Carmel only laughed hearing her roommate chatting away as she helped her carrying her boxes inside the apartment, “You’re paying me something nice for all this labor work,” she joked at her new roommate and carefully dropped the box on their living room, Carmel didn’t have any problem helping Lynne mostly because it’s so nice to finally have a roommate, “Tell me about it though, I almost gave up because I was tempted to take up my parent’s offer to just moved back to their place when I moved in here,” she let out small chuckle as she cracked her back.

“Oh, don’t worry, I’ll make sure I get you something good. It’ll be like college! You know, help out your roommate move into the dorm and they feed you and you bond over that sort of thing,” said Lynne with a smile. “At least with parents there’s no rent to pay. Least probably not as much as this, but this isn’t bad,” she conceded. “So, we should take a break. What do you want? It’s all on me.”

When she admitted she was cold as well, Emiliano’s slight suspicions that she’d been lying were proven true. He couldn’t help but be a little curious as to what had her out like that but soon his questions were being answered as she kept speaking. As she mentioned she got locked out of her apartment, Emiliano pursed his lips. Well that made sense now, he thought to himself. He didn’t say anything at first, just watched her as she talked before after a moment he finally said, “Yeah it wasn’t the best one around, I’ll agree but I guess it could be worse.” He tried to offer with what little optimism he held. “You don’t have an extra key?” He asked with a raised brow.

“Uh, well, no,” said Lynne shaking her head. “Just moved in so I only have the one key. And I’m not the kind of person who’d leave a key under a mat or something really naive like that to begin with. Seems like that’d just be asking for someone to take the key. Besides, I wasn’t really planning on getting locked out. I was in the middle of doing laundry and one thing led to another, so here I am.”

Ben was just coming home from the university carrying a bunch of books in his arms when he almost stumbled upon a heavy bag of what he guessed could only be books or furniture. “Shit!” He called out before regaining his balance. He turned to look at whoever was the owner of the bag that had almost killed him, only to freeze in his spot. It couldn’t be. This would be branded as the shittiest day of the year if the person standing in front of him was who he thought it was. “Lynne?” He asked, hoping he was just confusing faces. A small voice in the back of his head reminded him that he hardly forgot faces, so the person standing in front of him had to be Lynn. Ben ignored the voice and instead held hope that he could be wrong.

“You know it’s me,” said Lynne who could see the recognition in his eyes. “I haven’t changed that much in the past few years,” she said with a roll of her eyes as she leaned over to take hold of her bag of clothes again. She wasn’t sorry he’d run into it. She looked down at some of the books he’d dropped and then back up at hime. “What’re you doing here?”

“Oh shit -” Sienna let out a laugh of amusement before bringing her hand up to her mouth to silence the sound. She didn’t know if it was appropriate to laugh or not, “Sorry -” She said, though she had to bite down on her bottom lip to try and repress the growing smile on her lips, “You have some shitty luck for that to happen. I’m from Boston so really I should be alright with the cold but… Nah - not for me.” Sienna admitted, “You wanna borrow some pants in the meantime?” She offered, “I mean - I know you’re a little taller than me but fuck it, you can rock them like three quarter pants.”

“Oh, yeah, I imagine Boston would get pretty chilly in the winter time. I’m from Hawaii, so I’ve got only warm blood in me,” she said with a nod. “Oh, wow, that would actually be really great. I’m not going to be picky about how long the pants are, so even if they’re an awkward, short length, I’ll live. Better than no pants at all, anyway,” she laughed.

Ezra chuckled shortly, shaking his head. “It will only work if you’re in the Souther hemisphere or somewhere in the tropics. Not going to work in the middle of Denver,” he said matter-of-factly. “It’s okay,” he replied, raising his shoulders. “Lynne Yujin… Name’s Ezra. Just moved in too, just a few weeks ago.” Adjusting the bag strap on his shoulder, Ezra nodded and looked down at his phone again. “What’s your apartment number?” he gestured towards his phone as he dialed for the building manager.

“Yeah. Would have worked great if we were back where I’m from. Hawaii. So, you have enough people wandering around in shorts and swimsuits already anyway,” she said with a small smile. “You from around here or from somewhere else, Ezra?” said Lynne with a nod as he gestured to his phone. “Oh, I’m in 904,” she told him. “So, pretty high up. Where are you?”

“Let’s just say that I’ve been in your position one too many times before and I never once really learned my lesson from it all. I will say that it’s great to see that I’m not the only one this has happened to though.” Jamison said to the other girl with a small chuckle. “We can do this two ways; we can either pick the lock or go back to my place and try to see what we can do so you can continue your no pants party.”

“Wow, really?” asked Lynne. “That’s good to know. Won’t feel like such an idiot, anyway,” she said with a small smile. “You know how to pick a lock?” she asked curiously. “I mean, if you do, I’d love to see that.”

“Yea I know how to pick a lock. I’ve accidentally locked myself out of my place before. I don’t have a copy. I actually live in 907″

“Oh, cool, so we live on the same floor,” said Lynne with a nod. “Okay, well, let’s have a go at this lock, then. Doesn’t seem secure if they’re easy to pick at,” she mused as she looked up thoughtfully.

“Ah- well with the keys problem I can help. Where’s your apartment?” Remy asked the girl as she watched them cover the legs more. “Ah, it’s okay it happens to everyone. Well not everyone, everyone but a lot of people are locked out of their place lately.”

“Oh, I’m on the ninth floor. 904,” she told the girl with a nod. “904. I guess you know how to pick a lock or something,” she said casually. “Least, I’m assuming you don’t have a copy of my keys.”

“I promise this is the last of my stuff,” said Lynne as her roommate was helping her with a box. It was the last of the few things Lynne had left back in Hawaii that her parents had shipped over. It was finally official. She was moved into her apartment. “I’m like one of those people who takes ages to move into a place properly,” she explained to her. “But this should be it. So, no more surprises,” she laughed. “I don’t think I’ll be moving any time soon after this. It’s so much work.” @caramelcarmel

Emiliano shifted the plast bag in his hand as he made his way through the complex back to his apartment, the subtle clanking of glass bottles ringing in his ear. He just wanted to get back to his place and relax, having had a long day at work. On the way there though he ran into a woman who he couldn’t help but notice do to the lack of clothing she wore. He glanced at her with an odd expression before she spoke, realizing she’d caught him staring. Instantly he felt embarrassed and guilty. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to stare…” He mumbled a bit before she mentioned it was hot. He was fucking freezing and had no clue what she was on about. “Hey whatever floats your boat.” He said, hands raising up without protest, the bag swaying a little. “Although I’m cold so I have no clue how you’re not freezing in just that.”

“It’s fine,” said Lynne as he apologized for staring. She shook her head. “No, I’m cold, too,” she admitted. “I’m from Hawaii, so hot and hotter are the only kinds of weather I know. But, it seemed better to say that than to admit that I was locked out of my apartment. Course, in retrospect, it seems kind of like a stupid excuse now all things considered and now my cover’s blown anyway,” she said sheepishly. "And welp, that’s my story. Which I realize you didn’t ask for, to begin with.”

All he wanted was to unwind at home and maybe nap for a bit before going over some files he brought from work. It wasn’t till he came face-to-face with a woman in nothing but her underwear. “You’re locked out of your apartment aren’t you?” Ezra asked, keeping his gaze squarely on the female’s face. Not that the view in front of him wasn’t enticing, he just wasn’t interested plus she was already feeling uncomfortable enough. Sighing, Ezra shrugged off the coat he was wearing and held it to her. “Here,” he offered. “I’ll call the building manager to come with an extra key,” Ezra said, retrieving his phone. “What’s your name?” he asked, as he searched for the contact.

“Yeah, I guess the whole hot-in-the-middle-of-October thing didn’t really work out so well, huh?” she said as she gratefully took his coat with a smile to indicate her thanks and easily fit into the oversized garment. “Lynne,” she offered. “Lynne Yujin. I just moved in. Which you might have figured from the rookie mistake,” she said as she ran a hand through her hair. “Thanks, though. You know, for helping out.”

It was strange being back in Queens apartment. After the whirlwind of emotions she experienced when she had to go back to Boston, being back in what she considered her true home now was somewhat of a blessing - a breath of fresh air… Even if that meant unpacking again. It was also weird living alone and quite frankly, the silence (even with the aid of her puppy) was somewhat suffocating so she made it her business to get out of the apartment and return to unpacking a little later. She found herself looking around the familiar halls, the clubhouse, the billiards room… She didn’t even bother using the elevator since she wanted to stretch out her time out of her apartment as much as possible. Maybe it was because back home, there was always someone around. She was the middle child of four siblings and her parents being the social butterflies that they were, always had people over for company. After that, she lived with two guys who acted as her bug swatters but also if there was a break in, at least she felt safe… Living alone was so odd for Sienna and she was glad that she was at least on the first floor, just two doors down from her former roommates. Rounding a corner during her journey around the apartment building, the young woman shuffled to a stop in her step as she was greeted with a woman who didn’t at all seem ready to be going out. She let out a laugh and shrugged her shoulders, “You do you, man.” The girl said, “Though I don’t know what you mean about it being hot, my ass is freezing in my apartment, i’m already considering putting the heating on but that might be just because I just moved in - heating was off so the apartment is like a damn freezer right now.”

“Well, I thought it might sound better to say it felt hot than what actually happened-- which was lock myself out of my apartment while doing laundry, hence the lack of pants,” she said gesturing to herself. “But it does sound stupid considering it’s the middle of October in Fall in the mountains,” she added thoughtfully. “Especially when you consider I’m from some place warm and have never really done well with cold. I’ll have to think that one through next time,” she laughed.

Strolling along with a bit of a pout, Remy was trying to work this guy on Tinder but he was playing her cold. She just had to forget about it for now and come back to the messages with a clear mind. She went for some coffee, only to come back sipping her iced mocha through it’s straw. Only to pass someone who was dressed very skimpy, which wasn’t a bad view for her as her smile curled against the straw. “Really now? I think you look great in my opinion. Don’t stop what you’re doing.”

“Well, considering what I’m actually doing is trying to get keys back to mine so I don’t have to wander around without pants on, I don’t think I would stop,” she said with a small smile at the girl as she tugged at the hem of the shirt she wore to try and cover more of her legs. “Weird way to kick off your first week off in a new place.”

As Jamison walked the hallways of the building trying to remember what apartment her friend said she was in one again, she came across a resident standing outside of their apartment to which she assumed was locked. Shaking her head and letting out a little chuckle at the situation, it reminded her of when she was back home at her place she had in London and came to the same conclusion this resident was facing. “Hey, I don’t judge at all, so you don’t need to worry.” Jamison told the girl once she had been spotted. “Let me guess, you’re locked out of your place and today was just not a day to wear pants? You wouldn’t be the first this happened to, let me tell you.”

“Well, the first half is right,” said Lynne. “I was doing laundry and didn’t have anything to wear so kind of just figured this would be okay until my load finished and one thing let to another so, here I am with no pants and no keys to get back to my apartment either. Does this happen often to people here or are you just really good at this guessing game?”

“Oh! It’s a weekend long festival that happens around here and everyone gets pretty into it. There’s games, rides, a bunch of food and of course all the fun activities you can find that only happen in the fall.” Eisley said, proudly explaining to the other what the festival she loved to attend was. “Thank you and yeah, my bakery is going to be there all weekend with some treats for everyone.”

“Oh, sounds like I came just in time,” she said. “Sounds fun, anyway. I’ll have to make sure to check it out. And check out your booth, of course,” she added. “Must be good if you got invited, right? When is it, anyway?”

As much clothes as Lynne had, she realized she had nothing clean to wear. Her decision to move had been somewhat spontaneous which meant she had just thrown all her unwashed clothes into several bags. The one bag with clothes that had been cleaned, turns out a pen left in one of her pockets had exploded and every single garment she owned was either splattered in black ink or just flat out too dirty to wear. Thank god there was a laundry room in her apartment. Now that her clothes were washing, Lynne was dressed in the only pair of clean underwear she had left and the plaid, flannel shirt she had been wearing when she had moved in. Hearing a knock at the door, she went to open it, but to her surprise, there was no one there. Stepping out, she looked around to see if perhaps it was someone playing a prank on the new resident, or maybe it was someone for the roommate she had yet to meet. She was just looking around when the door slammed shut behind her. “Shit,” she said as she tried to open it, but somehow the door had locked and the handle wasn’t turning. Perfect. She hadn’t been here for even a week and she was already trapped outside of her apartment and in her underwear no less. Looking around again, she was debating what to do and decided, maybe she could make it down the stairs and find the landlord to unlock the door for her. But as luck would have it, on her journey to the lobby to find someone with keys, she found herself face-to-face with someone else. “This isn’t how I always dress,” she said preemptively. She wasn’t ashamed. “Just a little hot in the building, you know?”

“This week just became a whole lot better for me!” Eisley exclaimed, looking down at the mail she held in her hand that explained she was picked as one of the booths for the Fall Festival Denver would be having in the up coming weekend. “Yours truly just got a personal invite to join the Fall Fest next weekend, so now you better come and visit me to see what I’m all about. Who knows, I might just let you sneak away with some free cookies if you’re nice.”

“Uh, sorry, the Fall Fest?” she asked. Being that she’d only just moved in, Lynne was still getting used to Denver, more than that, she was too aware of all the ins and outs of the city just yet. “Sorry, I don’t even know if you were talking to me, but congratulations on that. I guess you’re all about baked goods if you’re bribe is cookies.”
