The Saloona once came from a more tropical, coastal climate, and struggled to acclimatise to the Depths in the early years. Once I’m more comfortable with their design I’ll do some colour sketches for them
Currently sick - again - but I have hot water in my house for the first time in five years! Which means I’ve been looking over some of my not posted and in progress works on both worldbuilding for the Depths and for my AU.
Hilariously enough, having now watched a play through of the newest instalment in the Zelda Canon, Age of Imprisonment actually recanons some of my old ideas that I’d been scared to lose to all of Nintendo’s retconning. An unintended consequence I’m sure, but a welcome one. It allows me to put the multiple Imprisoning Wars into different categories and specify that different regions have different ideas regarding said histories. After all, the winning and losing sides of a battle would call it different names, which helps immensely.
What this all means is that, due to Zonai tech now being even less of an issue that I’d expected, I can go absolutely wild.
Which begs the question; of the eras of time I’m specifically working on, which would people like me to explore and explain first?
Ones I have mostly worked out with some tweaks needed;
The Gerudo Wasting
The War of the Bound Chest
The Cursing of the Saloona
The March of Demise
Ones I’ve got the plot for but need to place properly;
The Greater and Lesser Imprisoning Wars
The Sheikah Schisms
Ones sitting in limbo;
The Ancient Calamity
I also have some tribes to introduce and work through, such as the Saloona, and the Proto-Rito I’ve decided to utilise. There are far more, including particular factions of humans, the difference between Draconificatin, actual normal dragons and Dragon Spirits, and of course we cannot forget - the minor and major spirits from the Era of the March of Demise. Unfortunately I haven’t got any art prepared for many of them, and am still struggling through renovations. So it’ll be some time before I get back into the swing of things.
But for the time being, I promise I’m still around, working on it.
A part of me will always be a little disappointed we didn't get a more fleshed out Depths, so here, have some very interesting plant species that could have been used, or used to greater effects. It's all well and good to supersize a plant, but why don't we also use some of the cool flora of old biomes and specialised environments.
I'll have to add in some of the further concept art as I make if, but in the end, I suppose I'm just a huge fan of this thing called the outside world. What a crime.
Side note; if you were to make a biome or something in the depths, be it an animal, a building, a plant, or a place, what would it be and what would it do? Tears of the Kingdom had the chance to go full Subnautica 1 on this, and didn't. what would you differently? And feel free to add pictures if you like!
featured plants;
Cycad
grass tree
Wollemi pine
casaurina tree
dendrosenicio
orchid
ginko
horsetail ferns
rhubarb
swamp fern
Don't they just look sick?? Could you imagine? ugh
Add in some fantasy elements, bioluminescence for the plants that eat insects, and hey! that's an ecosystem that has a reason to exist right there.
Adding to the concept of the Depths - structured biomes! Mangroves and swamps, pillars and mazes made of the cavern’s themselves built into the walls by the inhabitants of the realm. Small hamlets and villages left abandoned - or occupied - that filtered water, fished, mined, harvested fruits and leaves from the strange world below. A water scape full of glowing life, and underwater caves that only the correct item or guide could lead you through.
When I said world beneath, I meant it! A place of wonder, danger and mystery that once held life! And I’m loving some of the ideas so far.
This is just a water based biome so far, but perhaps one that hangs from the ceiling, or occupied lava, or has a glacier plunging into the Depths would be interesting? An excuse to bring out some prehistoric animals just that bit too weird for the Surface.

Who of us is more to blame? Warrior Goddess, or battle weary Sage? Would it have happened, if we’d taken a different road? Oh Guardian of Time, how can I know?

Chance may have done a few field tests of Ravio’s more experimental merchandise. For a fee, of course.
(I use Ravio’s hood like Spider-Man artists use the mask. Expressive eyes and ears galore. Unseen is Sheerow stealing cookies from a jar Chance didn’t hide quite well enough.)
((It’s important to me that people know Chance speaks like the most stereotypical Essex farmer-blacksmith you can think of. Full on and accented. Jamie Oliver looks posh in comparison. Ravio sometimes needs him to speak slowly and with emphasis just to make sense of him. Ravio’s city boy ass can’t cope with these kind of conditions. It’s between Liverpool and Manchester for Ravio, because he can’t come off too posh, but certainly more than poor Chance.))
Three guesses what I’m replaying right now. And I’ve got to say - A Link Between Worlds has excellent replay-able value. I’m very much enjoying relearning where the puzzles are.
And Chance is such a fun, funky little man. He’s so… fifteen and self conscious of that, you know? Doesn’t talk much because his voice is constantly cracking, accidentally knocks things over and breaks things with the unconscious power an apprentice blacksmith has. He only needed bronze coloured gloves to lift rocks - which immediately puts him ahead of a few heroes, but not all of them.
And like all teenagers… what’s a sleep schedule?
His current backstory is both incredibly simple and extremely foundational to who he is. He is… the son of a baker and a farmer, and is being raised in their stead by his father’s best mate, the blacksmith. Simple enough… until you remember how the Knights of Hylia carry on through family, and adoption technically counts here, and an apprenticeship is sort of adoption as far as the ancestor spirits are concerned.
And Gulley looks a little… familiar, wouldn’t you say?
Personal note under cut
Moved in, and suffering Australian summer. Thankfully, the heat has abated, but it did make my walls literally sag in places. Lovely. Hoping to keep updating my AUs, but we’ll see.
The people of the Depths - who were once Surface Dwellers - are based off a collection of ideas I’ve been sitting on over time. The Saloona name comes from a spinoff Tingle game (yeah, I know…) and their general designs come from both the Twili, the Tower of the Gods, the Four Sword pedestal, parts of the Zonai, some Sheikah inspirations, and a heavy amount of Mayan Stone Carving, Cambodian Architecture, Punjabi clothing, and a significant amount of early Yayoi period Japan. Like most fantasy cultures, yes it’s a blend. I’m trying desperately not to shove too many things into their designs, but I’m not sure I’m succeeding. I may have to simplify them later, but that is a problem for future me.
Due to being an ancient ‘lost’ race, they have many sub variants, and many subcultures inside the main whole, but largely? The Tribe of the Saloona were once beholden to Demise’s Bride, and uh…
Took her side in the divorce… which led to them being cursed into eternal darkness. That doesn’t stop them from partying with light and colour, of course, and only gives them even more reasons to celebrate the little light they can touch.
Personal update below
So, I’ve been encouraged to give water colour on ink and gouache a try for my work, and to stop drawing so small (A5 and B5 note books are what I tend to use, with A4 copy paper as my drafting paper) which will be interesting. But that is all going to have to wait!
I am… moving out at the moment, and into a house with no heating, no cooling, no gas, no hot water, no internet, and as of my efforts yesterday, a grand total of one door that actually locks. So posting will be sporadic, and possibly limited, but it’s been a long time coming.
Outside of that, my dad (the shock, the horror) has begged me to fill in my backgrounds and stop leaving characters standing in the void, and to use more colour - hence the few works I’ve done that have any at all.
Here, have some unfinished pieces that bridge Gates of Courage and my LU fic
‘Unknown Gerudo Voe’ is a bit of a problem for me. His childhood name is settled, and well worked out, but his name as King? Turns out there’s already a few ‘Temendorfs’ out there in the Gerudo Centric or Gerudo!Link works of fanfics, so I’m not sure if I’ll need to revise his name, or simply acknowledge the Major AUs that use it.
I’ll have to hit up the Gerudo part of this fandom for a name suited to ‘changing winds/tides/destinies’ because that’s that whole point of him. I’d wanted to keep Majora’s presence in the Fierce Deity comic something people only really noticed when they read it, but as she is a central character, it’s just not possible.
(My manager at work saw me making one of these and in panicked so hard. Until he was just like ‘oh, I’ve seen some of your posts of your art, it’s cool!’
I don’t know how to feel???)
Nettle when young teenager: wow… this Link guy is really annoying, but really cool??? Never had a guy friend before! Sweet!
Legend when much older: …I have a question, for the Goddesses… why??? What is that - 7ft 5??
Some more recently inked sketches. The last one was done almost more than a year ago, so hopefully the improvement between Tem/Nettle’s first designs and his most recent iteration is actually not just in my head.
Engie looks better in paper for some reason??? Don’t ask me why. Just can’t seem to get the same confidence in my art in digital compared to physical mediums.
And whilst Tem/Nettle crosses universes, most others aren’t quite as constant. At least the LU fic has been good practice for properly building my own. I’ve been sitting on the AU since I was a kid, had so many half baked ideas that just never went anywhere, so boiling them down to the absolute bones has been very good for me.
(Just goes to show how slow I am in refining ideas and characters - I’ve had these suckers since 2016 maybe??? And I’ve done a whole lot of nothing with them. They were nameless, nebulous concepts that I’m only just hammering into shape. So that’ll be a whole lot of desperately organising thoughts.
What I will say, is that at least half of them have a proper Quest timeline now - temples, items, fights and failures and so forth - which will make any allusions I give to their backstories and experience more weight for the original Links. Touchwood on the non-originals - skyward sword is a game I haven’t played in a very long time, and Ocarina of Time is one I strangely enough never had the chance to. Let’s plays only get you so far of an understanding, so that’ll be interesting.)
Behold! Some partially finished practice work on the Links.
Getting the same face consistently recognisable is harder than you think, and has to be relearned with every character you make. I used to suffer having all my characters look identical to each-other. These days I struggle making the same characters twice. But practice and repetition has helped.
You can see that Alchemist - the first one I tried this with - was a struggle, where Linden - the second, done 3 months ago - at least has the same facial features if perhaps aging up and down and changing proportions. By the time I’m currently working on Chance - sketched up a few weeks ago, inking ongoing - my ability to recreate the same character is physically visible to see. Now, it’s about making my line-work clean and concise, getting my head around bodies and clothing, and gestures of hands and posture. Then - objects!
Equipment, tools, items and magic swords. And while I’ve had some success in water colour backgrounds on paper, doing them on a digital canvas is more difficult than I’d expected.
I’m hoping Linden’s general appearance gives out the Snowy Province vibes I wanted. Chance’s boots are between really old fashioned turn shoes, and the classic curled boots worn by Cossacks, Persians, and some depictions found of Vikings and Mongolians historically and more recently.
The Alchemist needs to give off the feel of someone who’s repairing the same old garments over and over again, whilst still having enough polish to seem tidy. That one, I know I haven’t managed. We’ll get there.
