Hand Grasping Hand, Underneath Stormy Seas

You've made it all brighter, even when I feel like I'm sunk deep beneath cursed waves

I was back there again.

I was guessing it was early on in the endeavor, my feet kept trudging forward along beaten steel that groaned with weathered voices. My eyes were tired, hands clenched into fists as I couldn't stop going on and on, ever onwards into a spiral of doors that neon signs felt foreign to my exhausted brain. There was something so off about this trip though, I would've at least been able to hear something out in the dark abyss that was beyond me, yet I couldn't hear a peep.

No tortured screaming that was heard from the very depths of hell, no clicking of mechanisms eager to unlock what horror would next await me, I didn't even hear the faint water rushing through flooded zones, blocked off with jammed doorways that sparked haphazardly. All I could ever really hear - and even then it was faint - was my own pitter patter of footsteps across the creaking floors. Well I could hear that too, but I mean anything else that was supposed to be down there with me wasn't.

I was alone.

Alone. By myself.

I didn't know what came over me, but I started to run.

Faster and faster, my breathing picked up with each step taken through corridors of nothing but empty drawers and pillaged folders. Something told me deep inside to take what I could, even if it was strewn about papers and inky colored vials, but I couldn't seem to focus on why. I knew it's off of habit, but why would I need to collect discarded trash that's already been looked through? Poured over by someone else's hands, appeared to be in quite a hurry too from all the chaos that was left in their wake.

Claw marks dotted door frames, where there wasn't pools of aqua left by faulty piping came splotchy bits of red. Maybe it was for the best? There could be anything down here that just chomped at the bit to kill me, I bang on through another door and screamed a bit when I heard the heavy noises my own paces made. It was all getting so very loud now, yet nothing seemed to be changed.

I had to keep running. Numbers ticked down, I would be losing breath soon yet I just couldn't fucking stop. Not now, not next door, there's got to be a destination in my madness otherwise I'd just keel over and fall down right there. Places that all seemed to beckon me of times where I would laugh instead of feel the pressing adrenaline deep in my stomach, I skidded only to a slower pace when my face collided with solid metal.

Door 49.

He was right here, I knew who I was begging for.

Bang! BANG! BANG!!

"O-" hiccup, damn thing, "Open the damn door!" He had to be hearing me right? I kept pounding my fist against solid steel in pure desperation, sliding lower and lower against it and never once looking back. I was scared to, I knew I'd probably regret even saying that, that I was for once scared of something deep down in this hellhole, but I'll come clean and say I always was.

I've always been terrified of this fucking place, it's chewed me more times than I can count but I took every imprint of it's teeth like it was soft. It wasn't, it never was, it still didn't feel it, he just made the whole endeavor worth something to me. The door finally unlocked to my raw hands, vent blown open to give me the blurry sight of my only real respite. My solace, my beautiful solace I couldn't stop myself from crawling back to both literally and figuratively.

The outline of one's blue-ish gray claw in the chill of the air around the vent, I took it on both knees with care. He didn't like this sort of thing, I'd apologize when I was less emotional about it all, nothing about the way our hands fit said anything other than relief.

"Sebastian- I- I think everything down here is dead. I can't hear anything down here." I didn't wanna open my eyes in case this wasn't real, and I was actually losing it, hell I didn't even know my eyes were closed if it wasn't for the steadily spilling tears that were gluing them shut (which I also didn't recognize of my own doing). "I- I thought you weren't here too..."

"I knew you wanted me gone, but I didn't think it'd be that bad. This place can't kill me that easily." Dear god he's there, he's alive with me. I knew that snark anywhere even if it was by tone alone, of course he'd be dry when I'm actively freaking out. That wasn't it though, was it? My hand was still very present in his palm, I was still on my knees and on the stained floor, he was right above me wasn't he?

"No.. No no no, it's just that everything is too quiet- too peaceful." A chuckle, he pulled me close to him out of pure necessity. "Good, means I can finally get some peace down here." Nothing short of sarcastic, his much larger left hand stroked my hair in calming waves, up and down. My hair, matted and tangled, felt tearfully soft against his hands, I felt good. He made me feel good. Again and again, I couldn't stop being in awe for what he could do just to ground me. Ways I thought was ethereal, the very guiding light to my hardened soul.

"Look at me."

I couldn't.

Right hand (now all three were on me) tilting my face, I could bury myself in him even if I wanted to. I had to face him head on, I hated the way he made me look at him, even if I wanted to or not. Opening my eyes and getting burned by the salt of my tears, what stared back at me was only radiance in its truest form, electric blue eyes that held my own clouded gaze, black hair that always fell in front of his face now matter how hard he tried to keep it back.

"C'mon, I'm not gonna leave you. This damn place isn't gonna get me on my back, and it won't for you either. You're strong, well, when you're not screaming your head off you are." I laughed, nestling my head in his palm and watching the slow upturn of his mouth. Nothing more of his own toothy smile, while it was rare it was always filled with adoration from myself, and the hints of joy from him.

Time stood still.

"I love you." I knew I always have.

"Mhmmm, don't go all sappy on me. Fineeeee, I love you too." I saw the man I was engaged to, over and over in those little words. My solace, I leaned into him to let the rest of the world leave us.

My eyes fluttered and cracked themselves open bleary and moist, weight felt beside me that was distinct as it was welcomed.

Always welcomed, the sun didn't even fully start to rise before I felt myself to, and that goes for the both of them. The streak of midnight blue muddled with the flared sunlight between drawn curtains, I had to be careful not to move to drastically otherwise he'd wake up and tell.me something dumb about how I need to seriously get some rest. Not like he wasn't a hypocrite about this either, but I'll let that slide as I shifted ever so slowly to see his face.

Eyes closed, his hands were wrapped around me and frighteningly secure, arms keeping me pressed against him while sleep overtook us both. Making sure I was safe, oh how my heart ached in ways that couldn't be described by any means other than love for how he wishes to protect in dreams shared. I must've been way worse at trying to keep steady than I realized, because the delicate flutter of his lashes was all bit barely seen in the low light.

"Sorry, I had a bad dream."

"Ehhh, it's fine. Couldn't really sleep much myself anyway." Liar, but I gave him a tired smile and kissed the corner of his lips, always careful to see if he was ok with the affection given. Humming only ever broken by a yawn, he kissed sloppily back before nestling his face into the side of my neck.

"You were in it."

"That bad huh? Now I can't blame you for waking up."

I would roll my eyes harder if I could, but sleep clutched me almost as much as he did, "Actually, you were the reason why it wasn't so bad at the end." That got him to be quiet now, the faintest tilt of his head to keep going now, the floor was ready for me and I just couldn't help but reveal more. "I was back down there, and I just didn't know where to go other than to see you... Pretty crazy right? Even after all this time I can't help but be by your side."

"The feeling's mutual."

A steady breath, the droop of heavy eyelids after what felt like hours awake, and the chaste kiss of him and I that spanned enough time to leave me grasping for more. Anything that had him there in it, I was sold even if it meant burning up from the very touch. We didn't really say anything else soon after that, sleep taking me way quicker now I had him in all his wonderful self besides me, but I was certain that I didn't have any other nightmares that night.

Protection by just being there, I love him deeper than any form I take can show.
