End of my internship
Thank you GNH and all who made my internship joyous and unforgettable.
Last two weeks of my internship
I have been continuously working on previous tasks such as creating charts and tables for the article that will be published soon.
I had to translate the website of MUN-SI project ,plus i have been creating content for CEIDSS’s Twitter. We presented the results of the intervention regarding snacks. Our graphs clearly showed how the consumption of fruit and vegetables have increased while the consumption of cookies dropped down.
In this post I am willing to sum up what I learned, how my previously established learning objectives became true and how I got accomplished on the subject of my internship.
In my first post I made known my learning objectives for the 10 weeks which were :
Expand knowledge on health promotion, in particular healthy eating and physical activity.
Be responsible for updating information in English on various social platforms.
Analyse data and results
Work with different databases , epidemiological statistics of obesity
After these 10 weeks I dare to state I found myself fulfilling these objectives moreover I gained knowledge on intercultural sensitivity as I have been in a foreign country. Sometimes my working language was not only English, I had to extend my skills and get the meaning of Portuguese words in order to complete a task.
I consider getting to know SPSS and being able to use as my biggest achievement and I am happy why I had an opportunity to contribute to an article by formulating tables that gives the base of it.
However now one of my eyes cries other one smiles as it is time to move back and study again and leave a super team within a great organisation behind. It has been my pleasure to be on board for these 2.5 months and learn about Portuguese people. I read them through statistics and tried to understand them through interactions on daily basis.
7-8th week of my internship
Rainy season arrived to Portugal and I have been unlucky enough to catch a flu in the first wave so I had limited working capacity during these weeks. However tasks have been given to carry out.
We have been working on our articles. One of them is about the Mediterranean diet and its advantages. It is based on a sample, collected from children ( 3-20 years old) who participated in our project that puts emphasis on Mediterranean diet.
Other one is about the AMEA teens project. It is a bit more complex as it takes into account several influencing factors, such as socioeconomic status how it does affect health status of adolescents. How level of physical activity contributes to the overall health status of the teens. Also it has developed tools to educate both children and parents. Therefore, to be able to write a good article we had to make research before writing the abstract.
Besides these, I have been responsible to create relevant content on CEIDSS’s twitter, add more contacts and keep social platforms up-to-date.
AMEA teens has got a new website, I have started translating the entire site’s raw Portuguese text to English that is also time-consuming. Briefly these activities kept me busy. Find out more at: http://ameaprogram.com/
Next weeks I will share more documents and pictures as it is going to be my last week.
5-6th week at CEIDSS
Today (16th October) has been the World Food Day, therefore, CEIDSS has organized an event in Algés municipality. Through various games and quizzes health professionals, nutritionists tried to involve children as well as parents in order to combat obesity, prevalence of noncommunicable diseases. We were dispensing these cards among people who were passing by in the shopping mall. Cards do simplify what a healthy meal should include.
This programme has been taken place in a shopping mall called Alegro Alfragide, playing area has been shared among CEIDSS, Portuguese Nutrition Association and a chef ( from Oeiras municipality) who was cooking healthy food patterns and offered small portions, titbits to people who have been present.
Portuguese Nutritionist Association conducted a survey to assess eating/dietary habits of people and clinical dietitians who represented the organisation enriched people acknowledgement in terms of food, nutrition, vitamins. To get an insight click for further info :http://www.apn.org.pt/
CEIDSS has been represented by three nutritionists both in the morning and afternoon.
At one table kids could practice their tinting and drawing skills definitely topic of the drawings were linked to diet, health, fruits, vegetables. At the other table we had the same board game I introduced before when I wrote about VENCE healthy snack however this time quiz questions were designed for food overall not just regarding snack. Winners got the an apple keyboard, reusable bag for shopping.
At our third table parents were tested, this was the saddest and most surprising table because parents were not able to answer simple questions so no wonder children need serious behavioral changes not just simple education on nutrition. Apparently it is hard when children have already developed and practice unhealthy beliefs due to their parents.

Other round of duties this week:
We finally uploaded the activities of MUN-SI to Open data base : http://openprogramdb.eu/
I have been put in charge of creating content for twitter of CEIDSS. Additionally I have been searching papers about benefits of Mediterranean Diet and AMEA teens program.
Do not forget the bigger picture! The real aim of World Food Day to end hunger but all small steps count on nutrition, distribution, consumption.

3-4th week of my internship at CEIDSS
These two weeks I got to work with the data set of CEIDSS. That includes approx.3800 data of students, primarily regarding their BMI/age (BAZ), nutritional status ( which category they fall under : Normal weight, overweight, obese, thinness), schools. It is a tremendous data set therefore I cannot share, either in smaller portion or the whole document. Also because of confidentiality it is not possible , though we are using codes for children.
Besides the data analysis I had to read previous articles on childhood obesity as the analysis of the data set will give the base of an article that will be written by Ana Rito so I could get a hint which directions we can move forward, what kind of charts and descriptive statistics we need. However this article will be very brief so the most important part of it will be the data analysis. In terms of data analysis during our education ( GNH) we have been taught to use Excel or we worked with that. Here I was introduced to the sofware called (IBM SPSS Statistics) for managing and calculating a wide range of statictics. Personally I recommend to use SPSS because it makes calculations way easier and it is more stable as for saving changes during the working process. Calculations I have completed were the same we learned during our education : frequencies, descriptive statistics, means, average.
Addtionally I have started writing the introduction of the article as i got the opportunity to contribute to it.
Article I have read through ( I am going to list only one as for those who are interested in this can find more on Pubmed or Researchgate to read but it was a great guideline for me):
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27136760
For these weeks I do not have pictures to share as statistics are dry and not many alternatives to create fun out of it however I can share a little sun with everybody.

Monday afternoon after hard work:
#Second week of my internship at CEIDSS, # Open Data Base
EPODE Open platform
This week we have been working to sum up results of last year as well as write short description of projects that have been carried out.
We will soon upload them on Open Database.
It is a website where organisations, health authorities can register their activities, ongoing programmes that got fund from the European Union in order to prevent childhood obesity. It is available for anyone who is interested in having a look at how European countries combat childhood obesity: http://openprogramdb.eu/
Just choose a country, click on search without setting up other filters and you will see all programmes!
CEIDSS has currently five programmes. We were working on MUN-SI and AMEA TEENS. 8 primary schools were enrolled in these projects (1750 children, 900 parents, 68 teachers).
In the context of MUN-SI we listed two activities that occured in the last year. It is called ’Healthy VENCE Snack’ , where VENCE as abbreviation stands for V-arious, E-economic, N-utritious, C-reative, E-qual. One of these activities was about to teach children what healthy snack is and how to prepare it with the aim of reducing overeat/ skipping meals later during the day. Teachers and parents have been involved that is important to build a supportive background when you want to see behavioral changes.
Participating classes were divided into groups during this activity. They all were challenged by a board game. Where yellow marked fields meant houses where they had to answer questions or for instance list 3 healthy snacks. (See figure 1).
At the end of this activity stickers as communication tools where used. Each child has got a sticker that shows three main groups of food (Protein, carbohydrate, minerals and vitamins). They will always remember to get a healthy snack they have to combine two or all these groups. (See figure 2).
Other activity within ’Healthy VENCE snack’ was a song, with a simple lyric that explaines why and how to make a good snack, lyrics is based on currently very popular song ( ‘Agir- Se tempo e dinheiro’ )that you can hear in Portugal wherever you go so children will not have possibility to forget this activity.
English
To be strong and healthy without illness
The VENCE Snacks I'll have to eat Cereals, proteins, minerals, vitamins
From these three groups I will choose
To always win! ( It was hard to translate from Portuguese, but this is just give an idea, what message lyric had)
Regarding AMEA TEENS programme, we had also two projects to register up on open data base. One is ’Mega Zuma class’ other is ’Healthy cooking workshop’. Mega zumba class was organized in all participating municipalities/counties to make children physically active on an entertaining way. Two inructors were responsible for holding the class and guarantee fun without competition or comparism.
Within this project there was a Facebook challenge announced on national level about what teenagers think healthy is. Click for further details :
https://www.facebook.com/ameateens/?fref=ts
Healthy cooking workshop was a lecture on nutrition. Where chefs of local restaurants and hotels came to schools and explained children the basics of hygiene, sanitation and food safety before, during and after the cooking process. Besides this, children could participate in cooking and prepare their own complete meal : appetizer/soup, main course, dessert. Dietitians of the organisation were all present to cooperate with chefs in order to make the healthiest food out of the available ingredients as well as remind students how to use salt, oil, sugar wisely as children often tend to overdose sugar.
Reflection on my own learning:
When it came to create description of activities and argue why and how they are related to health promotion/health I could use my previously gained knowledge that we were introduced to in module 2 and 4 namely, Nutrition, Physiology and Biochemistry and Educational Theory and Planning, Communication and Qualitative Methods.
#first week of my internship at CEIDSS
It has been pleasure to see the sun at the other part of Europe after long months in Denmark therefore, was a bit hard to get the working mindset when the environment and weather is so distractingly perfect. After all these challenges I had to go through :D I have been introduced to my supervisor, whom I will work together, Mariana Pinho Santos. She is a dietitian at CEIDSS. On the first week, we made my schedule for the entire duration of my internship, prioritized my tasks this points to the fact that we firstly paid attention to the regular newsletter of the organization before sending it through. In which we were writing about latest activity (April-June) of the CEIDSS:
AMEA TEENS project
As part of the AMEA teens project Healthy Cooking Workshops were organised in 5 municipalities where chefs of hotels and local restaurants were invited and involved to show children how to prepare healthy and nutritious food.
Lecture about Healthy food was held in Paredes municipality where Mediterranean diet was introduced to the students and teenagers from AMEA program attended this event too to share their challenged they faced during and after implementing the intervention.
Mega Zumba class was organized by AMEA teens in all municipalities (CEIDSS currently works with 5 cities of Portugal that includes several municipalities). However not only the AMEA project teens could participate but also all school students. Zumba classes aim to encourage teens to be physically active and also to be able to see positive aspect of sports without being competed.

EAT MEDITERRANEAN project
International Children’s day
The event took place in Central Garden of Santarém municipality where teachers and students all were present and could share but also learn more about vegetables and their importance in a healthy diet. Two guests were responsible to do a little play through they promoted soup consumption and explained health benefits of it.
Teachers’ Training
In May at Sá da Bandeira Secondary school students had the opportunity to perform what they learned about health and they could discuss their concerns an doubts with teachers or address their questions regarding Mediterranean diet. At the end they enjoyed the freshly made, nutritious snacks.
MUN-SÍ project
VENCE Snack- winner snack(Abbreviation stands for V-ariety, E-conomics, N-utritious, C-reative, E-quality). This play was carried out in 8 primary schools of Oeiras where after learning how to make healthy snacks, students were singing the VENCE song. Lyrics explains on a simple way how to do nutritious ,healthy snack. Find more : https://www.facebook.com/programamunsi/?fref=ts
As it is summer and new school year has started just now currently CEIDSS is at the stage of preparing for new year and collect data from the previous school year to analyse and write the conclusion. That is why I found relevant to explain and describe latest activities because it provides a common and stable ground for everyone who wanna follow my internship blog.
