Smugglers never came quietly , DIRTY fighters who would do anything to evade ARREST.
“ Do you have no sense of danger in you whatsoever ? ” he SNARLS quietly , gaze skimming over the ROWS of cages then back to the man whose heart could EASILY get him killed one day. “ You need to get out of here until this area’s safe. ” As useless as he knew the DEMAND was , he had to try. If there was anything he had DRAWN from the reports , it was that Newt SCAMANDER valued these creatures’ LIVES over his own.
❝I do presume many things Mister Graves but I didn’t do it without reasoning to it. After all, Tina did bring me in for having a creature since it’s illegal to have them... Also for breaking the Statute of Secrecy.❞ He felt the need to defend himself to what Graves said, ❝Your assumption of me would have been wrong from the beginning don’t you think?❞ Sparing a glance toward Graves in hopes he hadn’t annoyed him, ❝I did, after all, postulate that someone was wearing you face whenever Grindelwald sentenced me and Tina to death without a trial. With me being a foreigner it would have caused an international incident and that wouldn’t have been something the Director of Magical Security would just ignore.❞ Feeling that he had said everything that he needed to say he ignored Graves presence in favor of finding the creatures that need his help.
After opening the hidden door he had only one thing in his mind, help the creatures. He did notice that the once dark place he entered now had light but he chose to ignore it, as helpful as it was he had no need to figure out where it came from. The first cage he found himself in was that of Augurey and after promising it to be safe with him the Augurey calmed down and allowed him to take off its mouthpiece and it thankfully didn’t start to cry at him. That means it’s not about to rain at least, Newt reminded himself of his notes over the creature. Touching the creature gently he checked for any wounds and finding none he pulled his suitcase close and opened it to allow the Augurey in, ❝Go on it’ll be best to be in there. Safest place I can keep you in for now.❞ With the creature eyeing him with distrust it finally gave in and entered his suitcase. Closing it he heard someone talk to him and looking up he noticed it was Graves.
❝I don’t believe it’s necessary.❞ It is very much so but with Newt if there is danger and a creature needs his help he’ll ignore the danger to help the creature. It would most likely be the cause of his death. Rising up with his suitcase at hand he walked outside of the cage and looked at Graves then at their surrounding. ❝I haven’t noticed any smugglers in here so no worries.❞ When he said that he was walking towards the next cage to free the creature and that's when he heard footsteps that were definitely human and with a quick motion of his wand being brought out of his coat he spoke two spells as he shifted his wand to perform both spells, ❝Stupify. Incarcerous.❞ The smuggler he aimed it at was not laying down unconscious and tied up. Entering the next cage he found Salamanders with many of them showing signs of Scaling rot and thought back to his suitcase to remember that he thankfully did have some chili fruit that he could easily powder down to rub onto the affect parts of the Salamanders, ❝One moment please.❞ He told the Salamanders that were eyeing him curiously as he opened his suitcase and walked into it. Walking inside he found himself in the small entrance that held the food and supplies he used for the creatures and himself as well.
Opening a drawer he charmed to keep the food from rotting unless pulled out of the drawer he grabbed a handful of chilis and put then in a bowl. Needing to be quick for the Salamanders in need of it, he conjured a spell to make the crushing of the chilis to powder quick. Allowing the pestle to move at a speed that if done by hand would be difficult to do he pulled it out of the bowl and placed it aside. Placing his wand back inside his coat he walked up the stairs with the bowl at hand. Kneeling down in front of the tensed Salamanders he smiled at them, genuine and something he can’t usually do if it was to humans. ❝ I’ll like to help you with the illness you have. It’s easy to heal I just have to rub the chili powder on you a couple of time. Will you let me do that.❞ Voice soft and calm in hopes of not scaring the creatures they stared at him with eyes filled with distrust and pain and it hurt Newt to see them like that. They don’t deserve to be in cages. After a couple of seconds of the Salamanders sizing him up one with the illness took a step closer and moved to allow him to touch their rotting scales. He grabbed enough powder into his hand and began rubbing onto the affected area of the first Salamander that came up to him. That’s when he remembered someone was telling him to leave since it wasn’t safe.
Eyes drifted around to find Graves and when he spotted him he said, ❝I’ll rather stay here and help the Salamanders and any other creatures that need my help. It’s not safe for them either and I’m quite sure we’ve established I don’t care for danger if it means leaving creatures in it.❞ He was a creature expert, what was he to do outside of the warehouse? Newt had already tended to the creatures in his suitcase so they had enough food to last them a few hours. Turning his attention back to the Salamanders he decided it was best to try and not argue (he was most likely going to fail) with a man who can arrest him. It became a routine of rubbing the parts that were rotting on the Salamanders and then directing them to his suitcase that he changed the entrance to allow the creature into the environment best suited for them. Whenever he was finished with all the Salamanders he got up with his now closed suitcase to find Graves.
❝When your Auror’s come here will they try to take the creatures out of the cages? It’s might scare the creatures if they suddenly barge into the cage and attempt to take them out so I’ll try to get to all the creatures myself.❞ Newt wasn’t going to ask for permission since he doubted that Graves would give him any.
