people viewing zack and ray’s relationship as romantic is very distressing for… y’know, Obvious Reasons, but it also completely misses the point of their story entirely imo. ray’s whole thing was that she wanted a “perfect family”, and she desired to be wanted in life and death [presumably by said family]. she wanted an adult figure in her life to give a shit about her for her. that’s why she couldn’t accept danny in that role, because he ultimately wanted to care for her for selfish reasons. he wanted her eyes, not rachel.
and zack’s story was learning to care for someone other than himself. that’s why gray made such a big deal when zack started to “wield his blade for someone else’s benefit”. he accepted ray for all that she is, and clearly grew to care for her throughout the story. like ray, he didn’t have an adult figure to care about him as a child. there was the blind old man, and that gave zack a taste of what familial love would be like. when the old man was killed, zack convinced himself that he could only find fulfillment in being alone. that he could only look after himself if he wanted to be “happy”, hence him viewing himself as a “monster” (i.e. unwanted and feared) and, when he first makes that promise with ray, only being interested in his own survival.
but then he meets ray, this child that looks to him for hope, and it’s crazy! she isn’t afraid of him, and she doesn’t view him as a monster! she views him as human! and that changes zack’s world!!! because now someone actually gives a shit about him!! there’s a reason zack remembered the blind old man when ray started looking for medicine for him on floor b2, she’s helping to save him like the old man did. it’s then that zack feels what familial love is like again.
i could go on and on but the bottom line is: zack and ray’s relationship was meant to be interpreted as familial since the start. it’s so obvious! and not just within the story itself too!!! the creator, makoto sanada, has made parallels between zack and danny, and how they each view ray (and… you know… mentioning danny as a parental figure for ray. peculiar, isn’t it?). even if sanada themselves didn’t state that zack and ray’s relationship isn’t romantic because there are “stronger bonds than romance” (which they literally did say btw), the context clues are still Right There. their whole relationship and story is about finding family in each other. how can anyone see all this and think they’re in love. like babes wake up you are missing the point

Ok guys we need more AOD fanmade Aus so here's one I thought of just 5 minutes ago: Comatose AU: RACHEL ALMOST DIED AND ALL OF IT WAS A DREAM
The whole main story is actually Rachel in a coma. When she wakes up she's in a hospital and has a Wizard of Oz Dorothy moment of "you were there, and you were there..." So like the main og story was her brain's interpretation of people she knew.
Of course Danny is her primary physician in this no duh. Lowkey doctors can be intimidating so I can totally understand a 13 y/o having nightmares about her doctor. Like imagine he complimented her eyes once to break the ice, she noticed he had a prosthetic eye and somehow just believed he stole eyes or something like that.
Reverend Gray HAS to be a chaplain. Her little brain just thinks he's far more intimidating than he actually is because of her already pre-existing negative experience with religion. Assumptions people :( maybe he was just a normal nice priest with a resting serious face that's all. What her actual religious experience comes from, no clue rn.
Ok but like... imagine if Zack was not at all in contact with Rachel. Like Rachel saw him for a brief moment before her coma and saw him all bandaged on a hospital bed. So her subconscious during the coma explores whoever that weird patient was and gives him op skills like strength and edgy weapons. Which might explain why Zack being kind of a protag is oddly mary sue in terms of creepypasta parallels, because RACHEL'S IMAGINATION DID THAT. Girl just wanted to know who he was, so she just made a headcanon backstory for some poor dude.
Cathy it would be really funny if she was a lawyer right before Rachel went comatose. Like the last thing Rachel thought about was expenses with Cathy, so that's why Cathy in the main series is super greedy, bloodthirsty, and basically every single evil stepmom stereotype there is.
Eddie... is probably like... I dunno. It was way easier with the others so I got two ideas: 1.) Eddie is a childhood friend of Rachel, and happens to be a big fan of halloween and 80s slasher films to look "mature" and Rachel internalized this as "oh yeah he's a sac wearing grave sculptor". 2.) Eddie had no prior contact with Rachel and briefly visited her in the hospital before her coma with the rest of their visiting class. Maybe she didn't see him really well past all the other students and somehow only saw a glimpse of his face, hence why he's masked in the og storyline. AND maybe the class brings flowers, flowers = dirt = graves, so her subconscious might've made that association.
Yeah Rachel dreamt she had evil parents but who hasn't had a nightmare or few about their guardians its SUPER common. So yeah I say her parents are a little MORE normal but still fight compared to the og story. Also I guess maybe she saw a bird right before her coma, and that is why there are a lot of birds in the og story, including the plot device bird with the key inside.
Anyway yeah thats my RACHEL ALMOST DIED au where everything was made up in her 13 year old mind.

I didn’t believe you guys when you said momdad Danny was real but I couldn’t have been more wrong… what’s interesting is that the way he acts around Rachel is hardly a façade. Yes, he has ulterior motives, but he does actually want to keep her around and take care of her even if it’s because of her eyes… This whole parental act isn’t far from the truth, especially when you consider that this is all based on Danny’s fixation on his mother’s eyes. I was reading episode zero and I only got up to finishing volume six, but from what I’ve read so far, I was really confused about Danny’s character. He seemed so cold and callous and mean and evil and he is all of these things but anytime he was “nice” it was literally just a lure. with Rachel, it’s consistent and based in truth. I mean, he really does feel that protective of her. it all made so much sense when I saw him first meet Rachel in episode zero. the way his behavior took a complete 180 made so much sense. I was finally able to solve the cognitive dissonance I had about him, and when I get my hands on volume seven, it’s over for y’all. the metas are gonna get longer and I’m gonna go insane.
Okay I did another manga panel recolor to illustrate my point about Danny’s freakassness and how it could’ve been written more effectively.
My main issue with Danny’s character has little to do with his design and nothing to do with his personality and motivations. It’s just his behavior that drives me up a wall. You really don’t have to change anything about Danny himself to communicate his main internal conflicts: his desperate need for unconditional love.
It’s frustrating because I know that others (including myself, when my friend introduced me to this) will misinterpret Danny to be a pedo when he’s explicitly not one, it’s just that his behavior communicates something that’s different to his actual character. You see this in the manga and the anime, especially—a lot of his expressions are weirdly horny even though he never actually communicates or suggests he really feels that way about Rachel. Notably, his need for her is familial. He sees himself in her, and his mother’s eyes in her. In another post, @wlwfav said in a reply to a post by @mothwithapencil that he wasn’t projecting his feelings about his mother on Rachel so much as he was projecting his desires for unconditional love onto Rachel to mother her, like a reverse projection (trying not to plagiarize here!). I fully agree. This is especially apparent when you see a flashback of Danny counseling Rachel in the game. He directly relates his shit onto her. The amount of countertransference (which is when therapists project their own feelings onto their clients) this man has is immeasurable. It’s part of why I’m so attached to him. (For reference, my favorite character of all time is also a therapist with an assload of countertransference.)
Anyways, I think you can make Danny just as unsettling if not more if you get him to stop acting as horny as he does. It causes some really uncomfortable mischaracterizations. There’s really no need for it. That’s why I edited the second panel a little bit. You can change a character’s behavior and keep their motives and desires the same. I wouldn’t change an extreme amount about his behaviors. I think his lack of physical boundaries actually works really well for his character. It makes sense given his isolated and rejected upbringing. I draw the line when he pins Rachel down in the anime. What was the reason. He just wants her eyes. Explicitly. Just her eyes.
Also, the tongue? Can anyone explain why it’s necessary??? It’s GROSS AND WEIRD! It also gives his character a weirdly sexual undertone that isn’t necessary to making him a terrifying guy. Like you can still get freaky with it without that damn thing. The excessive use of peepers…I mentioned this in my last post. It’s a good way to disarm clients/players from his obsession with eyes. If he treats his fascination as a joke (“I just really like your peepers haha!”) it makes him less suspicious. Contextually, it also makes sense. Danny canonically becomes a psychiatrist because he knows he’ll encounter people with lifeless eyes. Unsurprisingly, in the art of the game, they tend to be younger patients. To me, when we first meet him, he came off as a pediatrician. I mean, he calls himself Dr. Danny instead of Dr. Dickens, like a pediatrician would. His tongue shit and his peeper shit could sound like some silly thing he’d say to get clients to feel more at ease around him before he legit kills them and takes their eyes.
All of that is really unsettling to me. You could characterize his freakassness in ways that aren’t sexual but just as chilling. If Rachel’s needs for a perfect family and things that are “hers” can be conveyed in a horrific way without sexualizing her, the same could be done for Dr. Fuckface. He’s so similar to her, after all. He wants a family—Rachel, specifically—that mirrors what he wishes he would’ve had in his childhood, because he believes that comes with unconditional love. Even when Zack stabs him in the anime, his line is, “I’ve been so terribly lonely!” Because that’s his actual issue. He thinks Rachel, having had a similar childhood, is the only one who could understand, and he believes he’s fundamentally unloveable because of his trauma. He literally thinks his eyes killed his mom. He’s so fascinating!! I’m so obsessed with him. I can’t wait to start episode 0 of the manga.
So, yeah. In the second recolor I tried to convey his creepiness by giving him a more wistful expression that still strikes you as fucking weird. Instead of seeming excited sexually, he seems excited at the idea of a forced family. It’s more accurate to who he actually is. He literally does not want her like that in canon. I wish his behaviors reflected that more.
