What do you do during a typical week of work?
Every morning starts with checking email and our ticket management solution for any outstanding issues at hand. I investigate any alerts derived from equipment. Also I check the schedule for server maintenance. I make rounds at the TV station and check in with each department to make sure everything they need for the day is working properly. I usually have an evaluation of a security or storage appliance on going as those are two areas of focus in a data centric facility such as ours. Throughout the day people drop by my office to ask for simple things from the password for wifi to a new mouse and keyboard. Occasionally, there are more complicated issues that require more advanced troubleshooting techniques.
What is the purpose or goal of Information Technology?
To support the end users of technology to maximize their utility. Said another way, the discipline of information technology is really that of a teacher, advisor, and perhaps even mentor. The tools that are available to a user are only as useful as the person using them knows how to. It is the job of the IT professional to stand in gap between desire and execution. Providing wisdom to empower the person in their goals. I.T. is really part of the humanities in that it is a service to people.
How does information technology make the world a better place?
When people are empowered they feel they have a chance to make a difference to overcome obstacles. I.T. is just the latest step in the evolution man’s use of tools to ease his condition. In my job in particular at a TV news station I support the community at large through ensuring they have access to our information. For example when severe weather happens we are able to warn the community to take proper precautions. If the systems in place to communicate that message weren’t maintained or taught to those using them, our messaging wouldn’t be very effective and the community would suffer.
What challenges do you face in Information Technology?
The tyranny of the urgent getting in the way of what’s important. As I.T. manager ensuring that projects are carried out in a timely fashion it is necessary to be able to strategize the cost to benefit scenario often in real-time. If we have a newscast due to air and the typical mechanism for delivering that content to air isn’t working, I have to decide what options are available and which has the greatest chance of success in a given time frame. Luckily these scenarios have happened enough in the past that a plan for their eventuality can be set for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th options already in line. Getting people to document process and log tickets is also probably the most forgotten part of I.T.
What challenges does Information Technology seek to overcome in making the world a better place?
The relentless pursuit of efficiency can sometimes take out the human element of empowering is really how I view information technology begin with. When a person becomes enslaved to the process of using a tool beyond their capacity to innovate, create, and produce then the tools used must be reevaluated. The wisdom to pivot or change approaches to a process or methodology of improving efficiency is central to the thesis of information technology. When that data and process out runs the capacity to deliver desirable results then the whole system must be reevaluated. Artificial intelligence can do everything to act as a personal assistant to driving a vehicle. I.T.’s capacity to understand these systems and educate people to us it to their advantage can be difficult. People tend to resist what they don’t know.
What does it mean to be a Christian IT Manager?
Providing excellent service to your fellow man is just a follow through with the great commandments. As an expression of diligence to care and be proactive and compassionate towards those lacking knowledge. To stand in the gap for their ignorance and folly is akin to the great commission. By getting people in the mindset that when the are lost for their next step that they have leadership, wisdom, and guidance available if only the look in the right place it sets them up with a skill-set that could be applied to their everyday life for when they need to rely on the Lord and seek Him out for His wisdom and guidance. For a tutorial on a particular device I would refer to the manual, for insight into life and purpose I would defer to the Word.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.
