I got this comment on a story from my Other AO3 Account this morning.

(Info redacted because I prefer keeping these accounts separate but no one follows me on the side blog I have for that account.)

The story was posted almost a year ago and is relatively “popular” by my average statistics even though it has tropes and themes that are big turnoffs for a lot of people (hence separate accounts). This popularity is undoubtedly because it’s a Marvel Loki story and that fandom is massive.

So there is obviously an algorithm or a bot scrubbing ao3 statistics and leaving this comment on fics that meet a certain metric with the main character of the fic inserted into the comment.

I had a little time to kill this morning so I decided to investigate further. And y’all this is so predatory. Come on this journey with me. It made me mad. It may make you mad.

First, if you go to Webnovel’s website, you HAVE to choose between male lead or female lead stories before you can go any further. WTF?

And that’s weird, but this gets so much worse. This is basically a pay-to-read site that has different subscription models. Which… okay BUT! The authors don’t get paid! Look at that comment again. They’re promising a supportive and nurturing community, but zero monetary compensation. It’s basically, “post your stuff here so we can get paid and you can get… nice vibes?” I mean look at this Orwellian writing:

Using the phrase “pay-to-read model” in the same sentence as “qualitative changes in lifestyles for authors” deliberately makes you think that you can get paid and maybe even make a living on this website. But that’s not actually what it says and authors will not receive one red cent.

Oh but wait, the worst is still to come. In case this breaks containment (which I kind of hope it does) this is where I mention that I’m a lawyer in the US.

I don’t do intellectual property or copyright law but I do read and write contracts for a living. So I went to look at their terms of service. It was fun!

Highlights the first, in which Webnovel gets a license to do basically whatever they want with content you post on their site. This is how they get to be paid for people reading authors’ writing without paying them anything.

Highlights the second, in which Webnovel takes no responsibility for illegally profiting off of fan fic. This all says that the writer is 100% responsible for everything the writer posts (even though only Webnovel is making money from it).

Highlights the third which say that by posting, the author is representing that they have the legal right to use and to let Webnovel use the content according to these terms. So if a writer posts fan fiction and Webnovel makes money from people reading the fan fiction, and the House of the Mouse catches wise, these sections say that that’s ALL on the writer.

So that’s a little skeevy to start off with but the thing that is seriously shitty and made me make this post was that these assholes are coming to ao3. They are actively recruiting people in comments on their fan fiction. And they are saying they are big fans of the character you’re writing about and that they share your interests.

They are recruiting fan fiction writers and giving every impression that you can make money from posting fan fiction on their site and hiding the fact that you absolutely cannot but they can make money off of you while you try, deep in their terms of service which no one but a lawyer who writes fan fic and has some time to kill will read.

I see posts on here regularly from people who don’t understand how this stuff works, don’t understand that they (and others) can not legally make a financial profit from fan fiction. And there are tons of people who will not take the time to dig into the details.

Don’t deal with these bastards. Fuck Webnovel.

Plagiarist  Is Back

So if you’re not up to date on the saga of the girl who plagiarized not just TRT but an absolute mass of life details about me in some bizarre attempt to wear my personality like a skin suit, you can find that entire weird journey here.

And now she’s back, and fortunately, I planned ahead in case I needed to confirm her the second time around. 

Thanks to a lovely anon in my box who noticed a bunch of similarities between the plagiarist’s new tumblr account and her last - the same bio, same emojis in the header, same love of cacti and wolves, also suspiciously only made an account recently. But she’s gotten ballsier this time - remember that anon claiming ‘she stole from my fic too!’ ? Well, when you go to her blog, she’s now claiming that not only was she also plagiarized, but her life details were stolen, too! Specifically, all the details I mentioned - the pets, pokemon, story elements, and makeup details.

I realize a lot of this seems circumstantial. Which is why, when I blasted all of her socials from her twitter to her blog to her reddit… I kept one out on a hunch. I kept her pinterest.

A pinterest that has now been updated to the same username the anon warned me about.

Hello again @wolf-in-chanel​, you plagiarizing piece of shit.

Evidence as usual. You’ll note on her pinterest she has the same header image of eevees she used on her first K9bails account. Hilarious, you’ll also see she’s updated to include, ‘emotional psychic’ in her pinterest bio, AKA my character Jane Hind’s designation, since she’s seemingly just as obsessed with stealing my fic elements as she is with stealing details about my life.

She’s using all the same pinterest boards, referring to her wattpad fic (see previous post linked at the beginning of this post). She’s also already updating with ao3 inspo. As expected, she’s likely looking to steal from someone again, whether that’s me or someone else.

And then we get to the ballsy bit.

So above I mentioned that anon I answered about someone claiming they’d had story stuff stolen too. Something was fishy about it, but I didn’t have enough to go off of, so I treated it like I normally would. But as stated, she’s made some long, rambling ask posts about how her life details were stolen too. She’s using the same method we’re all familiar with now - clearly sock-puppet asks from herself, giving her an excuse to list all the things she ‘coincidentally’ had stolen that are, coincidentally, the same details stolen from me, down to the anxiety over being stalked and about my wording for having your personality taken.

Get a load of this fucking bullshit. I’ve underlined elements either stolen from me or similar patterns to her last account (’never been on tumblr before! Only ever on twitter!’ and ‘had a following on twitter, but I left it for reasons!’).

Once again, this girl has not only stolen from me, but she’s been reblogging my fucking posts and attempting to interact with me (Ex Post One, Two). She’s also reblogged and followed a few of the other writers in the same fandom.

She’s also already talking about writing again. I’m not sure who she’s planning to steal from this time, but I can guarantee it’s someone.

@wolf-in-chanel​, you’ve been caught again. Ironically, I didn’t even need your pinterest to find you - people are now aware enough of your shit to know when it’s you. You are unable to hide, and you will always be found.

Side note - that other anon in my box? Thanks for confirming with your rant that that anon was also you. I’ll be blocking that, too, so you can’t send me fucking anon asks again.

Now on some good news

Artstation protest against allowing AI-generated art on the platform, which took form of artists flooding the site with pictures saying NO AI ART, has utterly fucked up AI Art generators that were sampling art trending on artstation without permission. Thus proving that all these generators do indeed steal artwork.

Warning About A Plagiarizing Fic Author

Right. Time for the callout post, since the thief has refused to answer my messages or take down the fic. Before we start: do not send her hate mail. At most, I’m looking for firm requests that she take down her fic and, as you’ll see, all the blog posts where she’s stolen content from me. Mostly I’m just trying to apply firm pressure so she takes all the stolen work down, and so that people are aware of what she’s doing so she can’t do this to anyone else. So, let’s start. If you’re in the Daredevil fandom on tumblr and AO3 at all, you might have heard of my fic The Red Thread about a psychic reader/OC referred to as Jane Hind/The Hound, who can see, via third eye, psychic threads of connection between people, animals, and beloved objects. It’s this fic that’s been blatantly plagiarized by @k9bails (who’s blocked me at present, so here’s the link to her main blog which I managed to access before I was blocked). Her fic on AO3 is called Legend, under the username K9bails. She’s also got a side blog called @k-9bails​ which appears less active, and a wattpad profile here, so please, if you write, make sure your work hasn’t been stolen. She’s only got the first chapter as of today, but it’s already full of stolen material, and her blog is absolutely bursting at the seams with things she’s stolen from me. Fortunately, before she blocked me, I was able to get screenshots, both of the fic just in case she edited it later, and her blog (which I had to screenshot on PC, so apologies for messiness).  I’ve made a report to AO3 (please DO NOT report it on AO3, they prefer only one person do the reporting so that the volunteer team isn’t overwhelmed) and I am awaiting word back. But she’s also got my stuff all over her tumblr, and since she’s ignored my messages, it’s time to post it, since she’s active in the fandom and I don’t want her taking anyone else’s work.

Let’s start with the main bit from her fic. Left side is my first chapter, right side is her fic. If you’ve read TRT, you know that the concept of psychic threads seen through the third eye is incredibly important. They connect friends and acquaintances, family, pets, and even beloved childhood objects, with each type of connection denoted by a different color. She’s rotated some colors around, and taken some of the colors I introduce later like white, black, and purple, but this is very much my concept. Note she’s stolen a line almost directly word for word here: ‘Silver threads always struck Scout as the saddest,’ to compare to my, ‘That last always struck you as the saddest.’

In this case, she’s also taken the kaleidoscope effect line from a few chapters later:

I thought this was blatant, but it only got worse: she lifts two of my other original characters, and doesn’t even bother to change their fucking names. In this case, in her very first chapter, she’s lifted both Ciro, my OC’s Italian father figure (I’ve added a screenshot on the upper right from Ch17 of the first time his name is used), and Eli, an OC adopted by Ciro (also added to screenshot, bottom right). Eli doesn’t even appear until ch 36 so this stretches a long ways.

The rest of this I’m going to put behind a see more tag, cause we got a lot to go.
