About faith, mostly, as a separate construct to conviction. She is someone capable of real faith, true belief; believing in something however awesome and however truly doesn’t beget such a thing being benevolent however. Wherein Mavka wants to destroy the idea of the divine so humanity can be its own apex, I think Yulia sees the divine in a gnostic way, rather unwittingly for the most part. The divine is not separate from humanity, but a part of it, however distant. The soul lights that spark, and every soul is enshrined in a lie of flesh and sin. If she could separate her own Catholic preoccupation with original sin and being tainted, being a walking apology, I think she could find what she’d call salvation. She’s too proud, though, too caught in the idea of the Christian divine to realise that she lives in a hell of her own making, bogged down by the kinds of restrictions, rules, and standards she creates only for herself. After all, she’s a liar and an illusionist, apt at creating narratives to satisfy a purpose, and while she has no crisis of identity, she certainly has a crisis of faith festering within her.
