“OwwwwwfuuuUUCK!” Cato yelled, features twisting in pure agony. Nef’s fingers had never felt more like paws than they did as they were digging into the skin of his ears, and he began smacking her hands with his own as a plea to let go. He could imagine just how red they were getting, which was just about one of the worst things for Cato. He’d enter the Ravenclaw common room, everyone would see his burning ears, and they’d all know what happened. “Nef, please!” Cato was practically wailing, even attempting to impersonate a whimpering dog for he assumed that would make her have mercy on him. “NEF, COME ON!”
Thank all the spirits, and deities, and higher power entities that existed for the two ladies (his saviours) for ripping Nef off of him. Immediately, his hands flew to rub his ears, forming a pout on his lips as he whined, “I thought you loved me?” Even at such a grave and dire time, Cato couldn’t help but snigger to himself a little whilst his feet continued to retreat. However, as Nef started screaming once again, his entire body tensed up and was almost too slow in reacting to the flying bed. “Doooon’t!” Cato screamed, grabbing large objects and placing them in front of him as he “Don’t let her at me! She’s wild! Too wild! Hold her back! Pomfrey, what are you doing?!” Desperately, he threw his hands up in the air, before flipping out and running off once Nef started charging at him. “Don’t show me what’s up! I’m still technically dying you know! I thought you loved me!” Cato screamed, before an idea struck him. He came to an abrupt halt, turning round to face Nef. “I love you, you love me, let’s just hug it out!” Opening his arms wide, he attempted to throw himself at Nef, even though if that meant getting ripped limb by limb.
Shoulders rigid at the surprise display of affection, Nefetari came to a halt. This boy would be the death of her, she thought defeatedly, tense muscles slacking. Just because Cato had deprived her of killing him with a hug, though, didn’t mean she wasn’t angry anymore. She was furious. ( And it was lucky, because it allowed the perfect distraction from having to think about the underlaying reasons of why she was so affected by the stupid prank. ) Nef shrugged Cato off her and instead of his skull, took up a pillow left like rubble from her brief rage on the floor —- and then tore it to shreds with her bare hands, aggressively throwing the feathers at the floor and at Cato. “Fuck you, Cato” she spat, “no, I don’t want to fucking hug it out.”
Somewhere, deep down, Nefetari had been able to discern that she didn’t actually want to murder her best friend —- which was much more than she could say for anyone else had they made her look so weak in front of other students. Even now, involuntarily frustrated tears teased at her eyes, a completely humiliating and unfamiliar sensation for her. She couldn’t find the humour in the situation, she couldn’t find a joke to make. All Nefetari could feel was anger ( that —- that was a familiar feeling, but never one she expected to come as a result of this. ) “WHY would you do that? WHY would you let me think that I was losing—- how could,” she lost her words, possibly due to a lack of being able to express herself. Quickly wiping away a stray tear that escaped her eye, Nef stepped back and then around Cato.
“Go tell Isabelle how much you love her, you dick. Hell, why not try Septima, my cousin, while you’re at it? Because what I have for you right now certainly isn’t fucking love.” ( Where did that come from? ) She shoved passed him, muttering on her way out of the hospital ward about fucking being made to fucking cry in front of fucking students and involving herself with fucking human boys being a fucking mistake. “Don’t look at me or I’ll shove your foot through your own arse, little first year fucking git!!!” Her shouts were heard fading out into the hallway.
Regret. Regret. Regret.Regret. There were so much regret compared to the atomically small amount of amusement. Nef was so close to him. Seeing her tears was one thing, but actually feeling them soaking through his shirt was driving him crazy. Cato wasn’t aware that he was capable of feeling so much guilt. At least she loved him. She said it twice: ‘I love you, too’ and ‘I love you Cato’. Had there not been so much despair in her voice, Cato would have wanted to remember this forever. This was enough, though. All he wanted was the confirmation. There was no way Zero could get in between Nef and him now, he was sure. So what, they might go on a couple of dates? Perhaps Zero would make Nef happy in ways Cato couldn’t. Romantically and sexually… which wouldn’t be a problem. At all.
All of a sudden, he felt himself rising from the ground, and he started screaming internally like a maniac. Clearly, Cato hadn’t thought this through. Nef was taking him to the hospital wing. What else was she going to fucking do? He waited for his eruption of thoughts to calm down before starting… ‘Dear God… If you exist, if you really exist, please can you do me a huge favour and just knock me out, or even actually kill me for a little while then give me back? It’ll be like a cute refund, no receipt. Or, if you’re feeling extra nice, knock Nef out. Knock both of us out! Please, can you just do something so I don’t end up in the hospital wing. I’m really sorry for any bad thing I’ve ever done. I never meant it. It was just for fun! What won’t be fun is when Nef finds out that I lied about this. Did you see her, God? She was crying. Full on adult dog tears. She can never find out, so whenever you’re ready…” Cato was lying on the bed now, fighting the temptation to open his eyes just a little bit, though he had let a smirk accidentally slip when she rushed into the room crying for some assistance. Listening to Madam Pomfrey and Nef converse was like listening to nails on a chalk board. “Anytime now, dude… Come on, please. FUCKING PLEASE! Sorry, sorry, but please, God. I’ll be so good from now on.” And then he heard it. That exposure. A nurse having approached the two women and informing them of Cato’s good health. Immediately, he jumped up from the bed, exclaiming hysterically with his hands thrown in the air, “I’m alive!” Cato immediately rolled off the bed, pushing it forward to serve as a barrier between he and Nef, but also standing on his toes ready to take off just in case she lunged over the bed. “Hi…“ He said shakily, stretching his timid smile into a wide grin as he forced a nervous laughter out of himself “‘Sup?” .
Priding herself on acute senses, rare it was that it took something this long to settle in for her. She heard the nurses first. “... It seems Cato’s fine? We can’t find anything wrong with him at present, Nefetari.” For a moment, puffy eyes flickered back and forth between the two women and his body laying atop the bunk in confusion. Surely they had missed something? ‘It’s happening,’ he’d told her himself. She’d felt him going limp in her arms, she’d felt a panic that was incomparable. And then Cato sat up, a simple ‘sup’ and laughter rolling out of his mouth. Nefetari stared at him. It was a prank? It was a prank. It was a prank. “You... fucking? You... fucking IDIOT!!! ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!” Alas, despite Cato’s attempts to preserve his safety, Nefetai had lunged across the bed to collect his ears in a tight, twisting pinch.
“You pull THAT and FUCKING ‘SUP’ IS WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY FOR YOURSELF?! YOU IDIOT. YOU FUCKING IDIOT.” Nefetari couldn’t remember a single moment in her entire life when she’d felt so much anger, tugging at her best friend’s ears till they went pink. Relief for his not actually being on the brink of death was entirely forgotten. Madame Pomfrey and the other nurse were by them almost immediately, trying to detangle her vice grip on the boy’s ears. “I’m going to kill him?” She said, almost calmly. Before catching another glimpse at his dumb face and the fury took over again as the two women finally managed to pull Nefetari away, “FUCKING LET ME AT HIM!!!!!!!!” She barked, sending out a kick that effectively flipped the bed in his direction. Managing to free herself of the restraint, Nef shoved the bed aside and again she was charging for him. “I'LL SHOW YOU WHAT'S UP!!!"
Stalia being cute as fuck with one another (◠‿◠✿)
This was a huge mistake. Cato couldn’t quite remember why he decided this would be a good idea in the first place. It was only funny for the first few seconds, as he acted out his final fatal headache whilst Nef started panicking herself. When he could hear the terror in her voice, and he knew… she had really fallen for it. It was only until he peered through his fingers to catch her expression, when Cato began to regret throwing these dramatics. Nefetari Greyback was crying! Cato had made Nef cry! His best friend was crying! It really wasn’t as funny as making other people cry. It wasn’t funny at all. This realization threw him into a state of frenzy, where he couldn’t quite discern whether he was feeling guilt, or fear, or shock. He tried to bury his face into his hands, not wanting to see her tears. They made Cato feel odd, as if he really was dying. However, Nef brought his face up into her hand, and everything seemed too real. He had to play along. Heavy lids, weak neck with a couple of painful groans thrown in here and there… Cato tried to distract himself from Nef’s emotions by keeping up the act. “Love you, Nef…” Cato whispered gravelly, feigning his pain as he extended a weak and unsteady hand out. He wanted to remind her of the important things before she caught on that it was just a prank. “We’re best friends for life…” Truthfully, it was beginning to scare him for when this day would truly come. There would never be a time where he’d be ready to part with Nef. At her sudden burst of anger, however, Cato took advantage of her attention placed elsewhere, and swiftly decided to fall limp in her arms before rolling his eyes backwards. Yes, to avoid the mess of a fake death prank, Caius Cato Crouch decided to fake pass out.
“I love you, too,” she blurted, burying her face into his chest and slinking her arms around his neck as tears turned into weeping. They were meant to have so much more time than this —- Nef couldn’t even begin to fathom a life in which Cato no longer existed. She’d lost people before. Parents. But the faint and distant memory of grief for two people she hardly remembered from her childhood was nothing. Not when faced with the prospect of losing the rude, inconsiderate and reckless idiot of a boy that meant more to her than any other single person in the world. She had Sydney and Septima, sure, but until Cato, she’d been ultimately alone. He was her person, her idiot. “I love you Cato,” she breathed, pressing her forehead to his as he went limp. And for the easily the worst and most terrifying split second in her life, Nefetari thought that was it. That he was gone. But his breath, slowed and shallow, was still present and all she could do was cry more. She didn’t even care if she looked weak in front of the other students —- she’d rather everyone in the world think her weak and pathetic, including Greyback, than lose him. Nef didn’t feel like she could be strong ever again. But she willed herself to pull back from him. Then forced herself to a stand, dragging Cato upwards with her. It wasn’t particularly hard for her to lift him off his feet, carrying his rather light frame in her arms. “Move out of my fucking way!!” She barked at onlookers in her path whom quickly parted, allowing her to hurriedly storm past. It was barely a minute later when she’d made it to the hospital wing with him —- “help!!! Please,” she cried, “you have to help him.” Madam Pomfrey appeared almost immediately, directing Nefetari to place Cato on the closest free bed. She kneeled down by his side, fingers linking with his as she shakily answered any questions asked about what had happened and his condition whilst Pomfrey examined him.
Cato’s smile faltered at Nef’s unusual response. It wasn’t the same when Nef wasn’t enthusiastic about it as he was. The progression he’d made with Isabelle even seemed to have lost a little purpose without Nef being fun about it. Brows furrowed, Cato glanced over at Nef, analyzing the big gap between them. “Yeah, I stopped doing things with Septima ages ago. She didn’t want a relationship, remember? So weird to think that I did my first sexual shit with your cousin. Hey, I’m not just… onto Isabelle. I have a crush on her! I like her? I think we’d make a good couple.” Cato deliberately rambled on as an excuse to slowly start walking closer next to Nef, shooting her a boyish smirk as he nudged her shoulder. At the topic of Zero pestering Nef for a date, for some reason, Cato panicked. “Really? You should say yes. it’s been a while since you went on a date. Who’s Zero, though?” There wasn’t one person within the walls of Hogwarts that didn’t know of Zero Carraway. As if that wasn’t enough, Cato suddenly reached out for Nef’s shoulder. “Nef, it’s happening…” An all too melodramatic tone was used. With a hand pressed against his temples, Cato abruptly dropped to the floor as he wailed out in over-exaggerated agony. “Oh, Nef, it hurts!”
Stop it, Nef. So weird to think that I did my first sexual shit with your cousin. So weird to think that I did my first sexual shit with your cousin. So weird to think that I did my first sexual shit with your cousin. Stop thinking about it, she urged herself after having repeated the sentence in her head the third time. “Not just onto her,” she nodded once slowly, “a crush —- my bad, then.” This time, Nefetari put a little more effort into her attempt at enthusiasm, “totally, you’d make a fucking awesome couple. Lord Cato and his Lady Princess, right? Nice.” Too invested in her own thoughts, unusual for the girl who was always so in the moment, Nef didn’t even pick up on his drawing closer. “Some loser, he is kinda’ cute though. I can’t fathom why someone like him would want to date a werewolf —- that’s gotta hurt the reputation. But I think I’ll say yes,” she agreed, keeping pace. Though an abrupt shout and a grip on her shoulder had Nefetari whipping around, her heart threatening to jump out of her throat. Her expression twisted in panic, eyes stinging unfamiliarly with uncharacteristic tears, “Cato?!” She dropped by his side in less then a second, her hands flinging up to her head in distress, “no, no, no.” For a moment she fumbled helplessly, clueless as to how to help. He was in pain. And then her hand found his chest, the other moving up to desperately cup his cheek as tears begun streaming down her own, “Cato, tell me what to do?! Please!!” The girl whimpered shakily, looking over his features with terror and worry, “please, Cato. I can’t lose you!! I was going to fix this. I can fix this, please don’t die.” Stray students who happened to also be walking through the hallway had stopped to crowd and watch, one of them even stepping forward, igniting Nefetari’s anger. “Get the fuck away from him!!” She lashed out, wiping her dampened cheeks on her shoulder.
“What?!” Confusion tightened Cato’s brows, pursing his lips slightly as he found himself taking slight offense to Nef’s comment. Suddenly, he began sniffing himself. Since when did she find his smell anything other than pleasant? Stupid ghost. “At least I don’t look fucking weird! Wait, actually, I probably smell of Isabelle. We took a quick nap during lunch, and she smells like a princess. Lord Cato making mad movements, you proud? Anyway, smell me in a couple of hours, Nef. I think Milo’s throwing you off your game.” He smiled brightly at her, rubbing the side of her arm with his hand comfortingly. He noticed her fists and drew his hand back. “Is it the…” He glanced down at her stomach, raising his brows. “Whatever, wanna get some food? Let’s go Hogsmeade. I’ll treat ya real good, honey.”
“So,” she swallowed, “proud, hahahahahaha,” Nef swallowed a second time, gratingly, voice unusually loud. They cuddled like she and Cato did? Did Isabelle even know that he liked to be the little spoon? Did he like being with Isabelle more than he did her? Nef screwed up her nose at herself, why was she being so stupid. “Milo, right.” She nodded, “yeah. Yeah, that should fix this. I’m gonna shove my face.” The girl begun walking, keeping an unusual distance between herself and Cato as she did. “So… you and Septima, that’s like, not a thing anymore, right? You’re just… onto Isabelle?” She crossed her arms over her chest, “and hey, y’know Zero Carraway? Quidditch guy? He keeps talking to me out of fucking nowhere. I think… I think he’s gonna ask me out.” Nefetari quickly mentioned something else, so it didn’t seem like she was lingering on the topic of Cato’s girls.
“Fucking hell, Nef, do you need some horse tranquilizers? Don’t growl at me because you hate Milo, he’s the only decent ghost in this school.” When she made the barrier, Septima attempted to pull her back, “Honestly, he’s nicer than half of the student body is, including me, – … why do you hate ghosts so much again?”
“Yes, please —- I’d rather be knocked out than conscious around him. Actually, no, fuck that. I don’t trust him. Who cares if he’s decent? Ghosts are souls, right? So one day who’s to say he’s not going to want a host to stick his weird ass into?” Nefetari shivered, “ugh, yuck. I am so not up for sharing my body with a werewolf and a ghost. Two's company, three is Nef's worst nightmare. Nope, no fucking way, not me, Septima. Not. Me.”
I love that everybody else has to get naked except for me. I’m usually the one that - you know.
Isabelle shook her head, crossing her arms across her chest in hopes of hiding even just a bit of the dress as Nef took no mercy in taking her apart. “I – don’t think I’m daft…I mean I guess you would know but I,” She swallowed hard, trying to force herself to not be so sensitive to harsh words, “I don’t think he likes me like that. H-he jokes and is nice to me but that doesn’t mean that he likes me. He likes you? That’s what I’ve always thought. –Are..are you okay? I don’t know what I’ve done but I’ve never meant to make you angry with me or hurt you feelings?”
“Stop that sad face, please,” Nef shook her head vigorously, “I hate it. Stop. I’ll actually pay you if you stop,” her eyebrows flew up at the suggestion that Cato liked her, her expression screwing up in utter disgust. “Yuck. No, God, no. Why would you say that, Isabelle? Why would you say something so gross?” The girl shivered as if someone had touched her with something disgusting, “ugh, so gross, Isabelle, you should be ashamed. He’s like, like a brother or some kind of weird distant relative or something. Maybe like a fifth cousin. Anyways, the point is me and Cato are nope. He doesn’t even see me as a girl —- more like a... like a pet, I entertain him when he’s bored. That’s it. That is sooooo it.” Her features contorted in frustration and disappointment looking upon Isabelle, “am I okay? No!! No, I’m not okay. I mean, who is this nice? Like, you’re so fucking nice. And you smell so good. You smell like sunshine and pink. So!! Nice!!” Nefetari had worked herself up to the point of shouting, touching a distressed hand to her forehead. “I’m going to blow chunks,” she spat, raising a hand to cover her mouth. Nef turned on her heel and begun to navigate through the Halloween party crowd —- pausing only to shove a first year out of her way and to the floor before disappearing from sight.
Her eyebrows rose at Nefetari’s laugh, smiling up at her despite how weird she was acting towards her. It wasn’t as if she had done something to make her hate her – at least it felt like she did – but the feeling pulled at her gut as a warning. Her gaze followed hers to Cato her smile faltering as he yelled at the crying girl. She wasn’t sure if Leonie deserved it and most time the people that he snapped at didn’t – she shook her head stopping her thoughts. “What? No, of course not! I’m not going to kill you even if…” She trailed off her cheeks blushing a bight pink at the mention of a crush on her. “Nononono. You’ve got it all wrong! He’s just a good friend of mine and I enjoy his company but he doesn’t like me like that.” Isabelle let her gaze drop to her hands as she toyed with the fabric of her pink dress. “Cato likes someone else and that’s alright because we’re friends. Just friends.”
Nef resisted the near overwhelming urge to shake Isabelle, but didn’t fight the harsh tone accompanying her words. “Hey, are you by chance fucking daft or something? How thick can you get? I’m his best friend, you think I wouldn’t know? He digs,” she paused, eyes flickering gratingly over Isabelle’s figure, “whatever you’ve got going on.” Her attention flickered back to the dress and she huffed, before muttering to herself, “my God, why is it so fucking pink. So, so pink.” She shook her head, “anyways, if you’re not going to kill me, you may as well go tickle Cato’s fancy. I’m going to go shove my head in the punch bowl and hope I drown in alcohol instead. Good talk, Montague.”
“Maybe…It just looks like everyone’s just getting drunk anyways.” She offered a disappointed smile. “My dad would be angry if I ruined this – by the way, have you seen Cato? I lost him in the crowd…”
“Hahahahahahahahahahaha true.” Nef laughed —- or something very, very remnant of it. What was wrong with her? Why didn’t she want the girl Cato liked to spend time with him? “He’s fucking with Leonie Greengrass over there,” she nodded in the boy’s direction, eyes resting on him as he seemed to get progressively louder in whatever he was yelling at the pureblood girl. Surely, as a pal, it was her duty to aid him however she could when it came to his crushes and up until now, she had done so. But something about Isabelle and her stupid pretty face and stupid pretty perfume made her want to slam her own forehead against a desk. Even now she found her attention lingering on the idiot as he antagonised Greengr —- oh no. Oh. No. It wasn’t? It couldn’t be. Not for Caius Cato fucking Crouch. Not for her best friend. Oh no, but it was. It swelled up in her throat now like chunks of food did when one needed to vomit; it was a feeling. A feeling for Cato. The girl outwardly groaned and whipped around to face Isabelle after the long moment, “hey, listen, what do you say about killing me? Just real quick, one quick unforgivable curse and we’re done. Do me a solid, here, short stuff, considering I’ve had to deal with Cato’s annoying little bitch ass first year crush on you. Please?”
“Huh?” There was a shove to Cato’s back, pushing him to fall forwards right in front of Milo the ghost. Lips forming an awkward smile as he simply stared at the translucent boy? Man? He swiftly looked behind his shoulder at Nef then back to Milo. “Hi Milo, you alright? Uh, basically, my friend, Nefetari Greyback, I call her Nef, is scared of ghosts and… well, you are one! Can you hear that? She’s practically growling, that’s so funny. So yeah, do you mind, like, pissing off somewhere else? Yeah? Spud me.”
“Ugh, you smell fucking weird too,” she huffed at Cato’s back, after Milo floated or walked or whatever the hell a ghost did away. “What is that, grandma perfume? Great grandma Crouch come to visit? You need a shower. Or like, seven.” Nef’s eyes scanned the hallway and she was disheartened to find that if the moment called for it, there would be nothing to flip. A first year would have to do. Shoulders still pulled tight and fists clenched, the girl tensed her jaw, “I think I’m hungry, or something.”
“Can you smell that? That see through ass fuck, what’s his name again? Mike? Milo. Ain’t nobody got time for ghosts, okay. Dead things should stay dead and I —- God, no, it’s coming, no, no. Oh, God, no,” Nefetari’s shoulders tensed up and she shoved the person closest to her forward so as to create a barrier between herself and Milo McFadden, Hogwart’s chirpiest ghost. “No, no, no.”
There was no in-between for her. It was either all or nothing. She wanted everything but settled for nothing (insp).
“Does putting an a ball gown count as dressing up like a princess? Or just over dressed?”
“Maybe you should just go back to your dorm and call it a night? It’s no fun here anyways, and you don’t wanna ruin that dress, like, accidentally tripping or something.”
