Grizfolk at House of Blues Houston 2.18.18
First show of the year and the third time to shoot these awesome guys. When I first started shooting concerts in 2015, I sent an email to their management asking to shoot them when they came to Houston. I had never shot a touring band before and never expected to get a reply..but I did - and was approved. These guys are amazingly talented and so much fun to watch and shoot.! I always get some good artsy photos of them - AND to top it all off..they are truly a nice group of fellows!

Luke Bryan at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion 10.20.16 Shot for The Houston Press

So my first country concert to shoot for The Houston Press was very exciting even before Luke Bryan made it to the stage. Photographers normally sit or lay around at the guard shack until we are escorted to the stage to shoot. If itâs someone you want to see, you leave your camera there and make your way to the lawn to watch. Sometimes itâs more exciting to be at the guard shack where the tour busses are. You see the bandâs entourage walking in and out of the gate, busses, security personnel - sometimes members of the band themselves.Â
This night there was a lot going on behind the scenes. Someone driving a tall van tried to get into the parking garage and after getting stuck, still tried to squeeze their way forward. They ended up having to let the air out of the tires and about 3 or 4 people had to get in the van to get it to drop lower in order to pull it out. Whatâs worse, the person driving the van apparently works for the pavillion! At one point 4 girls looking to be in their mid teens walked up to the guard shack, two of them wearing Live Nation badges saying they were on the VIP list. I overheard the lady checking the badges say âGirls, I was born at night but not LAST night!!â The two girls had badges with the same photo on them - not only was the photo of an older woman, but the woman was a completely different race! The best was when two other teen girls had to have their parents pick them up from the medic area because they were drunk. Both girls were being pushed out in wheelchairs; one with her face in a bag because she was sick. Poor girls missed Luke Bryan! The guards and photographers then talked about how we would handle the situation if it was our kids. Comments about a huge greasy breakfast of eggs and bacon early in the morning before making them go to school. OUCH!
This was my first concert at the pavilion where there was no dedicated photographerâs pit. This time it was actually the VIP pit where fans who spent a good amount of money for tickets were. It was pretty packed. The rule is always the same: FIRST 3 SONGS & NO FLASH. Except that night it was the 2nd & 3rd song, no flash. I had no problems with shooting openers, Dustin Lynch and Little Big Town. The latter I had to shoot from the soundboard and didnât have to fight the VIP crowd - perfect. When we started walking toward the pit and I saw how the crowd had multiplied I started getting a little nervous. Iâm about 5â˛5â˛â and unless I want to take pictures of the back of someoneâs head I either need to bring a small step ladder or I need to be right at the stage. The marketing coordinator for live nation was trying to escort me through the VIP crowd to the stage during Luke Bryanâs first song. I had my camera in the air so people would see I was not some fan pushing my way to the front. One lady gave the guy escorting me a nasty face, looked at me, turned her back to me and stood there - not moving. I tapped her on her shoulder, showed her my camera and pointed to the guy who was now next to the stage. I tried to tell her âIâm just taking pictures for 2 songsâ âI need to get up thereâ It was loud but I know she had to understand - I donât think she cared. All she cared about at that moment was Luke Bryan was shaking his butt her direction. I tried to push through but she pushed back. Live Nation guy saw the trouble I was having and pushed his way back to us. Showed her his badge and his walkie talkie - she shrugged her shoulders and still wouldnât let me through. Loud music, too many people - at this point my body was pretty much in fight or flight mode so I held my camera tight to my chest and started pushing as hard as I could to squeeze between her and the 20 other people between me and the stage. I didnât want to fight - I just wanted to get the hell away from these people!!! I make it to the stage. practically crawl my way between the security guard and the barrier. I hold the camera up to my eye, focus on Luke Bryanâs crotch since it was pretty much in my face and start snapping only to hear over the deafing roar of the crowd a voice saying âCHRISTI!!! NO!!!!â It was the Live Nation guy waving his arms and trying to get my attention to tell me it was still only the 1st song!!!
