Entering the attic
My first time venturing into my attic, my name was still Lucy. My sister Phoebe and I were hiding from shoveling, our lot for being the only one of the five children who could lift a shovel at that time. I suppose it was circa 2011 because I know that's when I found my first artifact: a little lavender book entitled "Welcome to the world" with a sleeping lamb on its forehead. It was like a diary my mom wrote about my first two years of life. This book, which had every possible mark of innocence, was a thorn in my sister's side. For her it was the conclusive proof that my parents loved me more. In my opinion, there is no favorite child, or if there ever was, it was very well hidden because I never felt it. Many times during my childhood we asked my mother who was her favorite, and she always answered with the same answer: “I hate you all equally” I think this book is the result of being the first, not the favorite.
On Lucy’s Birth- It was about 7pm on my Birthday, October 10th, a Sunday, and I was fielding calls from friends (i.e.- Jon Simon, Felicia Henderson) when my water broke. I was downstairs, on the basement couch, and I was complaining bitterly that no one had made a big deal out of my birthday. We had just moved to Maplewood a month and a half ago, my Bobe Sara was staying with us, and Ari had been working very hard. (Bobe Sara hadn’t actually seen Ari until her 3rd day staying with us) Ari and I decided that it probably wasn’t my water and that we should just go to sleep. In the morning, Columbus Day, I offered to drive Ari into Manhattan as he needed to do a couple things at the office. I dropped him off, found parking and went up to my office with Bobe Sara, who was very embarrassed to be coming to my office wearing shorts. I did some work and called Ana, who promptly invited us over for tea. Again, Bobe Sara was very embarrassed about her shorts. We had something to drink and some delicious cookies, and Ari called to say he would be on his way shortly. At this time, I decided I really should call the doctor about the fact that my water had, in fact, broken. Victoria, his receptionist and nurse put me through to him and he said that I needed to be checked out either by the attending physician at New York-Cornell or by him at his Queens office. I opted to be seen by my doctor, not realizing this would mean that I would soon be admitted at NYHQ! I decided that to keep everyone from panicking, should this be a false alarm
Lucy loves the bath! She has loved every bath since the 2nd one she had- she actually cries when you take her out.
Lucy went through an ugly period at about 6 weeks, complete with baby acne. Fortunately, it soon passed and she was beautiful for her first trip to Florida at 2 months.
Today is Ari’s birthday and, as Lucy would tell you, Tu B’Shvat. We just came back from 5 weeks in Florida (Lucy, Phoebe+me- Ari came down for 1 week ) where Lucy had a ball with Bobe Pichi + Zeide Moto. She took swimming lessons, looked for shells on the beach, went to Disney World and hung out with much older friends at yoga class (i.e.- Emma 12 and Melanie 10). Lucy’s vocabulary has skyrocketed- she informed one night that “I’m big- I drink soda with my friends.” When I asked her when she does this, as I am always with her, she replied “sometimes.”
