I love where MitM is going with Dewey’s character. He’s like the only one who combats the constant ableism in the show. I just got to this scene where he’s inviting over his friend who’s in a special ed class, and his dad is happy to have a friend over until he finds out that the friend is mentally ill, and then says no. And Dewey actually stands up to him and calls out how fucked up it is. 

Hal (Dewey’s Dad): Oh jeez Dewey, I don’t think that’s a good idea. That kid is really…

Dewey: He’s fine. He’s just a little strange. Nothing to be scared of. 

Hal: Well it’s not anything to be taken lightly, either. That boy has a lot of serious issues. I don’t think you know what you’re getting into. 

Dewey: Yes, I do. I also know people treat him like a freak for no reason. Even his parents have given up on him! They’re just looking for an excuse to have him institutionalized. 

like the way mentally ill and intellectually or physically disabled kids have been treated since the start of the show has just been so awful and I’m so grateful that it was finally acknowledged in text that the way adults treat disabled kids is abusive
