𝙱𝙻𝙾𝙶 𝙸𝚂 𝙰 𝚂𝚃𝚄𝙳𝚈 𝙸𝙽:  vampirism  not  through  curses  or  mysticism,    but  from  a  sci-fi  approach.     vampirism  &  lycanthropy  are  a  result  of  a  biological  mutation  ties  to  an  ancient   viral  strain  in  bloodline;    treating  the  supernatural  more  from  a  genetic  science.      also,    in  loss  of  family -- identity  through  being  a  trained  weapon.    hatred,    revenge,    centuries  of  memory  manipulation  /  false  history,    ancient  feud  of  the  species,    becoming  more   than  what  you  were  bred  for,     betrayal  of  patriarchal  authority,     evolution  beyond  her  creators,     centuries  of  war  trauma.

         i  have  been  thinking  about  the  structure  of  the  death  dealers   &  how  their  roles  might  realistically  function.    at  much  higher  rankings,    especially  at  someone  like  selene's  rank,     you  would  be  expected  to  spend  a  large  amount  of  time  in  active  field  work.    hunting  lycans  is  not  routine,    it  is  extremely  dangerous,     even  for  vampires.    lycans  are,    in  most  situations,    physically stronger while  vampires  rely  more  on  speed,   agility,    &  precision  to  survive  encounters  with  lycans;     you  need  to  be  incredibly  focused  &  calculated.     there  is  also  a  biological  risk.     the  vampire  &  lycan  strains  are  fundamentally  incompatible.   when  they  mix,     they  tend  to  destabilize  the  host  at  a  molecular  level,     which  often  results  in  a  painful  death.    this  makes  combat  especially  dangerous  as  a  single  bite  could  be  fatal  under  normal  circumstances.     while  a  bite  from  either  species  would  turn  a  human,     a  bite  from  either  when  one  of  the  strains  is  existing  already  in  a  host  will  end  in  death.    

field  work  as  a  death  dealer  requires  intense  focus,    patience,    &   experience.    tracking  lycans  could  take  days,     sometimes  even  longer.    success  depends  just  as  much  on  time  &  restraint  as  it  does  on  combat  ability.    newer  recruits,     or  lower  ranked  death  dealers  would  be  more  commonly  assigned  the  guard  duties,     protecting  their  covens,     securing  territory,     or  serving  higher  ranked vampire  officials.    in  contrast  those  with  more  experience  and  proven  skills  are  trusted  with  active  hunts,    and  also  given  access  to  much  more  advanced  weaponry.     

at  selene's  level  she  stands  apart.    she  is  a  trusted  operate  in  the  field  consistently,    often  taking  on  extremely  high  risk  assignments.    her skill  &  efficiency  allow  her  to  survive  situations  thaat  would  otherwise  overwhelm  most  death  dealers.    she  can  work  within  a  team,    but  she  is  more  than  capable  of  operating  alone,    even  when  facing  multiple  lycans  at  once.   

selene  has  spent  centuries  training.     she  is  married  to  her  position  &  takes  her  duty  as  a  death  dealer  very  seriously.    she  rather  be  training,   practicing  her  aim,    planning  her  next  asignment  than  participate  in  the  politics  &  luxury  of  vampirism.

insolence! it bleeds from her freely - it's untempting scent poisoning the air. viktor's intolerance to it causes a scrunch of the nose, and a guttural sound rips through him. his marble throne quakes as he stands before he crosses the expanse between them in a blink of an eye. claws and teeth are held in their sheaths, for now. his towering height creates a shadow behind her - an unmoving monolith. "do you believe i make the choice lightly, selene? kraven brought lucian to his knees, brought safety to our kind from our greatest enemy."

for a moment, he really sees her. the proud cut of his jaw unclenches. he raises his arm deliberately slow, knuckles uncurling as he brushes a strand from her face. viktor doesn't particularly care for kraven, hates him really. he is a showboating disappointment of a fledgling, but he must show favor. the council demands it. "tell me, then, these risks you forsee, my childe."

"    her  tone  was  softer  now,    lower.    "  i  fear  he  will  undo  all  that  we've  worked  for.  "     the  claims  that  kraven  did  such  a  thing.    that  tale.   selene   knew  it.    she  knew  it  well  ---  he  never  let  anyone  forget  it.     but  she  always  questioned  if  he  had  more  help  than  let  on,    or  perhaps  something  wasn't  being  entirely  disclosed.      "  i  beg  you  to  heed  my  warning.  "     please.

Stolen progeny stands before him. Her gaze upon him is nearly as intense as his to hers. Stubborn. Standoffish. Spoiled.

Selene is a product of his tutelage. Perhaps, Viktor may deign to admit, that it is his fault she gets away with more than she should. It matters not that her visage resembles that of his Sonja. No, never that.

"I will not be questioned, @lyc4nhunt. Craven will oversee the coven while I slumber. You will obey." His scowl deepens, his fangs digging into the flesh of his lip. His eyes narrow as if to pin her to the ground where she stands. This is not a suggestion, and he dares her to challenge it as such.

         anger  settled  within  her  core.     desperate,     she  knew  this  decision  wasn't  wise.     of  all  who  could  be  chosen-     selene  did  question  the  elder's  choice  to  grant  so  much  power  to  a  coward.     her  gaze  dropped  as  words  were spoken,    but  then  looked  up  again  with  something  in  her  eyes.    no  anger,    but  a  controlled  frustration.     " my  lord   [ ... ]   i  fear  he  will  disappoint  you.  "    tone  was  low,   careful,    but  insistent  in  what  she  spoke.    "  i  have  seen  craven  where  you  have  not,  "     she  tightened  her  words,    cautious  as  to  not  overstep  too  much.     "  i  trust  your  judgment  above  all  things,     yet  placing  the  coven  in  his  hands  is  a  risk  i  can't  ignore.  "
