debbie and frannyâs birthdays are supposed to be pretty close together, so in my mind, for frannyâs sixth birthday she gets to have the cool vampire party she wanted and for debbieâs twenty-first she gets to have the princess party she always wanted

i honestly just never questioned my love for her because she was always my favoriteđ. one of the things that really convinced me to watch shameless was the scene of debbie and fiona arguing over debbieâs hair/seeing that debbie was being hated on a lot in the comments of that video- i didnât understand the issue and i found her to be really funny, so i assumed it was one of those cases where people will just hate a teenage girl for being flawed (like every teenage girl)⊠and i was right. anyways, i started watching shameless and was always drawn to debbie and i never understood the hate at all, so i guess when i started season four and i had heard it was when she becomes âinsufferableâ i kinda prepared myself to hate her, but season four ended up becoming one of my favorite seasons for debbie lol and it didnât even cross my mind that i should hate her for anything in that season. i really think that more people would like and understand her if they paid closer attention to her character and storyline and tried not to take everything people say about a character online too seriously, because it really does allow you to form your own unbiased opinion on her- seeing the hate honestly makes her a more interesting character to look deep into, in my opinion.
everytime someoneâs mean to debbie in s11 i just think of s1 debbie as the girl theyâre saying shit about and i cry. please be nice to my girl shes like 2 months old (sheâs 20)

It always made me sad when people bring up Fiona becoming their guardian, and then later leaving. What would you have done in her place. Would you have left them? Left Debbie in an abusive foster home? Left Carl and Liam to be adopted and maybe visit them? Left Lip and Ian in that group home, and Ian by himself when Lip ages out? Would you do that, and then what? Walk out of that courtroom alone, leaving the kids behind? How would they feel as they watched you go? These kids who have been abandoned by their mom and left with Frank. So would you just get on with your own life? You only got a couple of minutes to make up your mind, what would you do in Fiona's place?
i donât really think you got the point of the edit if you think this is all about her getting guardianship. i get thats what she had to do, i get it was the only good option, but that doesnt excuse what she did afterwords. ian was illegally enlisted in the army, went awol, became a teenage prostitute and was in serious danger and she was all nonchalant about it saying âheâll be back when heâs backâ. liam overdosed at three because fiona wasnât watching him with drugs in the house, and youâd think that growing up with addict parents and being around your siblings when they were toddlers (who are known for putting everything in their mouths, toddlers are crazy) would teach her to not do that. youâd think she would take some responsibility, but instead she defends herself and says she isnât guilty when she clearly is. debbie got pregnant as a teenager and i know this is a sore spot (but this is the real point of the edit), but fiona shouldnât have made her homeless. idc. a tough love approach would be fine, but at the end of the day, itâs her body and her decision and she did give birth. as her guardian, fiona shouldâve still given her a place to live. she almost never held franny, she never raised franny, and i think establishing that boundary with debbie would be fine but there were better ways to do it than tackling her to the ground while debbie screams (6x02) and then eventually making her and her newborn homeless. when i bring up how fiona was warned its not because i think shes stupid or shouldnt have become guardian, itâs because i think what the judge was saying foreshadowed her future decisons. and in s7 when she tries to rebrand herself as an independent woman if it wasnt for the emergency contact list and billing her siblings. i donât care and i donât wanna hear an argument, debbie and carl were children and they shouldâve been treated as such. it doesnât matter if they were âacting as adultsâ, they werenât. she signed up to take care of them until they were 18. once the baby was out and debbie was trying to change herself and improve her life she didnât deserve that treatment, and pretty much nobody in the show was on fionaâs side. lip, ian, kev, and v shouldnât have been higher on the emergency contact list than fiona because this is fionaâs job. it doesnât matter if you think she deserved a life of her own because while i do think everybody deserves that, she still has responsibilities and that was child neglect. kev and v also have kids of their own and a business, the gallagher kids arenât their responsibility. i get your argument but i donât see the point in becoming guardian when the second she became guardian she started pretending she had no role in the kids life. what was the point if she was just gonna abandon them anyways? i get not wanting them to end up in foster care but i feel like thatâs better than on the streets. thatâs not even just about debbie because in s11 liam doesnât know who his guardian is and has to pick out spots on the street to sleep, and while he had his other siblings he shouldâve had fiona with him, his ACTUAL guardian. hate me for this take if you want to but iâll defend the kids over fiona until the day i die, sorry.
Oh I get all that, believe me. I also think we would think that way even if she had never become their guardian. Even if that whole thing never happened. It's not the legality of her situation that makes what she did wrong, it's the dynamic of their family. She basically had no choice when she became guardian, so for her, and for all of them it was "just a piece of paper." It really didn't mean a whole lot in their day to day life. It should have, of course, but in their world, it just didn't. My point is that when she became guardian she had to make that choice in the spur of the moment, she wasn't given time to think about what it really meant, she was only thinking about keeping her family together. That was her whole purpose. If she hadn't done it, if she had walked away and left them to the system, what would we all think of her? And of course she was a shitty guardian, how could she be anything but. Where did she learn how to be responsible? Who raised Fiona? As Debbie said, "Fiona takes care of everybody, but no one takes care of Fiona."
So yeah, I too have empathy for those kids, and can see how you would defend them. And I agree that Fiona made some really shitty decisions and was horrible when called out. But then Fiona did make those kids lives exponentially better than if she had not been there at all.
okay you really seem like you DONâT get it because all youâre talking about is the guardianship and not acknowledging any other part of the edit itself, which is weird considering you felt obligated to reblog with your own two cents. iâm talking about fiona mistreating debbie and acting as if she wasnât still supposed to be supporting debbie even if debbie made the terrible decisions she made. all youâre talking about is the same things everybody says, âoh well sheâs been raising these kids forever and if she didnât get guardianship then they wouldâve been put in a worse situationâ which is odd because i never said anything about that in my post. this is about debbie and fiona neglecting and mistreating her in s6/7. you talk a lot about how their lives are better in fionaâs care, and in the earlier seasons, they were, but when they were ACTUALLY in her care when she was guardian, i wouldnât say that. when fiona was guardian ian was being dragged out of a club at seventeen by pedophiles and debbie was begging on the street. whatâs the point in becoming guardian to save them from shitty situations if you wonât do shit to help them or put them in a shitty situation?

At one point in the clip fiona is talking to Carl and Debbie, debbie happily eating pancakes or whatever, and fiona says "you guys know how Jimmy's thinking about maybe going back to med school?"
Carl says "no"
Fiona says, "okay well if he does it would be in Michigan."
Debbie's face freezes and she drops the food and looks at fiona "he'd leave us?"
That made me think about ALL the people debbie had been left by.

It made me think of older debbie when she was real clingy with Kelly and I just wanted to give debbie a fucking hug.
đđđđđi think about that everytime i watch that scene. everybody was always leaving debbie, and in season three, she was left by SO many people. frank was gone for months, monica gave up her parental rights, jimmy-steve, and as you said, lip and ian. and when fiona started to stay over at mikeâs i think she pretty clearly started to detach herself because she was so afraid of being hurt, but a lot of the fandom likes to claim that was just âpoor writingâ and âdebbie becoming a bitchâ. it wasnât out of character, it was extremely in character. and youâre so real for talking about kelly, she had a close bond again, and she was so scared of it breaking and her leaving, so she clung to her. same with sandy, she tracks her and tries so desperately to keep prince and sandy both and have a family with her. every relationship debbieâs ever had, platonic or romantic, has ended in abandonment, and it hurts so bad. itâs literally no shock she ended up a âbitchâ, as people like to say.
