Valentine’s Day is upon us, so there’s some shippy doodles! I tried to do cute but it is what it is.

Leliana is wearing this gown that I gave her a while ago. And IDK about anyone else, but I thought that Blackwall walking Sera down the aisle would be adorbs af

So...

I found a list of random plot starters to spark some creativeness, and this is what I came up with.

Timeline, after Haven and Crestwood, before heading to the Western Approach (the first time back at Skyhold)

“Josephine, I’m done.” Elli said quietly as another group of dignitaries left. She had met with what felt like an endless stream of nobles and ambassadors who were eager to meet the newly declared Inquisitor. Her face hurt from smiling, throat sore from talking, and she hadn’t had a chance to catch up with her thoughts since she returned from Crestwood this morning. Her eyelids were heavy with unbidden sleep.  

Josephine looked up from her notes, her brows slightly furrowed, “There are still people to meet, some that have been here for over two weeks waiting for-” a few more envoys from Nevarra came up to them, cutting her off. Elli took this as her chance, nodding her head at the gentlemen before making her way towards her quarters.

She walked up the wooden stairs quickly, being mindful of the debris that still littered the walkway from Skyhold’s years of abandonment. There was a chill in the part of the keep, and she was grateful when she reached the top of the stairs of her room. Someone had been in the room earlier that day and had kindled a fire. Elli added a few more logs and stroked the flames before sitting back and surveying the room. Her only other time in her room was just before she went to Crestwood to meet with Stroud, and much had changed.

Someone - she assumed Josephine - had furnished the room. A large four poster bed sat as a statement in the room. The bed looked quite inviting after the almost three weeks on the road. There was a desk in the corner of the room already stacked with papers that no doubt needed her attention. The glass in the windows had been replaced with a design reminiscent of something she’s seen the craftsmen create. Most of her things had been moved here as well - her lute was sitting on the chair of the desk. Her belongings from her trip were placed neatly by her bed.

Elli let herself slide onto her back, soaking in the heat from the fire and letting the events from the past month wash over her. The journey to Skyhold was by no means easy. Haven lay under rock and snow. The heat of the fire and the smell of the battle invaded her senses.

Regret of not being able to save everyone.

Save Haven.

Knowing the reason that the Red Templars and Corypheus attacked Haven was to get to her.

The long walk to find the Inquisition camp, being led by blind faith that Chancellor Roderick’s path was true.

The relief she felt when Cullen and Cassandra found her just before she lost consciousness.

Knowing that the cause of the breach was something made by her people.

Becoming Inquisitor. She had gone from being branded a heretic to ‘leading an army of the faithful’, as Varric liked to put it. Looking at all of those people who she led to Skyhold, who now expected her to continue leading them. Elli laughed quietly - the fact that a Dalish elf is leading an Andrastian organization was not lost on her.

Then almost as soon as she had gotten to Skyhold, she and her team were off to Crestwood to meet with Hawke and her Warden contact Stroud. Not to mention that the town was being attacked by undead...caused by a rift underneath a lake....that was created by the Mayor flooding the caves and the original town...and a dragon attacking the town.

Elli threw her hands hands over her eyes, trying to avoid trapping herself in her negative emotions. She thought back to before the Conclave, of training daggers and bows with Aiden, practicing spells and keeping the lore of her people with Keeper Deshanna. The feeling of the forest floor on her feet, and the bark of the trees on her hands as she wandered. The excitement of getting to go to human cities to trade. The warmth of the sun on her back as her clan crossed the plains. She missed it. And she wasn’t quite sure if she could ever go back after everything.

After a few moments reflecting she pushed herself to her feet and away from the fire. Her satchel was by the foot of her bed with the rest of her things, and she checked through it quickly to make sure no ink had spilled before heading for the door. She had a feeling that she wouldn’t find peace in her room for much longer, if Josephine wasn’t already looking for her after she disappeared. There was also a very real possibility that she would fall asleep where she lay, an awakening no one desired.

She hesitated when she got to the door to the Great Hall, listening to hear if she could still hear the bustle of a maddening amount of people before pushing open the door. It looked like Josephine had pushed them out to their quarters. She had a feeling that she was going to hear it later, but couldn’t find it in herself to care.

Elli headed up the door opposite the door to the council and climbed up the stairs. She walked swiftly across the balcony, ducking under the scaffolding and managing to squeeze through one of the doors to the area looking over the garden.

There was still quite a bit to be repaired in this part of the keep, rubble covered most of the pathway and Elli had to be mindful of where she stepped in order to not twist her ankle. She moved as quickly as she could manage to the other side of the walkway before sitting, making sure that she was out of view of anyone that might look up from the garden.

She took her journal and inks out of her bag and opened up to her most recent sketch and listened to the sounds drifting up from the garden. She could hear Mother Giselle conversing with some of the other Chantry sisters, as well as some of the Inquisition soldiers talking amongst themselves as the people of Skyhold started to wind down from the night. The setting sun cast the sky on fire. She continued to work on her sketch - her view from an aravel back home- as the sun sank below the horizon, casting a wisp to light her page as darkness fell. However, it wasn’t long after that the blurring sounds and softer light lulled her to sleep.

“Inquisitor, are you alright?”

Elli work with a start, her neck and back quite stiff from falling asleep on the hard stone. She looked up at Commander Cullen, her eyes still blurry from sleep. The lights had long sing faded and the sounds of the wind almost screamed into the night. She also realized that she was quite cold.

She started to put her belongings back in her bag before addressing the Commander, “Quite cold, but no worse for the wear. Did Josephine send out a search party?”

He snorted, “You could call it that. She was quite put off with your disappearance earlier,” he extended a hand to help Elli to her feet, which she gratefully accepted, “Apparently she was left with a swarm of Orlesian Noblemen who we a bit put off at not meeting the Inquisitor.” He let go of her hand quickly as she got to her feet, her hand feeling the cold all the more with the loss of its warmth. She contemplated casting a small warming spell, but the idea of using any sort of magic around the former Templar still made her a bit uneasy. She nodded her thanks and began to make her way back to the Great Hall with Cullen trailing behind her.

“So, how did you find me then?” She asked as they descended the stairs, their footsteps echoing in the stillness of the keep.

He ran a gloved hand through his hair - is this man ever not fully armored she thought- before her answered, “Lucky guess. I assumed that you would probably be somewhere that you wouldn’t be disturbed. Considering that the rooms overlooking the garden hadn’t been completed, it was as safe a bet as any….though I didn’t expect you to be on the balcony, of all things.”

“I like being outside, what can I say?” Their pace slowed as they approached the door to her quarters. “Thank you for waking me though, I rather like having all of my limbs.”

He gave a small smile before stopping at the door, “Inquisitor...how long has it been since you’ve slept?”

She looked at him, confused, “Why do you ask?”

“Because falling asleep with no protections set, even in a place like Skyhold, isn’t like you, Ellinor.”

She took a quick intake of breath at hearing him use her name. It felt like so long since anyone had addressed her as such. She also knew that Cullen was right.

She hesitated, torn, before answering “A while”

He exhaled sharply, then seemed to collect himself. “Before or after Haven?”

More questions “Before.”

He frowned slightly, appearing more troubled by the thought than Elli had expected, but before she could reply, Cullen was leaving. “I need to meet with Josephine before I retire for the night...but can you promise me something?”

Elli lifted her eyebrows, “I’ll hear it, I’m making no guarantees beyond that.”

He laughed quietly, “Just...talk to someone about what happened. No one else here has been through all that you have. You of all people-”

Elli interrupted him, “Thank you Cullen, I appreciate your concern.” She didn’t add what had crept up in the back of her mind, that she didn’t need pity, she needed strength. He looked at her, his expression still concerned before nodding and retreating to Josephine’s office. Elli opened the door up to her quarters and ascended the steps quickly. She had felt warmer when Cullen was standing close to her, in more ways than one. She pushed the thought away.

The fire in the hearth had long since died when she reached it. She put a few logs into the fire and lit it with a touch of a fire spell, casting the rest of the room in a warm glow. Too tired to consider drawing a bath, she stripped from her clothes and boots, shoving them in a pile by the dresser. She found a light shift with her small clothes and pulled it over her head quickly before throwing herself on the bed.

She closed her eyes and attempted to drift off, wanting to return to that deep sleep that she had managed to find earlier, but her mind would not rest. Her thoughts were racing a thousand miles a minute with no direction. It took almost an hour before she finally fell under, with one last thought floating through her mind.

How was he sleeping?

Well, this was fun. I haven’t written in a while (and never for Dragon Age) so why not?

Skyhold had long fallen silent, but still, Elli could not sleep.

Again.

Sighing, she pushed herself out of bed, crossing the room to grab her robe to guard against the cool night air. She cast a thought to lighting a candle before deciding against it and left the stillness of her room, her feet following a path that has become habit. Down the stone stairs, cold against her bare feet. Through the Great Hall, the fire in the hearth long since dead, tables clear. Soon enough, she found herself in front of the door of the Chantry. Elli pushed the door open slowly, cringing slightly when the creak of the door seemed to echo in the silence. 

The makeshift chapel was empty and dim, save for the candles glowing softly on the other end of the room. This had become a place of refuge for many after the events at Haven, a place where the faithful could come and find peace as the world seems to fall apart around them. 

She wished she could find that feeling, but the weight of what was lost to get here weighed heavily on her. Her keeper was not here for guidance, and the longer she was here, the less sure of herself she became. She shook her head, trying to clear the clouds of self doubt that always seemed to be floating in the back of her mind.

She knelt in front of the statue of Andraste and closed her eyes, not really sure what to say. For all of her time surrounded by humans, she still understood so little of them. She heard the Chant from the various sisters around Skyhold, but what did they do in their own silent contemplation? She took a deep breath and tried to clear her mind once again, pleading that this Maker could give the answer or peace that her own Gods did not.   

Alas, it was not to be. Disgusted with herself, she jumped quickly to her feet, intending to make her way back to her quarters and attempt to sleep. The last thing she was expecting to collide with someone at the door.

“Inquisitor, are you alright? It’s quite late.” He put out a hand to steady her.

Her eyes widened in surprise, now acutely aware of her less than normal state of dress, and of his hand on her arm, “I’m fine, Commander. I was just about to head back to my quarters actually.” She stepped out of the chantry, “Good night.”

“Inquisitor…Elli, just a moment.” Cullen called after her, the use of her name making her stop in surprise.”

“Is there a problem?” She asked. Cullen caught up to her quickly, leaning against on of the pillars near where Elli had stopped. He took a few steps to close the distance between them and shook his head.

“Would you mind if I walked you back?”

Of all the things that she could have expected him to ask, it wasn’t that, and she wasn’t quite sure how to respond at first. She finally nodded her assent and the two began walking back toward the Great Hall in silence.

They reached her door a few minutes later, the silence between them odd, but comfortable, but there was a look on Cullen’s face that she couldn’t quite identify as she turned to say goodbye. After a moment he nodded and turned around, heading toward the entrance, leaving Elli more confused than ever.

She watched him leave with a strange feeling settling into the pit of her stomach before opening her door and climbing the stairs to her room. She could think on it more in the morning. For now, she was hoping for sleep.

hey!! sorry to hijack this post, but there are a bunch of ways you can make videogames without knowing shit about computers!! 

for starters, there’s Twine, which is fucking great for making all kinds of interactive experiences (it’s what Crystal Warrior Ke$ha was made in so you KNOW it’s good) at all skill levels (i picked it up and made a game in two minutes a few nights ago)

if you want a bit more involved experience there’s Inform 7 which is a simple language for text-based adventure games that reads like slightly-weird English and also relatively easy to learn

you can do some pretty fucking cool stuff with Unity (my personal engine of choice) but you may need to dig a bit farther to get at the good stuff. there’s lots of really good presets though (i made an entire game just mixing and matching pre-existing templates and adding in my own art, won an award at a game jam for that one) and if you want help the community’s pretty dang friendly from what i’ve seen!

this is just a taste of what’s out there from what i’ve seen, but there’s so many cool resources out there. if anyone wants help getting started, i’m around to give you a leg up on making something in the coolest, most unexplored art medium around!

2D Editors:

GameMaker : Potential for pure drag-and-drop “programming”. It is recommended to read-up on the program’s functions to make good use of it. Good for prototyping. Uses its own language called Game Maker Language (GML) that is similar to a C language (e.g. C++ or C#). For both Mac and PC; free version available.

Construct2 : Drag and drop level editor that uses an “If-Then” event sheet structure for programming. Good for prototyping and for beginners. For PC; free version available.

GameSalad : Drag and drop with no code requirement. Good for programming. For both Mac and PC; free version available.

Solpeo : HTML5 based game engine for 2D and isometric game development. Some programming knowledge needed. Platforms supported: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer 9+. Free version available.

Stencyl : Drag and Drop “programming,” templates you can edit the variables/values for.

Scratch : Lego-block-style coding platform by MIT; totally free and a great intro to thinking in code. Very kid-friendly and comes with a community site. Browser version available.

3D Editors:

Unity : 3D editor that creates 3D games. Can build games for browser, as an app, or for mobile devices (iOS and Android). For both Mac and PC; free version available.

UDK (Unreal Development Kit) : Full-fledged, highly advanced editor. Features a complete set of tools that go from level design to visual scripting to cut-scene creation. Uses it’s own programming language called Unreal Script that can be arranged with Kismet, a visual code editor. For Mac and PC; free.

2D Art/Animation Software:

GIMP : Free photo editing and digital painting software.

Easy Paint Tool SAI : Free digital painting software with a UI similar to Photoshop.

Mischief : Free digital painting software with an endless canvas.

3D Art/Animation Software:

Sculptris : From the company that created Zbrush, this free software is ideal for beginning 3D sculptors.

Maya : Animation, VFX, lighting, and rendering software.

Magical Voxel : Voxel Art (3D Pixel Art). Very intuitive and quick to pick up.

SketchUp :  Architectural modeling software, great for creating 3D environments and buildings. Free version available.

Text-Based Games:

Twine : Create interactive text stories using Twine’s visual map system that links your game together. Easy to learn and use. End result is browser-based. For Mac and PC; free.

Quest : Interactive text stories that you can build in-browser.

Ren’Py : Create visual novels using a modified version of Python that reads like a combination of stage directions and a CYOA novel. For PC, Mac, and Linux; free.

Indie Game Music : This site offers free indie music with no need to worry about royalties or licenses.

Audacity : A free, open-source, cross-platform sound editor that allows you to record and arrange sound.

Eyes on You

My Dragon Age crack ship.  Garrett Hawke x Alissa Trevelyan.  These two nerds are one of my favorite ships despite not writing much about them.  Pretty sure @crazy-bone-lady got the brunt of my love for them.  XD  Thanks again for putting up with my random thoughts and vents regarding them!!  Expect canon divergence.  A lot of canon divergence.

Rogue, thieving bastard, and dog lord had been hurled at him throughout his year of service to the smuggler band. Garrett Hawke merely gritted his teeth and trudged through it. His family needed him and so he’d take any abuse flung his way to keep them fed. When the year was up, he was looking at a desperate situation. There was no money coming in to help feed his family and his sister needed protection from the Templars. Bethany tried not to show her worry but it was there. His mother worried most of all, despite his best efforts to keep it from her. Bartrand had been his last desperate hope. Then he met Varric Tethras. Through his connections, things didn’t look as bleak for the Hawke family. All he had to do was earn enough coin to get in with the expedition. Work was always around for anyone with a willing back, but most turned their noses up at Fereldens.

“I’m telling you Hawke. It’ll be worth your while to pay her a visit. Dimples always has extra work.” Varric shrugged as they walked into Hawke’s home in Lowtown. The woman he knew always had work for those willing, and it wasn’t grunt work. She was honest and dealt fairly. It was one of the reasons he enjoyed her company so much. That and she was like him. Couldn’t identify with what her family held so dear, and became a bit of a black sheep. Through sheer tenacity she’d brought the brewery from the brink of bankruptcy. He couldn’t believe she was running the brewery at the tender age of twenty-one. Made him so proud, even as she teased him about being in the old house.

A note:

I live in a state where you “have to” report anyone you suspect of being undocumented (that wonderful hellhole of Arizona). Now in practice this law has fallen far short, thank goodness. But if you live in such a place and they start enforcing it, here is how you get around it:

Assume everyone who doesn’t speak English is visiting.

Never ask about their job, because if they tell you they work here then you know they’re not visiting. You see them a lot for several weeks or months? Hm. Someone in the family must be ill. That’s terribly tough. They always dress in old, ratty laborers’ clothes? I feel you, my dude, I can’t afford new clothes either, and my dad has the fashion sense of an aardvark, so sometimes it’s not even about “affording” them. They say they’ve been here for years? You must have misunderstood. Spanish isn’t your first language, after all. First and last name? It never came up, or you don’t recall–you meet a lot of people.

And then, if you’re asked: no, you haven’t seen anyone residing illegally in the United States. Just people visiting.

I’m not American, and I have like, three followers, but this is important.

So, I’m a lawyer, who deals with immigration though does not specialize in it. But here’s the thing(s): 

1) Even someone who’s working could be here on a migrant (or other sort of) visa (hey, there are a few thousand per year, and *someone*’s got to get them, right?) or could be waiting for their case to resolve in immigration court, after having come to America to join a born or naturalized American family member. 

2) Even people who are working improperly could have come into the country legally – and just overstayed their visa or be violating the conditions of their visa, and you have no idea what the niggly little regulations that govern that might be. 

3) If a law enforcement officer asks you about a neighbor/friend/etc., take this moment to remind them that, unlike them, you cannot ask a random person off the street for their ID and be entitled to a response. 

4) Even if someone has told you that they are undocumented, you still don’t know, do you? Humans lie all the time. How could you know for sure? You can’t, because they can’t prove that they have a lack of papers. Just because you haven’t seen papers doesn’t mean they don’t exist! 

5) Don’t ever talk to cops in general. Why are you talking to a cop? Stop that, as soon as it is safe and feasible.
