“I think we can arrange that. We both know you need it,” Katherine nod her head with a smirk on her lips as she teased him about him needing the brain scan. She had no idea who Ezra is now, what he’s into these days, what he was like after they went their separate way, and yet there’s something still so familiar about him, and it scared her. Katherine burst in laughter before she almost choking on her own laughter when Ezra told her that he’s a criminal defence lawyer now thinking he was joking, but apparently he wasn’t, “Wait, you’re serious?” she was genuinely shocked at this, she never thought, in her wildest dream, that Ezra, of all people, grew up and become a criminal defence lawyer. “I thought it was Ezekiel who wanted to be-…” she stopped herself as she remembered reading about the accident, quickly she changed her expression and turned her lips into another smile, “Ezra Carter, a lawyer. Now that is something I never thought I would say in my life,” she shook her head, but maybe there’s still a little bit of pride in there as well.
“Hey, I told you, you’re not the only one who changed, I guess we both did clean up our act huh?” she said referring to the changes in each of them. “Hey, do you want to go upstairs to my place? Get some coffee and catch up some more?” she offered Ezra, it doesn’t feel right to stand around the lobby like this.
“Woah, hey!” he rebuked when she started laughing at his profession. Ezra feigned a disgusted look when she mentioned Ezekiel’s name. His insides froze for a moment and Ezra coughed, as if it would clear the fog in his mind. Was his former dream of becoming a footballer too etched in everyone’s mind? Perhaps. He was determined to be a professional back in high school and even got a scholarship for it in Yale. Of course, people wouldn’t expect him to to a 180 and change all of his beliefs... well, not all. Just his career choices and where they have led him to. Ezra squared his shoulders up when Katherine repeated the words again with some pride in her tone. He grinned at her, the corners of his smile reaching up to his eyes. It was rare nowadays and it made him look rather boyish. “There you go! Today is the day of revelations!”
He was slightly surprised that Katherine wanted to invite him upstairs but Ezra obliged. “Coffee sounds good. Whiskey would be better,” he mused out loud, nodding at her offer. “Which floor is your place?” he asked, pressing the button for the elevator. “I’m at 304.”
