Mike’s Motels by Mike Mandel, 1974
I don't know of any wrestler who hasn't, at one time or another, been with a fan. One time I met a woman at a match in Tennessee, and afterward we went to a little roadside motel. We checked in, went to the room, and enjoyed each other for an hour or so. Jerry Lawler Read more at https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/motel-quotes
“The real psychological truth is this: If you’ve got nothing to hide, you are nothing.” ― Shoshana Zuboff, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism
Just finished The Executioner’s Song by Norman Mailer as my classic read for the year - I’ve watched Norman Mailer and some of the debates he had with feminists in the 70′s - in which he infamously declared himself ‘an enemy of birth control’. This thought was in the back of my mind while reading the book and wondered if his description of one of the female characters as overtly sexual was his own masculine rendering. Considering that this is a true story, his portrayal of Nicole may or may not be influenced by this - but the writing style is dry, journalistic. I read the New York Times Review written Joan Didion in the early 80′s and she seems to comment on the same thing - it’s refreshing how the book comes across overall. I don’t know that I felt a lot of empathy for Gary Gilmore by the time the execution takes place (spoiler alert) nor do I think I fully understood his motives in crime but the book tries to get you closer to who the man was and what he was driven by. Although 1050 pages was a bit over the top. I skimmed the end court scenes - truth be told.

Summer finally arrived! I had doubts for the entirety of June when it seemed we were stuck in a November-like rain and cold schedule. Now those rains have left the ground saturated for the perpetual state of humidity/corn sweat we are now in. Recently a patron reminded me that only six months ago the temperature... View more
