It’s also the name of a rock/metal band from Cairo, Egypt.

“Oh, it’s very good! I just adore your band, Maa Kheru, and I was wondering if you all could perform at my birthday party tomorrow!”

Malik nearly dropped the phone in shock. Pegasus not only knew of but 'adored' Maa Kheru?! Local Egyptian rock/metal band, Maa Kheru? Sure, their recent stuff was more upbeat and danceable, but earlier songs were full of screaming lyrics and metal riffs. Where did Pegasus of all people see the appeal?! Oh, adding some lyrics about eating the rich to upcoming songs was going to be imperative...

Still, Pegasus had money. And while Malik was relatively comfortable between his own remaining wealth from his totally legal and very ethical former business practices, the same could not be said for his bandmates- especially Ayesha, who'd just lost her job after punching her misogynistic boss. Again. (Different misogynistic boss though).

He shook his head, gathering his senses, before responding. "That's... quite the offer- and on a very tight schedule. I assume you'll be covering travel expenses, lodging, and food, in addition to paying us for the gig."

May as well milk the man for all he's worth!

Pegasus was already dialing a number on his landline, leaning back against his poolside chair.

“Fool. Did you forget he lost his God Card at my Battle City tournament?”

“Tut, tut, Kaiba-boy. I’m not inviting Marik, I’m inviting the whole family!”

“Rrg…”

“And for an amazing reason. Croquet? Would you play that Maa Kheru track I love so much?”

Croquet nodded and quickly slunk away.

“Oh, great. Looney tunes again.”

“Some of the best there is~! Maa Kheru’s songs are enchantments of punk and metal, with lovely little dashes of traditional Egyptian sounds.”

Pegasus heard the dial tone stop.

“Hellooo~? Anyone home? This is Maximillion Pegasus of Industrial Illusions, and I’m calling to make a very special offer today!”

Oh, Malik was aware of the man- not as the creator of Duel Monsters, but as the thief of it. Duel Monster wasn't invented by some random rich American after all. Duel Monsters was an aspect Malik's culture- and Pegasus was taking the credit and making billions on it.

"A special offer, huh?" Malik was suspicious to say the least. Pegasus could very well surprise him with a trip to prison for his counterfeiting past. "Afraid I'm pretty busy these days, so it better be good," he lied.

In longing, you feel fear. You're uncertain and wary of what your feelings may betray you to. You don't enjoy the feeling of not being in control of your own self, you ask, "why can't I just stop?" There's a cold feeling in your chest, your hands become clammy, you know you behold this desire too strongly, but the feeling goes nowhere. Rationally you think, "this desire is foolish and I don't need it," but that doesn't work for long. Secretly you yearn for that you seek, trying to hide it even from your own self, fearing that if you even let yourself know what you crave, nothing will be the same. Sometimes it's lonely. Sometimes you wish you could tell someone…. anything. You reference it vaguely in conversations, a joke that only makes sense to you, but is actually the longing veiled in fear. Your desire is forbidden, unattainable, by your own standards or someone else's, but it lurks in the back of your mind, persistent, deafening in the way that silence often is. I’m being harassed at one of my volunteer jobs. This harassment started in January ‘26. This work means a lot to me but I have increasingly pulled back. Unfortunately months of name calling and bullying is taking its toll- all on top of my being disabled. I’m not eating a lot. When I am, it’s delivery because I’m too in pain and exhausted to stand for cooking. I’m down to $30 until the 1st of June from buying delivery+takeout. Cleaning is hard. "I hear you, man. I feel the same way, I guess. About my own baggage."

Jounouchi glanced to the side, his smile twisting into a weary frown. It was always difficult to talk about his personal life outside of work and his immediate interests. Because much of his past was still painfully rooted in the present.

He wanted to overcome it. Escape it. Be more than what he was meant to be.

Although he might not be there yet, he's glad to see someone else was. It gave him hope that someone like himself could live a life free of constraints.

He offered a little smile.

"Luckily for you, I'm a big believer in second chances. Whatever happened between us, know that we're square, and that you got a friend in me." He rubbed his hand behind his neck before looking at Malik dead in the eyes. "If you'd want that."

Malik was free to say no, hell, even doubt him. But Jounouchi owed it to Malik to be honest and upfront about his intentions.

There were a couple of reasons why he felt he could trust Malik, casting aside the obvious bias of being a fan of Malik's music. Malik ultimately had done Atem a solid all those years ago by helping him cross into the afterlife. And before then, during Battle City, Malik had shown deep remorse for his raging horseshit and successfully fought off his darker half, vowing to be better than hatred had taught him.

It was admirable.

"A friend?"

The concept wasn't as foreign as it was just a few years ago. Yes, Malik was in a band, but Saira, Ahsan, and Ayesha were friends first, bandmates second. He was familiar with the bond of friendship these days. But he wasn't a friend like Yugi was a friend to Jounouchi. He couldn't imagine Yugi insulting a friend for fun like he did with Saira, or wheatpasting with Ayesha, or doing the downright nasty things he did with Ahsan. (And yes, that was still firmly a friendship. What was a handjob between friends?) In fact, Malik could imagine Yugi being pretty appalled, or at least confused, by the friendships he now had. And to Malik, there was no better friend to have than Yugi Mutou. The comparisons came naturally.

On the other hand, maybe it was for the best that his friendships were what worked for him, and not Yugi. The were very different people after all. But that also meant Malik's brand of friendship might not work for Jounouchi. The other man spoke about baggage and second chances. Malik had both, but it didn't feel the same as what Jounouchi had. Jounouchi hadn't tried to kill him, for starters.

Still, there was something so damn tempting about it- the rare glimpse at something he'd rarely gotten in his life, and most people never got: closure, or something like it. Wouldn't him and Jounouchi being friends be just so poetic after all they'd been through? It almost felt too perfect- a bow on a neatly wrapped present that was filled to the brim with terrible memories. For all he knew, once they started talking, all the pain would spill out. It'd be a disaster.

"You really want that from me? Me, of all people?"

It was Jounouchi's last chance to drop the subject. Despite his hesitation, the glimmer of hope in his eyes revealed that Malik wanted to be Jounouchi's friend more than anything.

"It's nice having people who care about you, eh? Not just people who feel obligated or whatever, but people who want to be around you."

Malik might have not exactly said that, but that's the message Jounouchi got from the other. Learning how to be around people who didn't speak in terms of power differentials, transactional relationships, and the-like. He wasn't exactly ignorant to that reality.

After all, his life was constantly steeped in that kind of bullshit.

He tried not to think about it much. He wasn't interested in living in a dog-eat-dog world despite how much it so badly wanted him to.

"It shows. Your music... it's really good. I can feel how much it makes you happy." It was sappy to say but he wasn't afraid as much these days to be a cornball. "I'm guessing your pals don't know about what happened with... you know."

If they knew, they'd be real troopers taking a risk on someone like Malik. They seemed like good people. They had to be— to get Malik to open up as he did through music. At least, that's what he thought.

Malik made a face, his shoulder's tensing at the mention of his past- and from someone who experienced some of the worst of it.

"No... of course they don't know. They'd never accept me if they knew."

Under the table his hands clenched, like they always did when he encountered an uncomfortable situation, when he felt his control of a situation slipping away. He knew they longed to encircle the Rod. He could still remember it's weight in his hand, still knew it's point of balance. It was pure muscle memory. He didn't really want the Rod- he wanted the control it gave him. So much of his life after giving the Rod to the Pharaoh was just coming to terms with how out of his control the world was. Or rather, how much control the world tried to have over him, over where he could go, over what he could be, over who he could love.

"Besides, it doesn't matter, does it? Who I was before. As long as I'm trying to do better. They just know me as a weirdo, a fellow outcast who doesn't fit in. I met Saira and Ahsan smoking hash in an alley after the grand opening of the new arts center. I met Ayesha picking her up from jail- I still don't know why she was in. Point is, that's where my life began with them. Everything before is my secret to share, or keep."

The argument was halfhearted, and he knew Jounouchi could tell. He wasn't lying per se. He was a firm believer in not revealing his past to people who didn't need to know. But his bandmates had grown so close, he wasn't sure if they'd graduated into a 'need to know' category. The ache in his chest whenever the subject of telling them came up seemed to indicate yes.
