I have to do my homework on this history. If anybody wants to add to it, I would be grateful.
One thing to note is that the judge who tries to sentence Champmathieu's character in the movie is White.
A second thing to note is that in Les Amis de l'abc's introduction, they clearly address and show the Indian political leaders and influential people as a source of inspiration and goal towards more a free, equitable world:
1. Bal Gangadhar Tilak
Helped lay the foundation for India's independence by help founding All India Home Rule League and defied the British Rule in the 1910s, up until his death in 1920.
2. Subhas Chandra Bose
Started an armed coup which inspired the Indian youth to join in to fight for Independence.
3. Abdul Ghaffar Khan
He was so non-violent in his protests, that it apparently baffled the British. He, ironic in the word choice, weaponsised non-violent protests to fight for the freedom and equality for Pakistan. His main fight for equality was for the Pashtun minority, who mainly reside in Pakistan and Afghanistan today.
4. I believe it is Lala Lajpat Rai
Dedicated himself to the Indian independence movement in the 1910s. He is also known as "Lion of Punjab".
5. Sarojini Naidu
First Indian woman to be president of the INC. She was an activist, feminist, and poet; and is famous for her literature. You can read her poems in the poem collections 'The sceptred flute' (1928), and 'Father of the Dawn' (1961).
6. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
One of the leading figures of the Movement, and gave a famous speech in Bombay (now is Mumbai) which changed the minds of countless nationalists who had previously been sceptical of the rebellious Movement. (Speech: Building a Strong India)
7. Jawaharlal Nehru
First prime minister of Independent India. During the movement, he played a big role in the negotiations towards India's Independence.
8. Mahatma Ghandi
Leader of the independent movement and advocated for a passive/non violent resistance. He led the Indian National Congress (INC).
