Very Brief Guide to [tumblr], for Reddit refugees
Shit You Must Do Right Fucking Now:
Change your profile picture, blog header, and title to something other than the defaults. Do it right now. You will be mistaken for a bot otherwise, and blocked.
Go into Settings -> Dashboard, scroll down to Preferences, and turn off the options in the picture. This will get rid of most of the algorithmic stuff.
Turn off Tumblr Live. You have to snooze it once every 7 days for some stupid reason. It's hosted through another company and will steal your data if you use it.
Go to your blog settings (under the little person menu) and turn off these two settings:
Turn off infinite scroll (lags the site) and turn on timestamps on posts, in the same menu as Preferences.
Basic Features of the Site:
Reblogs drive the entire site. If you'd upvote something on Reddit, you'd reblog it on Tumblr. You can add text, images, or tags to a reblog, but you're not required to.
The dashboard is the equivalent to your Reddit feed, and contains the posts of all the people you follow, with the newest at the top
You can send an ask to someone, and it'll appear in their askbox for them to answer. You can receive them too, or turn off the settings if you don't want.
Tags aren't actually used for finding stuff (search function is dogshit), but are more for categorizing. People also talk in tags. Because Tumblr is weird, you can't use quotation marks (") or commas in them without fucking it up
You can filter both tags and phrases under Account Settings; doing this will put a filter over a post that contains them, which you'll have to click through to see the post itself. Useful for avoiding hate speech or blocking out annoying stuff
You can make polls in posts. Here's one now.

Stuff Tumblr Does That Other Sites Don't:
Very old posts (I'm talking from like 2012) often circulate on this site. There's no such thing as a post being "too old" to reblog
Blocking is highly encouraged; you can block someone for any reason. Even for just being annoying.
If you and someone else are following each other, you are mutuals. Mutuals are fucking awesome and are treasured like friends. Mutuals are a thing on other sites but Tumblr treats em differently.
You can screenshot someone's tags if you like them and add them to a reblog. This is called "peer review"
Sometimes someone will find a blog and go through it and like/reblog a bunch of posts. This is totally fine and not "creepy" like it is seen as on other sites.
Tumblr jokes often rely on Continuing The Bit and a "yes, and?" attitude. Goncharov is probably the best example of this.
We are fucking infested with bots. They will either have totally blank profiles or be filled with porn. Block and report on sight.
Censorship is pretty lax here. I can say "I want to brutally stab Elon Musk to death and watch him bleed out in front of a crowd" and nobody gives a shit.
General Etiquette:
Don't try to do epic clapbacks here, you'll probably just get laughed at or blocked. If someone is bugging you or spouting bigoted bullshit, block them.
Reblog art!!! Artists often struggle to gain traction on here; reblogging will give them a boost.
Not every reblog needs a comment or tag in it
You can go all out with tagging your stuff to organize it, or you can just leave it all blank. Someone might ask "hey, can you tag these posts as [x]?" and you can decide if you want to do that or not. It's generally polite to oblige, but "no" is still reasonable.
Avoid discourse like the plague. Filter it, block people who start it, scroll past it when you see it. Just don't get involved in it. Ever.
Don't put fandom tags or jokes on someone's posts about serious matters or personal shit
You're responsible for curating your own dashboard; if you complain about constantly seeing stuff you don't like, that's probably on you. Don't be afraid to unfollow.
Follower count doesn't matter much here and you don't have to make yours known if you don't want to.
Reblog, don't repost. Reblogging keeps the credit and doesn't "steal" engagement like Twitter retweets.
If someone likes something a LOT, they might reblog it like 30 times in a row. This is normal
Having a post blow up is actually kinda a bad thing, since it floods your notifications. There's a sort of in-joke about how having a big post is awful and people jokingly try to stop their own posts from blowing up, often in vain.

Get XKit Rewritten if you're on desktop, it's a really helpful extension
In the little drop-down menu next to the 'Post now' button you can either save a draft, schedule a post, or add it to your queue. The queue lets you post things in order at a certain interval, which you can change. It's good for spreading stuff out over time.

I was telling a Spanish-speaking friend today that the word “caballo” is very fitting as it does feel like a Spanish horse (andalusian), it’s just an elegant word to me, and then we decided to make a list of what kind of horse various words for “horse” feel like
1. Caballo (Spanish). A strong yet genteel hidalgo of a horse.
2. Pferd (German). Pferd is a forthright, earnest, down-to-earth kind of chap. (I think because it brings to mind the word Erde.) That’s a Pferd:

Finished the last course in my AA program! I just have to wait until my instructor submits my final grade and I can apply for graduation. It feels so good and almost unreal that it’s finally done. This semester was a challenge with a full course load, but being on a combination of the right meds made a huge difference.
I’ve been struggling the past few weeks with increasing depression. Money is tight and we’re struggling to pay the few bills we have. I’m looking for a job to help but I know I won’t be able to keep it energy-wise when school starts back up in the fall.

Yesterday I made the decision to go for my bachelors in data analytics and programming. It still feels crazy but I think it’s the right decision.
When you've been traumatized in ways that made you question your worth, going through hard or stressful times in the future can make it harder for you to believe in your worth in the present. This is especially true if your present hardships activate past traumas. I'd just like to remind you that your worth is immeasurable and does not diminish even when you cannot see it. You have immense worth. You always did, and you have it still.
This week is a little crazy study-wise:
Forensic science - ✅ 1 chapter to read, 2-3 page paper on 1 hr video (✅ watched the video), ✅ midterm
Business communications - create 3 graphs from data sets found last week, read 1 chapter
Gender & society - ✅ read 1 chapter, two part final, posttest
Add to the fact that I’ve been driving my wife to her appts, plus getting an epidural in my neck this week. It’s a bit crazy. But I’m chugging along!

Homophones or near homophones I see misused a lot, and a few non-homophones people seem to get muddled anyway.

Peek is to look at something.
Pique is annoyance (a fit of pique) or what happens if something piques your interest.
Taught is what you were in school.
Taut is what buttcheeks can be.

Cavalry is people on horseback in an army, or figuratively, backup/someone coming to aid you.
Calvary is the place of the crucifixion in the Gospels.
Discreet is being quiet about something.
Discrete is individual items, not joined to one another.
Complement is when colours or people go together well and bring out the best in one another.
Compliment is something nice someone tells you, or a gift. Complimentary colours would either be free of charge or when a shade of pink tells you you look pretty today.
These are not homophones in my accent, but they are in other people’s and folks often get it wrong.
Clamour is a noise, often loud, often of a large crowd.
Clamber is what you do over rocks, or to your feet.
I’m seeing a lot of taut/taught confusion in the Witcher fandom.
Taut is an adjective, meaning tight, flexed, not slack.
Taught is the past participle and past tense of to teach.
Someone taught Jaskier the lute, or maybe he taught himself. At any rate, he was well-taught, since he plays the instrument capably.
His lute strings OTOH are taut, and so are Geralt’s buttocks.

Taut is the tightness of something
The rope was pulled taut around the stack of firewood.
Taunt is to provoke someone by insulting them, teasing them, or mocking them.
The playground bully continued to taunt me, even as I ran away.
(though it could be used to describe something being provoking in a positive way, like a carrot on a stick almost. Jaskier being taunted by Geralt’s taut butt as they journey is just too much. He decides to write a song about it. And walk in front from now on.)

One I’ve seen especially from Americans, because this isn’t a homophone in other Englishes:
The phrase is ’make do’ or ’making do’ (NOT “"making due”“). It means you do what you can with what you already have.
OH! And also bear vs bare. Bear is the animal, but also a verb meaning to carry. You bear arms or a flag. Bare is naked, or to make naked.
Perhaps think of it as bears being particularly good at carrying things, what with their very long arms.
Relatedly: grisly means bloody or gruesome; grizzly is the bear. (And grizzled means streaked with grey.)
A rein is a strap attached to a horse that you use to steer it. It has been verbed: you rein in your horse, meaning you slow it down and get it under control. You can also rein in a situation or an unruly protege by the power of ascended metaphor.
Reign is what you call the enforcement of a monarch’s power: you are under their reign they have influence on you of a governmental / absolute / divinely ordained flavor. Reign is also a verb: monarchs reign. The period for which a monarch reigns is their reign.
In conclusion, I’ve always thought spelling the idiom for bringing something or someone under control as reign in was a very interesting and reasonable mistake to make.
Content(ed) is an adjective meaning happy, satisfied, replete. Content is also a noun meaning something that is contained, what is inside; eg the contents of a book. It can also be a verb, to say a thing made one happy or satisfied.
Contend is to struggle or try. Contended is the past tense of contend, it is not an adjective.
A happy character who just discovered good content in their book is not contended, they’re content or contented.
Wrought Iron is metal that has been beaten into shape. Historically, by a smith on an anvil with a hammer.
