“Daddy, can you make sure to add extra sprinkles on top of my pancakes? I want the unicorn ones.”
“Of course, Princess. Any more requests you have for me?”
“I want lemonade with my pancakes!” She crossed her little arms and knitted her eyebrows together.
“Sorry, Angel, but you know your mom has strong rules. No sugary drinks with pancakes.” Nanami gripped the pan, making sure not to burn the pancakes.
“But Mom doesn’t have to know,” she said, rolling her eyes.
“Your mom knows everything.” A small giggle escaped his lips as he wiped the sweat from his brow after standing in front of the hot stove. “Listen, Princess, why don’t you grab a water bottle from the fridge?”
“I DON’T WANT WATER! IT’S NASTY, DAD!” she yelled, waving her hands dramatically.
Nanami placed the now-overcooked pancake on a plate and turned around.
“I understand. What about milk? I loved having milk with pancakes growing up.”
“Yes, milk tastes better than water.”
Before Nanami could even give her directions, she bolted to the fridge to grab the container. After setting it on the counter, she placed her small step stool in front of the cabinet and reached for her favorite princess cup to pour her milk into it.
She stuck her tongue out in concentration as she lifted the heavy container with both little hands.
A second later, milk spilled across the counter.
Nanami swiftly turned around to hurry to his daughter when he spotted three tears falling from her eyes.
“Daddy, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to spill the milk.”
“Sweetheart, don’t you cry. Accidents happen, and it’s okay.”
He scooped her up in his arms.
She rested her tiny head on his shoulder. Her little hand gripped his shirt.
While he held her, he grabbed a paper towel and quickly wiped up the mess. A small wet patch soaked through his shirt.
“Can I get lemonade since I dropped the milk?”
Nanami couldn’t say no now.
“Yes, but do not tell your mom.”
Nanami smiled down at his daughter, still in awe that she was his.
